    Effects of dietary supplementation of Chinese herb medicine mixture on rumen fermentation, nutrient digestion and blood profile in goats

    Twenty adult goats, fitted with ruminal cannulae, were used to investigate the effects of dietary supplementation of Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) mixtures on rumen fermentation, nutrient digestion and blood profiles. The wethers were assigned equally to one of the two dietary treatments according to a randomized controlled trial design. One dietary treatment was the basal diet, while the other was the CHM mixture diet consisting of the basal diet and the CHM mixture. Chinese Mosla, Atractylodes rhizome, Officinal Magnolia bark, white hyacinth bean and Liriope root tuber were mixed with a weight ratio of 8:4:4:4:5 to make up the CHM mixture. This mixture was added to the basal diet at 15 g/kg feed. The dietary supplementation of the mixture increased ruminal fluid concentrations of acetate, butyrate and total volatile fatty acids, and the ruminal activities of avicelase, carboxymethyl cellulase, cellobiase and xylanase. It also improved the ruminal effective degradability of dry matter, organic matter and amylase-treated ash-free neutral detergent fibre from the forage, apparent total tract digestibility of gross energy, dry matter, organic matter, crude protein, amylase-treated ash-free neutral detergent fibre, ash-free acid detergent fibre and calcium. Whole blood pH and concentrations of actual bicarbonate, buffer excess and magnesium ion, plasma concentrations of leptin, total protein, albumin, globulin, C-reactive protein, immunoglobulin A/G/M and complement 3/4 increased. Furthermore, plasma activities of nitric oxide synthase, glutathione peroxidase and total superoxide dismutase and plasma total antioxidative capacity increased. However, plasma concentrations of adrenocorticotropic hormone, aldosterone, cortisol, glucose, urea nitrogen and lactic acid and plasma activities of alanine transaminase, creatine kinase and lactate dehydrogenase decreased. These results indicated that the dietary supplementation of the CHM mixture exerted some positive regulating effects on the nervous system, the endocrine system and the immune system of goats, thus improving the functions of immunity and antioxidation, as well as the digestion and metabolism of nutrients.     Pseudomonas sp. strain WJ04 enhances current generation of Synechocystis sp. PCC6803 in photomicrobial fuel cells

    Photomicrobial fuel cells (pMFCs) are a new technology for transforming the light energy or bioenergy of algae into bioelectricity. However, the current methods of generating algal pMFCs have poor efficiency due to the complex electron transfer network in algal cells. In this study, pMFCs containing the model electricity-producing cyanobacterium Synechocystis sp. PCC6803 contaminated by additional bacteria exhibited a 12.6-fold greater voltage output compared to the control pMFCs with axenic Synechocystis sp. PCC6803. To explain this phenomenon, the compositions of symbiotic bacterial communities in bacterial-contaminated pMFCs were analyzed, and a pure strain WJ04 belonging to the genus Pseudomonas, which was the second most abundant (30.2%) among the total symbiotic bacteria, was obtained. The strain WJ04 was able to raise the voltage output by 8.3 fold compared with the control treatments, meaning that strain WJ04 contributed to the increased voltage output of pMFCs. Through the coculture experiment, strain WJ04 was found to influence the growth of Synechocystis, improve photosynthesis rates by regulating algal genes and further affect algal metabolite production compared with control treatments. In addition, nicotinamide, c-homocysteic acid and 4-aminobutyric acid (fold change analysis, F.C. &gt;= 10) could regulate algal gene expression and enhance the coculture current density by 6.1-12.3 fold compared with the control treatments. Thus, these results provide a clear explanation for the high current production in bacterial-contaminated pMFCs, clarify the interaction mechanisms between algae and bacteria in the anode and provide accurate evidence for the role of bacteria in improving algal bioelectricity utilization.</p

    An Integrated Road Construction and Resource Planning Approach to the Evacuation of Victims From Single Source to Multiple Destinations

    This paper presents our study on the emergency resource-planning problem, particularly on the development of a new approach to resource planning through contraflow techniques with consideration of the repair of damaged infrastructures. The contraflow technique is aimed at reversing traffic flows in one or more inbound lanes of a divided highway for the outbound direction. As opposed to the current literature, our approach has the following salient points: (1) simultaneous consideration of contraflow and repair of repair of roads; (2) classification of victims in terms of their problems and urgency in sending them to a safe place or place to be treated; and (3) consideration of multiple destinations for victims. A simulated experiment is also described by comparing our approach with some variations of our approach. The experimental results show that our approach can lead to a reduction in evacuation time by more than 50%, as opposed to the original resource operation on the damaged transportation network, and by about 20%, as opposed to the approach with resource replanning (only) on the damaged network. In addition, the multiobjective optimization algorithm to solve our model can be generalized to other network resource-planning problems under infrastructure damage

The problem is further complicated when more realistic situations such as evacuation priorities and the setup time for the contraflow operation are considered. Such a complex problem has yet to be discussed in the present literature. In this paper, we present a multipleobjective optimization model for this problem and a two-layer algorithm to solve this model.     Thermal evolution history after collision of North China plate with Yangtze plate

They were collected from gneiss and mylonite of North Jiangsu-Jiaonan-Dabie tectonic melange belt and Tancheng-Lujiang fault zone.     Analytical technology aided optimization and scale-up of impinging jet mixer for reactive crystallization process

    Reactive crystallization is widely used in the manufacture of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs). Since APIs often have low solubility, traditional stirred tank reactors and the route of process operation and control using metastable zone width are not effective. The current work investigated the integration of an impinging jet mixer and a stirred tank crystallizer that can take advantage of both the reaction and crystallization characteristics, the focus being on design optimization and scale-up using process analytical techniques based on the Fourier transform Infrared spectroscopy and Focused Beam Reflectance Measurement, as well as X-ray diffraction and particle imaging Morphologi G3. The parameters for process operation and design of the impinging jet mixer were optimized. The research was carried out with reference to the manufacture of an antibiotic, sodium cefuroxime, firstly in a 1L reactor, then a 10L reactor.     Two-dimensional elemental operator for modeling the vectorial hysteresis of soft magnetic composite material

This paper presents a two-dimensional elemental operator with biaxial anisotropy based on the physical mechanisms of the cubic textured magnetic materials, and deduces an analytical expression of the direct relationship between magnetic field strength H and magnetization M for a single elemental operator by the partial approximate substitutions. To verify the proposed model, the magnetic hysteresis of a soft magnetic composite material SOMALOYTM 500 under alternating excitations was simulated and compared with the experimental results obtained by a 3D magnetic property tester. The results suggest that the proposed approach can be a useful tool in the modeling of vectorial magnetic hysteresis and the calculation of iron loss in practical engineering electromagnetic field analysis

    In Arabidopsis hybrids and Hybrid Mimics, up-regulation of cell wall biogenesis is associated with the increased plant size

Hybrid breeding is of economic importance in agriculture for increasing yield, yet the basis of heterosis is not well understood. In Arabidopsis, crosses between different accessions produce hybrids with different levels of heterosis relative to parental phenotypes in biomass. In all hybrids, the advantage of the F1 hybrid in both phenotypic uniformity and yield gain is lost in the heterogeneous F2. F5/F6 Hybrid Mimics generated from a cross between C24 and Landsberg erecta (Ler) ecotypes demonstrated that the large plant phenotype of the F1 hybrids can be stabilized. Hybrid Mimic selection was applied to Wassilewskija (Ws)/Ler and Col/Ler hybrids. The two hybrids show different levels of heterosis. The Col/Ler hybrid generated F7 Hybrid Mimics with rosette diameter and fresh weight equivalent to the F1 hybrid at 30 DAS; F7 Ws/Ler Hybrid Mimics outperformed the F1 hybrid in both the rosette size and biomass. Transcriptome analysis revealed up-regulation of cell wall biosynthesis, and cell wall expansion genes could be a common pathway in increased size in the Arabidopsis hybrids and Hybrid Mimics. Intercross of two independent Hybrid Mimic lines can further increase the biomass gain. Our results encourage the use of Hybrid Mimics for breeding and for investigating the molecular basis of heterosis
