Crystal structure and electronic structure of quaternary semiconductors Cu2_2ZnTiSe4_4 and Cu2_2ZnTiS4_4 for solar cell absorber

We design two new I2-II-IV-VI4 quaternary semiconductors Cu2_2ZnTiSe4_4 and Cu2_2ZnTiS4_4, and systematically study the crystal and electronic structure by employing first-principles electronic structure calculations. Among the considered crystal structures, it is confirmed that the band gaps of Cu2_2ZnTiSe4_4 and Cu2_2ZnTiS4_4 originate from the full occupied Cu 3dd valence band and unoccupied Ti 3dd conducting band, and kesterite structure should be the ground state. Furthermore, our calculations indicate that Cu2_2ZnTiSe4_4 and Cu2_2ZnTiS4_4 have comparable band gaps with Cu2_2ZnTSe4_4 and Cu2_2ZnTS4_4, but almost twice larger absorption coefficient α(ω)\alpha(\omega). Thus, the materials are expected to be candidate materials for solar cell absorber.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

Domesticating the Foreign : Re-making Coffee in Taiwan

This article explores how coffee, as a foreign cultural import, is imagined, appreciated and localized in Taiwan. Until recently, coffee had been exotic to the Taiwanese consumers. The drink was brought to Taiwan by its former Japanese colonizer as a symbol of Western modernization. In the post-War Taiwan, coffee was considered a luxurious import and discouraged by the authority. It was Taiwan’s close political and economic relations with the US during and 1950s – 70s that attributed coffee’s common association with the ‘American dream’. Since the 1990s, chained coffee shops started to provide coffee at reasonable prices and turned coffee houses into popular meeting places in the cities. The changing meanings of coffee should be understood in the context of Taiwan’s political, economic and cultural transformation

Impact of dietary protein on lipid metabolism-related gene expression in porcine adipose tissue

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>High dietary protein can reduce fat deposition in animal subcutaneous adipose tissue, but little is known about the mechanism.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Sixty Wujin pigs of about 15 kg weight were fed either high protein (HP: 18%) or low protein (LP: 14%) diets, and slaughtered at body weights of 30, 60 or 100 kg. Bloods were collected to measure serum parameters. Subcutaneous adipose tissues were sampled for determination of adipocyte size, protein content, lipid metabolism-related gene expression, and enzyme activities.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>HP significantly reduced adipocyte size, fat meat percentage and backfat thickness, but significantly increased daily gain, lean meat percentage and loin eye area at 60 and 100 kg. Serum free fatty acid and triglyceride concentrations in the HP group were significantly higher than in the LP group. Serum glucose and insulin concentrations were not significantly affected by dietary protein at any body weight. HP significantly reduced gene expression of acetyl CoA carboxylase (ACC), fatty acid synthase (FAS) and sterol regulatory element binding protein 1c (SREBP-1c) at 60 kg and 100 kg; however, the mRNA level and enzyme activity of FAS were increased at 30 kg. HP promoted gene and protein expression and enzyme activities of lipoprotein lipase (LPL), carmitine palmtoyltransferase-1B (CPT-1B), peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor <it>γ </it>(PPAR<it>γ</it>) and adipocyte-fatty acid binding proteins (A-FABP) at 60 kg, but reduced their expression at 100 kg.</p> <p>Gene expression and enzyme activity of hormone sensitive lipase (HSL) was reduced markedly at 60 kg but increased at 100 kg by the high dietary protein. Levels of mRNA, enzyme activities and protein expression of ACC, FAS, SREBP-1c and PPAR<it>γ </it>in both LP and HP groups increased with increasing body weight. However, gene and protein expression levels/enzyme activities of LPL, CPT-1B, A-FABP and HSL in both groups were higher at 60 kg than at 30 and 100 kg.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Fat deposition in Wujin pigs fed high dietary protein for 25 weeks was reduced mainly by depression of lipogenic gene expression. The mechanism of lipid transport, lipolysis and oxidation in adipose tissue regulated by dietary protein appeared to be different at 60 kg and 100 kg body weights.</p

A High-Quality Mach-Zehnder Interferometer Fiber Sensor by Femtosecond Laser One-Step Processing

During new fiber sensor development experiments, an easy-to-fabricate simple sensing structure with a trench and partially ablated fiber core is fabricated by using an 800 nm 35 fs 1 kHz laser. It is demonstrated that the structure forms a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) with the interference between the laser light passing through the air in the trench cavity and that in the remained fiber core. The fringe visibilities are all more than 25 dB. The transmission spectra vary with the femtosecond (fs) laser ablation scanning cycle. The free spectral range (FSR) decreases as the trench length increases. The MZI structure is of very high fabrication and sensing repeatability. The sensing mechanism is theoretically discussed, which is in agreement with experiments. The test sensitivity for acetone vapor is about 104 nm/RIU, and the temperature sensitivity is 51.5 pm/°C at 200 ~ 875 °C with a step of 25 °C
