Demonstration of a quantum logic gate in a cryogenic surface-electrode ion trap
We demonstrate quantum control techniques for a single trapped ion in a
cryogenic, surface-electrode trap. A narrow optical transition of Sr+ along
with the ground and first excited motional states of the harmonic trapping
potential form a two-qubit system. The optical qubit transition is susceptible
to magnetic field fluctuations, which we stabilize with a simple and compact
method using superconducting rings. Decoherence of the motional qubit is
suppressed by the cryogenic environment. AC Stark shift correction is
accomplished by controlling the laser phase in the pulse sequencer, eliminating
the need for an additional laser. Quantum process tomography is implemented on
atomic and motional states using conditional pulse sequences. With these
techniques we demonstrate a Cirac-Zoller Controlled-NOT gate in a single ion
with a mean fidelity of 91(1)%.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures, 4 table
Kidney function in the very elderly with hypertension: data from the hypertension in the very elderly (HYVET) trial.
BACKGROUND: numerous reports have linked impaired kidney function to a higher risk of cardiovascular events and mortality. There are relatively few data relating to kidney function in the very elderly. METHODS: the Hypertension in the Very Elderly Trial (HYVET) was a randomised placebo-controlled trial of indapamide slow release 1.5mg ± perindopril 2-4 mg in those aged ≥80 years with sitting systolic blood pressures of ≥160 mmHg and diastolic pressures of <110 mmHg. Kidney function was a secondary outcome. RESULTS: HYVET recruited 3,845 participants. The mean baseline estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) was 61.7 ml/min/1.73 m(2). When categories of the eGFR were examined, there was a possible U-shaped relationship between eGFR, total mortality, cardiovascular mortality and events. The nadir of the U was the eGFR category ≥60 and <75 ml/min/1.73 m(2). Using this as a comparator, the U shape was clearest for cardiovascular mortality with the eGFR <45 ml/min/1.73 m(2) and ≥75 ml/min/1.73 m(2) showing hazard ratios of 1.88 (95% CI: 1.2-2.96) and 1.36 (0.94-1.98) by comparison. Proteinuria at baseline was also associated with an increased risk of later heart failure events and mortality. CONCLUSIONS: although these results should be interpreted with caution, it may be that in very elderly individuals with hypertension both low and high eGFR indicate increased risk

LANDSAT imagery and NASA high altitude color infrared (CIR) photography were used to select suitable sites for sanitary landfill in Volusia County, Florida and to develop techniques for preventing sand deposits in the Clearwater inlet. Activities described include the acquisition of imagery, its analysis by the IMAGE 100 system, conventional photointerpretation, evaluation of existing data sources (vegetation, soil, and ground water maps), site investigations for ground truth, and preparation of displays for reports

FABRIC: A National-Scale Programmable Experimental Network Infrastructure
FABRIC is a unique national research infrastructure to enable cutting-edge and exploratory research at-scale in networking, cybersecurity, distributed computing and storage systems, machine learning, and science applications. It is an everywhere-programmable nationwide instrument comprised of novel extensible network elements equipped with large amounts of compute and storage, interconnected by high speed, dedicated optical links. School principals’ emotionally draining situations and student discipline issues in the context of work intensification
Over the past decade, research into principals’ work intensification has revealed that principals spend significant work hours on student discipline and attendance issues, and that they report high levels of emotionally draining situations. In the current study, we examined the relationship between student discipline issues and principals’ emotionally draining situations to determine if variables related to student discipline issues affected principals’ experiences of emotionally draining situations. Using a correlational research design with hierarchical regression, we analysed data from a digital survey of school principals in Ontario, Canada. A total of 1434 surveys were included in the final analysis, with respondents from elementary, high-school and combined schools. Results showed a correlation between student discipline and attendance issues and principals’ experiences of emotionally draining situations, while also showing that student discipline and student and parent mental health were strong predictors of principals’ experiences of emotionally draining situations. These findings have important implications in supporting principals: These insights can inform principal preparation programmes by showing the need for increased training on identifying and treating emotionally draining situations. Insights may also encourage policymakers to review student discipline and student/parent mental health policies in light of the revelation of their impact on principals’ work

The popularity of auctions handled through eBay’s website demonstrates the marketing power of the Internet. This study examines the influences of price, quality, reputation, and country-of-origin effects on buyers’ repeat purchase decisions of jade products listed on eBay. Lower price, although promotes higher volume of bidding, tends to have negative impacts on quality perception. Repeat purchases and reputation differs significantly depending on the country of origin
Opportunity identification and evaluation in franchisee business start-ups
Purpose - This paper examines franchisees’ business start-ups from an entrepreneurial perspective, adopting a process representative of entrepreneurship to examine opportunity identification and evaluation by franchisees and to analyse factors that influence this process.
Design/methodology/approach - A qualitative study was employed and data collected using semi-structured interviews with a sample of service industry franchisees in Macau.
Findings - The study identifies that social networks play a key role in opportunity identification and that franchisees’ goals influence the criteria used and information search activities undertaken while evaluating franchise opportunities.
Research limitations/implications - The study makes two contributions to franchise literature. It identifies that social networks can serve as substitutes for lack of prior knowledge in franchise opportunity identification. It also identifies the interrelated nature of franchisees’ goals based on the activities and criteria used to evaluate franchise opportunities, and the importance of relational criteria when franchisees lack prior industry knowledge. It therefore also contributes to franchise/entrepreneurship literature by identifying the interrelated nature of the factors contributing to the dynamics of franchise chain growth.
Practical implications - Franchisors should explore how to better use franchisees’ social networks and identify the longer-term goals of prospective franchisees to support market penetration and franchise chain growth. Franchisees are advised to use independent information sources to evaluate franchise opportunities using goal-informed objectives and demand and relational criteria.
Originality/value - The study presents a more comprehensive understanding of franchisees’ decision-making process when joining franchise chains by identifying the activities undertaken and criteria used to identify and evaluate franchise opportunities
