Intimate Partner Violence in Immigrant/Refugee Populations
Intimate partner violence (IPV) is the most common type of violence affecting women. Globally, Central Africa and South Asia have some of the highest rates of IPV. In Vermont, the majority of refugees are from these regions. Individual, interpersonal, and especially cultural values play critical roles in the definition/appraisal and decision to seek help in these women. Sudden collapse of a colloidal gel
Metastable gels formed by weakly attractive colloidal particles display a
distinctive two-stage time-dependent settling behavior under their own weight.
Initially a space-spanning network is formed that for a characteristic time,
which we define as the lag time \taud, resists compaction. This solid-like
behavior persists only for a limited time. Gels whose age \tw is greater than
\taud yield and suddenly collapse. We use a combination of confocal
microscopy, rheology and time-lapse video imaging to investigate both the
process of sudden collapse and its microscopic origin in an refractive-index
matched emulsion-polymer system. We show that the height of the gel in the
early stages of collapse is well described by the surprisingly simple
expression, h(\ts) = \h0 - A \ts^{3/2}, with \h0 the initial height and
\ts = \tw-\taud the time counted from the instant where the gel first yields.
We propose that this unexpected result arises because the colloidal network
progressively builds up internal stress as a consequence of localized
rearrangement events which leads ultimately to collapse as thermal equilibrium

Effects of Art Intervention on Pediatric Anxiety and Pain in the Medical Setting
Introduction: Hospitalization and illness can be a painful and stressful time for a child. There may be anxiety over procedures and inpatient stays disrupt normal routines. Previous research found that for pre-school aged children, having parents around, having the help of the hospital staff, and playing an active role in alleviating their fears were the most helpful in reducing anxiety. Another study found that visual creative expressions can be meaningful experiences for young adult cancer survivors. Additionally, there is abundant literature on formal art therapy and its favorable effects on children in the hospital, however, there are fewer studies investigating less standardized “art intervention” in the same population. A stem-cell-derived platform enables complete Cryptosporidium development in vitro and genetic tractability
Despite being a frequent cause of severe diarrheal disease in infants and an opportunistic infection in immunocompromised patients, Cryptosporidium research has lagged due to a lack of facile experimental methods. Here, we describe a platform for complete life cycle development and long-term growth of C. parvum in vitro using air-liquid interface (ALI) cultures derived from intestinal epithelial stem cells. Transcriptomic profiling revealed that differentiating epithelial cells grown under ALI conditions undergo profound changes in metabolism and development that enable completion of the parasite life cycle in vitro. ALI cultures support parasite expansion \u3e 100-fold and generate viable oocysts that are transmissible in vitro and to mice, causing infection and animal death. Transgenic parasite lines created using CRISPR/Cas9 were used to complete a genetic cross in vitro, demonstrating Mendelian segregation of chromosomes during meiosis. ALI culture provides an accessible model that will enable innovative studies into Cryptosporidium biology and host interactions
Invasive Haemophilus influenzae Disease in Adults ≥65 Years, United States, 2011.
BackgroundSince the introduction of the Haemophilus influenzae serotype b vaccine, H influenzae epidemiology has shifted. In the United States, the largest burden of disease is now in adults aged ≥65 years. However, few data exist on risk factors for disease severity and outcome in this age group.MethodsA retrospective case-series review of invasive H influenzae infections in patients aged ≥65 years was conducted for hospitalized cases reported to Active Bacterial Core surveillance in 2011.ResultsThere were 299 hospitalized cases included in the analysis. The majority of cases were caused by nontypeable H influenzae, and the overall case fatality ratio (CFR) was 19.5%. Three or more underlying conditions were present in 63% of cases; 94% of cases had at least 1. Patients with chronic heart conditions (congestive heart failure, coronary artery disease, and/or atrial fibrillation) (odds ratio [OR], 3.27; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.65-6.46), patients from private residences (OR, 8.75; 95% CI, 2.13-35.95), and patients who were not resuscitate status (OR, 2.72; 95% CI, 1.31-5.66) were more likely to be admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU). Intensive care unit admission (OR, 3.75; 95% CI, 1.71-8.22) and do not resuscitate status (OR, 12.94; 95% CI, 4.84-34.55) were significantly associated with death.ConclusionsWithin this age group, burden of disease and CFR both increased significantly as age increased. Using ICU admission as a proxy for disease severity, our findings suggest several conditions increased risk of disease severity and patients with severe disease were more likely to die. Further research is needed to determine the most effective approach to prevent H influenzae disease and mortality in older adults

SITC 2018 workshop report: Immuno-Oncology Biomarkers: State of the Art.
Identification of biomarkers in cancer immunotherapy that predict therapeutic response and/or limit adverse events are a critical need in the field. To address recent progress and hurdles around cancer biomarker development and utilization, the Society for Immunotherapy of Cancer (SITC) convened a workshop, Immuno-Oncology Biomarkers: State of the Art, on May 16-17, 2018. Topics discussed included challenges in handling biospecimens, identification and validation of new biomarkers, data sharing, and collaborating across disciplines to advance biomarker development. Panel discussions followed session presentations to help foster participant conversation and discuss future projects and collaborations. The results of the Workshop include the development of new initiatives for the SITC Biomarkers Committee
Searching for the Kaluza-Klein Graviton in Bulk RS Models
The best-studied version of the RS1 model has all the Standard Model
particles confined to the TeV brane. However, recent variants have the Standard
Model fermions and gauge bosons located in the bulk five-dimensional spacetime.
We study the potential reach of the LHC in searching for the lightest KK
partner of the graviton in the most promising such models in which the
right-handed top is localized very near the TeV brane and the light fermions
are localized near the Planck brane. We consider both detection and the
