Disordered Fe vacancies and superconductivity in potassium-intercalated iron selenide (K2-xFe4+ySe5)
The parent compound of an unconventional superconductor must contain unusual
correlated electronic and magnetic properties of its own. In the high-Tc
potassium intercalated FeSe, there has been significant debate regarding what
the exact parent compound is. Our studies unambiguously show that the
Fe-vacancy ordered K2Fe4Se5 is the magnetic, Mott insulating parent compound of
the superconducting state. Non-superconducting K2Fe4Se5 becomes a
superconductor after high temperature annealing, and the overall picture
indicates that superconductivity in K2-xFe4+ySe5 originates from the Fe-vacancy
order to disorder transition. Thus, the long pending question whether magnetic
and superconducting state are competing or cooperating for cuprate
superconductors may also apply to the Fe-chalcogenide superconductors. It is
believed that the iron selenides and related compounds will provide essential
information to understand the origin of superconductivity in the iron-based
superconductors, and possibly to the superconducting cuprates
Tunable plasmonic graphene antenna array for communications at THz frequencies
The existence of plasmonic waves at a graphene/dielectric interface at THz frequencies enables the use of graphene as the radiative element of antennas working at this frequency range, but with a smaller lateral dimension compared to a standard metallic antenna. Due to the low carrier mobility in large-area graphene, result of its manufacturing process, the emitted radiation of graphene antennas is still smaller than its metallic counterpart. In this work, we show that the low emission of a graphene antenna can be compensated by antenna arrays. The proposed 1x4 graphene antenna array presents a far-field radiated gain of 9.3 dBi with a resonance frequency at 269 GHz. Integrated graphene patch antenna for communications at THz frequencies
Graphene is an attractive material for communications in the THz range due to its ability to support surface plasmon polaritons. This enables a graphene antenna to be smaller in size than its metallic counterpart. In addition, the possibility to control the graphene conductivity during operation by an applied bias leads to the tunability of the resonant frequency of graphene antennas. Graphene-based antennas integrated into transceivers working at THz frequencies may lead to faster and more efficient devices. In this work, we design and simulate a graphene patch antenna that can be integrated into transceivers by through-substrate vias. Graphene-based wireless agile interconnects for massive heterogeneous multi-chip processors
The main design principles in computer architecture have recently shifted from a monolithic scaling-driven approach to the development of heterogeneous architectures that tightly co-integrate multiple specialized processor and memory chiplets. In such data-hungry multi-chip architectures, current Networks-in-Package (NiPs) may not be enough to cater to their heterogeneous and fast-changing communication demands. This position article makes the case for wireless in-package networking as the enabler of efficient and versatile wired-wireless interconnect fabrics for massive heterogeneous processors. To that end, the use of graphene-based antennas and transceivers with unique frequency-beam reconfigurability in the terahertz band is proposed. The feasibility of such a wireless vision and the main research challenges toward its realization are analyzed from the technological, communications, and computer architecture perspectives.This publication is part of the Spanish I+D+i project TRAINER-A (ref. Postchemoradiotherapy Pathologic Stage Classified by the American Joint Committee on the Cancer Staging System Predicts Prognosis of Patients with Locally Advanced Esophageal Squamous Cell Carcinoma
IntroductionTo determine whether the postchemoradiotherapy (post-CRT) pathologic stage predicts the outcomes of patients with locally advanced esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) undergoing preoperative CRT followed by surgery.MethodsFrom three phase II trials of preoperative CRT for locally advanced ESCC, 140 patients were included. Preoperative CRT comprised twice weekly paclitaxel and cisplatin-based regimens and 40-Gy radiotherapy in 20 fractions. The post-CRT pathologic stage was classified according to the American Joint Committee on Cancer, 7th edition staging system. The prognostic effects of clinicopathologic factors were analyzed using Cox regression.ResultsWith a median follow-up of 61.9 months, the median progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) of the entire cohort were 24.5 and 30.9 months, respectively. The post-CRT pathologic stage was 0 in 34.5%, I in 12.9%, II in 29.3%, III in 13.6%, and ypT0N1-2 in 6.4% of the patients. The median PFS was 47.2, 25.9, 16.0, 9.4, and 15.1 months, and the median OS was 57.4, 34.1, 26.2, 14.1, and 17.6 months for patients with post-CRT pathologic stage 0, I, II, III, and ypT0N1-2, respectively. In multivariate analysis, performance status (p < 0.001), tumor location (p = 0.016), and extranodal extension (p = 0.024) were independent prognostic factors for PFS, whereas performance status (p < 0.001) and post-CRT pathologic stage (p = 0.027) were independent prognostic factors for OS.ConclusionsThe post-CRT pathologic stage classified by American Joint Committee on Cancer, 7th edition staging system predicted the survival of locally advanced ESCC patients who underwent preoperative paclitaxel and cisplatin-based CRT followed by esophagectomy
High myopia at high altitudes
Background: Optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD) increases significantly at high altitudes, and is associated with the presence and severity of acute mountain sickness (AMS). Exposure to hypobaria, hypoxia, and coldness when hiking also impacts intraocular pressure (IOP). To date, little is known about ocular physiological responses in trekkers with myopia at high altitudes. This study aimed to determine changes in the ONSD and IOP between participants with and without high myopia (HM) during hiking and to test whether these changes could predict symptoms of AMS.Methods: Nine participants with HM and 18 without HM participated in a 3-day trek of Xue Mountain. The ONSD, IOP, and questionnaires were examined before and during the trek of Xue Mountain.Results: The ONSD values increased significantly in both HM (p = 0.005) and non-HM trekkers (p = 0.018) at an altitude of 1,700Â m. In the HM group, IOP levels were greater than those in the non-HM group (p = 0.034) on the first day of trekking (altitude: 3,150Â m). No statistically significant difference was observed between the two groups for the values of ONSD. Fractional changes in ONSD at an altitude of 1,700Â m were related to the development of AMS (rpb = 0.448, p = 0.019) and the presence of headache symptoms (rpb = 0.542, p = 0.004). The area under the ROC curve for the diagnostic performance of ONSD fractional changes at an altitude of 1,700Â m was 0.859 for predicting the development of AMS and 0.803 for predicting the presence of headache symptoms.Conclusion: Analysis of changes in ONSD at moderate altitude could predict AMS symptoms before an ascent to high altitude. Myopia may impact physiological accommodation at high altitudes, and HM trekkers potentially demonstrate suboptimal regulation of aqueous humor in such environments
Pulmonary Tuberculosis and Delay in Anti-Tuberculous Treatment Are Important Risk Factors for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
OBJECTIVE: Tuberculosis (TB) remains the leading cause of death among infectious diseases worldwide. It has been suggested as an important risk factor of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which is also a major cause of morbidity and mortality. This study investigated the impact of pulmonary TB and anti-TB treatment on the risk of developing COPD. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cohort study used the National Health Insurance Database of Taiwan, particularly the Longitudinal Health Insurance Database 2005 to obtain 3,176 pulmonary TB cases and 15,880 control subjects matched in age, sex, and timing of entering the database. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Hazard ratios of potential risk factors of COPD, especially pulmonary TB and anti-TB treatment. RESULTS: The mean age of pulmonary TB cases was 51.9±19.2. The interval between the initial study date and commencement of anti-TB treatment (delay in anti-TB treatment) was 75.8±65.4 days. Independent risk factors for developing COPD were age, male, low income, and history of pulmonary TB (hazard ratio 2.054 [1.768-2.387]), while diabetes mellitus was protective. The impact of TB persisted for six years after TB diagnosis and was significant in women and subjects aged >70 years. Among TB patients, delay in anti-TB treatment had a dose-response relationship with the risk of developing COPD. CONCLUSIONS: Some cases of COPD may be preventable by controlling the TB epidemic, early TB diagnosis, and prompt initiation of appropriate anti-TB treatment. Follow-up care and early intervention for COPD may be necessary for treated TB patients
