    Design of a smart turning tool with application to in-process cutting force measurement in ultraprecision and micro cutting

    In modern micromachining, there is a need to measure and monitor certain machining process parameters in process so as to detect tool wear in real time, to optimize the process parameters setup, and to render the machining process some level of smartness and intelligence. This paper presents the innovative design of a smart turning tool using two pieces of piezoelectric films to measure cutting and feed force in real time. The tool was tested on its performance through the calibration and cutting trials against the commercial dynamometer. The results show the smart turning tool has achieved the performance as designed

    Multi-kink topological terms and charge-binding domain-wall condensation induced symmetry-protected topological states: Beyond Chern-Simons/BF theory

    Quantum-disordering a discrete-symmetry breaking state by condensing domain-walls can lead to a trivial symmetric insulator state. In this work, we show that if we bind a 1D representation of the symmetry (such as a charge) to the intersection point of several domain walls, condensing such modified domain-walls can lead to a non-trivial symmetry-protected topological (SPT) state. This result is obtained by showing that the modified domain-wall condensed state has a non-trivial SPT invariant -- the symmetry-twist dependent partition function. We propose two different kinds of field theories that can describe the above mentioned SPT states. The first one is a Ginzburg-Landau-type non-linear sigma model theory, but with an additional multi-kink domain-wall topological term. Such theory has an anomalous Uk(1)U^k(1) symmetry but an anomaly-free ZNkZ_N^k symmetry. The second one is a gauge theory, which is beyond Abelian Chern-Simons/BF gauge theories. We argue that the two field theories are equivalent at low energies.     Long-term X-ray emission from Swift J1644+57

    The X-ray emission from Swift J1644+57 is not steadily decreasing instead it shows multiple pulses with declining amplitudes. We model the pulses as reverse shocks from collisions between the late ejected shells and the externally shocked material, which is decelerated while sweeping the ambient medium. The peak of each pulse is taken as the maximum emission of each reverse shock. With a proper set of parameters, the envelope of peaks in the light curve as well as the spectrum can be modelled nicely.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA

    Design of an instrumented smart cutting tool and its implementation and application perspectives

    This paper presents an innovative design of a smart cutting tool, using two surface acoustic wave (SAW) strain sensors mounted onto the top and the side surface of the tool shank respectively, and its implementation and application perspectives. This surface acoustic wave-based smart cutting tool is capable of measuring the cutting force and the feed force in a real machining environment, after a calibration process under known cutting conditions. A hybrid dissimilar workpiece is then machined using the SAW-based smart cutting tool. The hybrid dissimilar material is made of two different materials, NiCu alloy (Monel) and steel, welded together to form a single bar; this can be used to simulate an abrupt change in material properties. The property transition zone is successfully detected by the tool; the sensor feedback can then be used to initiate a change in the machining parameters to compensate for the altered material properties.The UK Technology Strategy Board (TSB) for supporting this research (SEEM Project, contract No. BD266E

    Analysis and Detection of Information Types of Open Source Software Issue Discussions

    Most modern Issue Tracking Systems (ITSs) for open source software (OSS) projects allow users to add comments to issues. Over time, these comments accumulate into discussion threads embedded with rich information about the software project, which can potentially satisfy the diverse needs of OSS stakeholders. However, discovering and retrieving relevant information from the discussion threads is a challenging task, especially when the discussions are lengthy and the number of issues in ITSs are vast. In this paper, we address this challenge by identifying the information types presented in OSS issue discussions. Through qualitative content analysis of 15 complex issue threads across three projects hosted on GitHub, we uncovered 16 information types and created a labeled corpus containing 4656 sentences. Our investigation of supervised, automated classification techniques indicated that, when prior knowledge about the issue is available, Random Forest can effectively detect most sentence types using conversational features such as the sentence length and its position. When classifying sentences from new issues, Logistic Regression can yield satisfactory performance using textual features for certain information types, while falling short on others. Our work represents a nontrivial first step towards tools and techniques for identifying and obtaining the rich information recorded in the ITSs to support various software engineering activities and to satisfy the diverse needs of OSS stakeholders.Comment: 41st ACM/IEEE International Conference on Software Engineering (ICSE2019
