    Persona development: Analyzing varying characteristics of slow learner context in relation to reading abilities

    Designing personalized interface for reading purpose to fulfill the needs of children with reading disabilities, especially the slow learner, is not an easy task.requires in depth knowledge of the children and their ability to read as well. Realizing that the basis for user-centered design is the knowledge of users and task, this study take an initial step by developing slow learner persona.Better understanding of the slow learner persona and reading scenario enable the designer to develop suitable personalized solution that can cater slow learner reading difficulties. This paper presents the development of slow learner persona in accordance with the principles of human-centered design (HCD).Data collected through interviews and observation of slow learner reading activity are analyzed and transformed into slow learner persona to be used as a reference in developing personalized reading application for slow learner children with reading difficulties. In particular, the slow learner persona presents as context templates to derive information needs of users in relation to reading ability to be used as vital elements for developing personalized reading application

    Teaching slow learner children in reading is a challenging process. It requires personalization touch which can deliver suitable reading materials to meet diverse slow learner existing knowledge, needs and preferences. However, despite the various implementation of the personalization in a wide range of areas, the implementation of existing teaching and learning in primary schools in Malaysia does not support personalization. With an intention to cater to slow learner reading difficulties, this research offers a step-by-step process of designing personalization of reading content for slow learner children. In conclusion, developing personalized reading content for the slow learner children is one way of attaining the need for the slow learner children in reading. By offering personalization of reading for the slow learner children, perhaps it would be something interesting tool to be explored by a slow learner to break a code of reading successfully

    A Design Guideline For Non-Monetary Incentive Mechanics In Mobile Health Participatory Sensing System

    Participatory sensing emphasizes the participation of citizens and community groups in the process of sensing and documenting current events in their local environment using smart phones and mobile devices. Incentive is crucial in participatory sensing data collection to attract participants to join in a participatory campaign, and to engage participants to use the participatory sensing application. The challenge in studies on non-monetary incentives is how this type of incentives should be represented in a participatory sensing system because they are inherent to the participants. This study proposes a design guideline which consists of set of mechanics and features associated with each incentive construct based on Self-determination Theory and Motivation 3.0. The design guideline is presented in a hierarchical system structure to illustrate dynamic operation of incentive mechanics with different components in participatory sensing system. Content analysis is performed on 283 mobile health monitoring application in the market to determine the reliability of the proposed incentive mechanic and features through descriptive analysis and inter-coder reliability analysis. The findings of the descriptive analysis show that a relatively small proportion of the mobile application (15 percent), addressed at least one feature that tapped on each of the incentive mechanics, and almost all apps contain a minimum of one intrinsic incentive mechanic feature. The findings obtained from inter-coder reliability analysis found 56 percent of the proposed incentive mechanic features with low reliability. Furthermore, the finding shows insignificant reliability degree for almost all extrinsic features. This study provides both theoretical, and practical contributions. On the theoretical aspect, this study provides validation on the incentive mechanics and their features that have been proposed in the design guideline. On the practical aspect, the design guideline may aid system developers and service providers to implement the incentive concepts into systems’ features and further help campaign organizers and service providers to focus on the best incentives strategy for improving participants’ performance in the next participant recruitment

    A Framework for Graceful Interaction : Applying Laban Effort Theory to Define Graceful Movement Quality

    Direct manipulation which was introduced in the 1990s has enriched the technological and intellectual landscape of Human Computer Interaction (HCI) where interaction style progresses from linguistic to manual interaction via graphical objects. The engagement that results in the direct manipulation activity gives rise to a new philosophy of graceful interaction. However, ever since the concept was introduced, the HCI literature does not exhibit much related work on graceful interaction. In this paper, we present a design framework for graceful interaction through the use of Laban effort theory to formalize graceful interaction design. This framework presents a theoretical proposition and practical characteristics to describe the movement qualities of graceful interaction. The framework invites and challenges interaction designers for the exploration of graceful towards aesthetic interaction

    The design of aesthetic interaction: towards a graceful interaction framework

    The growth of techno-dependency and the proliferation of creative engagement have spurred research towards the creation of human values through digital engagement. Against the backdrop of technology evolution, research on human computer interaction (HCI) has begun to explore dimensions of human value derived from the aesthetics of interaction. This desire for beauty aligns to the Maslow's hierarchy of human needs which acknowledge that humans needs aesthetic satisfaction to realize self-actualization. However in the past, the main focus of aesthetics in HCI research was on visual beauty of the user interface. To further explore new forms and perspective of aesthetics of interaction, we present the notion of graceful interaction. In this paper, we present the theoretical understanding derived from the multidisciplinary areas of human basic movement, aesthetics and interaction design into a graceful interaction phenomenon of interactive interface as an attempt to build the foundations for the graceful interaction framework. We also argue that the aesthetics of human movement can be applied to the online environment and illustrates how the movement paradigm and can be aligned and mapped into user experience interaction design. Based on these theoretical understandings, several theoretical propositions are formed to describe the aesthetics dimensions of graceful interaction
