    As the twenty-first century unfolds with its emphasis on global concerns and typified by technology that is obsolete before it is out of its packaging, we need to reconsider what we understand by thinking and learning. Such reframing is essential if we are to adequately educate the twenty-first century learner. In the past, we neatly separated the cognitive realm of thinking and learning from the physical, social and emotional realities of the learner. However, substantial research has clearly established the interdependence and connectedness of each of these spheres within individuals. Spirituality, though, has barely been considered in these constructions of young people

    Measuring students\u27 perceptions of plagiarism: Modification and Rasch validation of a plagiarism attitude scale

    Plagiarism is a significant area of concern in higher education, given university students\u27 high self-reported rates of plagiarism. However, research remains inconsistent in prevalence estimates and suggested precursors of plagiarism. This may be a function of the unclear psychometric properties of the measurement tools adopted. To investigate this, we modified an existing plagiarism scale (to broaden its scope), established its psychometric properties using traditional (EFA, Cronbach\u27s alpha) and modern (Rasch analysis) survey evaluation approaches, and examined results of well-functioning items. Results indicated that traditional and modern psychometric approaches differed in their recommendations. Further, responses indicated that although most respondents acknowledged the seriousness of plagiarism, these attitudes were neither unanimous nor consistent across the range of issues assessed. This study thus provides rigorous psychometric testing of a plagiarism attitude scale and baseline data from which to begin a discussion of contextual, personal, and external factors that influence students\u27 plagiarism attitudes

    Insights into short‐ and long‐term crop‐foraging strategies in a chacma baboon (Papio ursinus) from GPS and accelerometer data

    Crop‐foraging by animals is a leading cause of human–wildlife “conflict” globally, affecting farmers and resulting in the death of many animals in retaliation, including primates. Despite significant research into crop‐foraging by primates, relatively little is understood about the behavior and movements of primates in and around crop fields, largely due to the limitations of traditional observational methods. Crop‐foraging by primates in large‐scale agriculture has also received little attention. We used GPS and accelerometer bio‐loggers, along with environmental data, to gain an understanding of the spatial and temporal patterns of activity for a female in a crop‐foraging baboon group in and around commercial farms in South Africa over one year. Crop fields were avoided for most of the year, suggesting that fields are perceived as a high‐risk habitat. When field visits did occur, this was generally when plant primary productivity was low, suggesting that crops were a “fallback food”. All recorded field visits were at or before 15:00. Activity was significantly higher in crop fields than in the landscape in general, evidence that crop‐foraging is an energetically costly strategy and that fields are perceived as a risky habitat. In contrast, activity was significantly lower within 100 m of the field edge than in the rest of the landscape, suggesting that baboons wait near the field edge to assess risks before crop‐foraging. Together, this understanding of the spatiotemporal dynamics of crop‐foraging can help to inform crop protection strategies and reduce conflict between humans and baboons in South Africa

    On-primate cameras reveal undocumented foraging behaviour and interspecies interactions in chacma baboons (Papio ursinus)

    Historically, direct observation by human observers has been the primary method for studying primate behaviour. However, human observation may alter the behaviour of even habituated primates and that of other animals in their environment (LaBarge et al., 2020). Observers may miss rare or subtle behaviours, particularly if maintaining recommended observation distances (Moll et al., 2007). Remote methods, including on-animal cameras, can overcome some of these limitations.Cameras have been deployed on a range of animals to study behaviour, although primarily on larger-bodied species. However, the use of cameras on primates has been limited (Fuentes et al., 2014). Yet on-animal cameras have the potential to reveal important aspects of primate behaviour from a “primate-eye perspective”, with cameras collecting data continuously, close-up, and at high resolution. The method thus has the potential to give exciting and novel insights into primate behaviour.We deployed custom-made, high-resolution, primate-borne video cameras on chacma baboons (Papio ursinus) in South Africa to gain insights into their behaviour and foraging in an agricultural landscape and to illustrate the potential advantages of this method, with a focus on undocumented foraging behaviours and interspecific interactions. Chacma baboons are omnivorous and occasionally prey on small antelope. Their flexible diets also may incorporate alternative anthropogenic food resources from agricultural areas (Walton et al., 2021). Although previously studied by using bio-loggers (Walton et al., 2021), these were without integrated video recording

    A multi-agent system framework for dialogue games in the group decision-making context

    Dialogue games have been applied to various contexts in computer science and artificial intelligence, particularly to define interactions between autonomous software agents. However, in order to implement dialogue games, the developers need to deal with other important details besides what is presented in the model’s definition. This is a complex work, mostly when it is expected that the agents’ interactions correctly represent a human group behavior. In this work, we present a multi-agent system framework specifically designed to facilitate the implementation of dialogue games under the context of group decision-making in which agents interact as the humans do in face-to-face meetings. The proposed framework, named MAS4GDM, encapsulates the JADE framework and provides a layer that allows developers to easily implement their dialogue models without being concerned with some complex implementation details, such as: the communication model, the agents’ life cycle, among others.     A Near-Term Concept for Trajectory Based Operations with Air/Ground Data Link Communication

    An operating concept and required system components for trajectory-based operations with air/ground data link for today's en route and transition airspace is proposed. Controllers are fully responsible for separation as they are today, and no new aircraft equipage is required. Trajectory automation computes integrated solutions to problems like metering, weather avoidance, traffic conflicts and the desire to find and fly more time/fuel efficient flight trajectories. A common ground-based system supports all levels of aircraft equipage and performance including those equipped and not equipped for data link. User interface functions for the radar controller's display make trajectory-based clearance advisories easy to visualize, modify if necessary, and implement. Laboratory simulations (without human operators) were conducted to test integrated operation of selected system components with uncertainty modeling. Results are based on 102 hours of Fort Worth Center traffic recordings involving over 37,000 individual flights. The presence of uncertainty had a marginal effect (5%) on minimum-delay conflict resolution performance, and windfavorable routes had no effect on detection and resolution metrics. Flight plan amendments and clearances were substantially reduced compared to today s operations. Top-of-descent prediction errors are the largest cause of failure indicating that better descent predictions are needed to reliably achieve fuel-efficient descent profiles in medium to heavy traffic. Improved conflict detections for climbing flights could enable substantially more continuous climbs to cruise altitude. Unlike today s Conflict Alert, tactical automation must alert when an altitude amendment is entered, but before the aircraft starts the maneuver. In every other failure case tactical automation prevented losses of separation. A real-time prototype trajectory trajectory-automation system is running now and could be made ready for operational testing at an en route Center in 1-2 years
