Low-temperature embrittlement of Ti-6Al-4V and Inconel-718 by high pressure hydrogen
Notched specimens of titanium alloy and Inconel-718 exhibit little reduction of notch strength at certain low temperatures under 2000 lb/sq in. hydrogen, unnotched specimens are not embrittled at these temperatures. The degree of Inconel-718 embrittlement is lower than earlier observations under 1000 lb/sq in. hydrogen
Supply Chains and Rural Development in the Asia Pacific Region
Rapid income growth and urbanization are having profound impacts on the food system, food producers and rural areas in the developing Asia Pacific economies. Meeting the challenge of rural development will depend on better integrating rural areas with fast-growing urban areas where the composition of food demand is changing and the logistics of supply are growing more complex. Possible government options include investment in transportation infrastructure—roads, railroads and waterway—and providing rural communities and small-scale producers the tools they need to better adapt to the rapid spread of modern supermarkets and their supply chains.Community/Rural/Urban Development,
Influence of gaseous hydrogen on metals
Tensile, fracture toughness, threshold stress intensity for sustained-load crack growth, and cyclic and sustained load crack growth rate measurements were performed on a number of alloys in high-pressure hydrogen and helium environments. The results of tensile tests performed in 34.5 MN/m2 (5000 psi) hydrogen indicated that Inconel 625 was considerable embrittled at ambient temperature but was not embrittled at 144 K (-200 F). The tensile properties of AISI 321 stainless steel were slightly reduced at ambient temperature and 144 K (-200 F). The tensile properties of Ti-5Al-2.5 Sn ELI were essentially unaffected by hydrogen at 144 K (-200 F). OFHC copper was not embrittled by hydrogen at ambient temperature or at 144 K (-200 F)
Binary Black Hole Mergers from Planet-like Migrations
If supermassive black holes (BHs) are generically present in galaxy centers,
and if galaxies are built up through hierarchical merging, BH binaries are at
least temporary features of most galactic bulges. Observations suggest,
however, that binary BHs are rare, pointing towards a binary lifetime far
shorter than the Hubble time. We show that, regardless of the detailed
mechanism, all stellar-dynamical processes are insufficient to reduce
significantly the orbital separation once orbital velocities in the binary
exceed the virial velocity of the system. We propose that a massive gas disk
surrounding a BH binary can effect its merger rapidly, in a scenario analogous
to the orbital decay of super-jovian planets due to a proto-planetary disk. As
in the case of planets, gas accretion onto the secondary (here a supermassive
BH) is integrally connected with its inward migration. Such accretion would
give rise to quasar activity. BH binary mergers could therefore be responsible

Nuclei embedded in an electron gas
The properties of nuclei embedded in an electron gas are studied within the
relativistic mean-field approach. These studies are relevant for nuclear
properties in astrophysical environments such as neutron-star crusts and
supernova explosions. The electron gas is treated as a constant background in
the Wigner-Seitz cell approximation. We investigate the stability of nuclei
with respect to alpha and beta decay. Furthermore, the influence of the
electronic background on spontaneous fission of heavy and superheavy nuclei is
analyzed. We find that the presence of the electrons leads to stabilizing
effects for both decay and spontaneous fission for high electron
densities. Furthermore, the screening effect shifts the proton dripline to more
proton-rich nuclei, and the stability line with respect to beta decay is
shifted to more neutron-rich nuclei. Implications for the creation and survival
of very heavy nuclear systems are discussed.Comment: 35 pages, latex+ep
Sets of Priors Reflecting Prior-Data Conflict and Agreement
In Bayesian statistics, the choice of prior distribution is often debatable,
especially if prior knowledge is limited or data are scarce. In imprecise
probability, sets of priors are used to accurately model and reflect prior
knowledge. This has the advantage that prior-data conflict sensitivity can be
modelled: Ranges of posterior inferences should be larger when prior and data
are in conflict. We propose a new method for generating prior sets which, in
addition to prior-data conflict sensitivity, allows to reflect strong
