Open and hidden charm production in heavy ion collisions at ultrarelativistic energies
We consider the production of the open charm and J/psi mesons in heavy ion collisions at BNL RHIC. We discuss several recently developed pictures for J/psi production and argue that a measurement at RHIC energies is crucial for disentangling these di erent descriptions
Chemical freezeout in relativistic A+A collisions: is it close to the QGP?
Preliminary experimental data for particle number ratios in the collisions of Au+Au at the BNL AGS (11A GeV/c) and Pb+Pb at the CERN SPS (160A GeV/c) are analyzed in a thermodynamically consistent hadron gas model with excluded volume. Large values of temperature, T = 140 185 MeV, and baryonic chemical potential, µb = 590 270 MeV, close to the boundary of the quark-gluon plasma phase are found from fitting the data. This seems to indicate that the energy density at the chemical freezeout is tremendous which would be indeed the case for the point-like hadrons. However, a self-consistent treatment of the van der Waals excluded volume reveals much smaller energy densities which are very far below a lowest limit estimate of the quark-gluon plasma energy density. The Discovery of a Molecular Complex in the Tidal Arms near NGC 3077
We present the discovery of a giant molecular complex (r=350 pc, M_ vir=10^7
M_sun) in the tidal arms south-east of NGC 3077, a member of the M 81 triplet.
The complex is clearly detected in the 12CO (J=1-0) transition at five
independent positions. The position relative to NGC 3077, the systemic velocity
(v_hel=14km/s) and the cloud averaged line width (15km/s) indicate that the
object is not related to Galactic cirrus but is extragalactic. The tidal HI arm
where the molecular complex is located has an total HI mass of M_HI=3x10^8
M_sun. This tidal material was presumably stripped off the outer parts of NGC
3077 during the closest encounter with M 81, about 3x10^8 years ago. After the
complex detected along a torn-out spiral arm of M 81 by Brouillet et al., it is
the second of its kind reported so far. Based on published optical
observations, we have no evidence for on--going star formation in the newly
detected molecular complex. Since the system has all the ingredients to form
stars in the future, we speculate that it might eventually resemble the young

A vertex-magic total labeling of a graph G(V,E) is a one-to-one map λ from E ∪ V onto the integers {1, 2, . . . , |E| + |V|} such that

In this paper we examine the existence of vertex-magic total labelings of trees and forests. The situation is quite different from the conjectured behavior of edge-magic total labelings of these graphs. We pay special attention to the case of so-called galaxies, forests in which every component tree is a star
Diversification Benefits of REIT Preferred and Common Stock: New Evidence from a Utility Based Framework
We study the diversification benefits of REIT preferred and common stock using a utility based framework in which investors segment based on risk aversion. Taking the view of a long run investor, we conduct our analysis using data from 1992 to 2012. We examine optimal mean-variance portfolios of investors with different levels of risk aversion given access to different classes of assets and establish two main results. First, REIT preferred and common stock provides significant diversification benefits to investors. REIT common stock helps low risk aversion investors attain portfolios with higher returns, while REIT preferred stock helps high risk aversion investors by providing a venue for risk reduction. Both asset classes receive material allocations over plausible levels of risk aversion. Second, while REIT preferred stock appears to behave somewhat like a hybrid debt/equity asset, its risk/return profile appears to not easily be replicated by those asset classes. When given the opportunity, investors will reduce allocations to REIT common stock and investment grade bonds and invest in REIT preferred stock
