    Finding a Place to Belong: The Role of Social Inclusion in the Lives of Homeless Men

    This study explores the role of informal social support networks of male homeless shelter residents. Authors utilized ethnographic methods, relationality and reflexive research approaches and key informant interviews with 10 shelter residents to investigate perceptions of belonging in overcoming social exclusion and countering the stigmatization cast onto as a result of their condition of homelessness. Study findings challenge our normative conceptions of homelessness by discerning between “rooflessness” and “rootlessness” suggesting that homelessness is more than the absence of shelter, but rather denotes the absence of support and inclusion in one’s community. This research highlights a community within the shelter characterized by notions of acceptance and companionship. The associations shelter residents developed are creative and collaborative survival strategies allowing residents to negotiate their conditions of homelessness. As a result, some residents expressed reluctance to leave the shelter and (re)integrate into the community that had cast them off

    Advocating for Increased Safe Injection Sites: Role of the Nursing Profession

    The nursing profession in Canada has a vital role in advocating for the increased implementation of safe injection sites (SIS) due to the nursing role in reducing the morbidity and mortality associated with opioid use. Harm reduction approaches like SIS, have proven to decrease drug overdoses, infectious diseases, and health-care burdens. Common arguments in opposition to the implementation of SIS including economic burden, community safety, and promotion of drug use are refuted in this paper. It is the nursing professional’s ethical responsibility to advocate for better health care for all members of society, including those who use drugs. We conclude that the role of nurses must include the provision of care for marginalised groups and advocacy for increased implementation of SIS in Canada

    Weathering the storm: Generating intersectional urban design understandings for winter cities

    Taking an intersectional approach, this research explicates the unique manner in which spatial injustice is experienced in a winter city when an individual possesses the multiple disadvantaged identities of disability, gender, age, and class. Employing case study methodology and go-along interview methods, this research answers the question: how can the lived experience of an older, formerly homeless woman with mobility and mental health disabilities inform intersectional design recommendations for winter cities? The findings identify three priority areas for intersectional design in winter cities to facilitate inclusion, wellness, and resilience among those disadvantaged by disability, gender, age, and class. These areas are: components of the built environment requiring intersectional understanding of accessibility (sidewalks, public transit-access routes, building entrances, and public transit pick-up zones); the urban context of senior and affordable housing; and public transportation. This paper contributes to the literature by demonstrating that intersectional understandings of urban winter environments are potent knowledge towards transforming cities from ones that disable and marginalize, to ones that enable and empower.En adoptant une approche intersectionnelle, cette recherche explique la manière unique dont l’oppression socio-spatiale est vécue dans une ville d’hiver lorsqu’un individu possède les multiples identités défavorisées du handicap, du sexe, de l’âge et de la classe. En utilisant une méthodologie d’étude de cas et des méthodes d’entrevues, cette recherche répond à la question: comment l’expérience vécue d’une femme âgée, anciennement sans-abri, à mobilité réduite et souffrant de troubles mentaux, peut-elle éclairer les recommandations de conception inclusive pour les villes d’hiver? Les résultats suggèrent trois domaines prioritaires pour une conception inclusive dans les villes d’hiver: les zones cibles de l’environnement bâti nécessitant une attention accrue sur l’accessibilité (trottoirs, voies d’accès aux transports en commun, entrées des bâtiments et zones de ramassage des transports en commun); l’emplacement urbain des logements pour personnes âgées et abordables; et les transports publics. Cet article contribue à la littérature en démontrant que la compréhension intersectionnelle des environnements hivernaux urbains est une connaissance puissante pour transformer les villes de celles qui désactivent et marginalisent, à celles qui permettent et autonomisent

    Visual Methods for Qualitative Research with Older Refugees: Reflection on Strengths and Drawbacks

    Although older refugees have similar characteristics and vulnerabilities as other populations that have benefited from visual research methods, there is scarce evidence of these methods being used for qualitative social work studies with older refugees. In this article, we discuss the application of visual methods for social work research with older refugees for a better understanding of their experiences and challenges, highlighting how it can be evocative, improve discussions by reaching senses that ordinary interviews cannot grasp, avoid re-traumatisation during research, and build resilience and coping in older refugees. We propose that visual methods could address power dynamics that privilege researchers over participants like older refugees, thus empowering and ensuring older refugees control research processes. This can be crystallised by using visual methods in participatory research. We also outline the drawbacks and concerns of using these methods for research with this population. We conclude by presenting a discourse on how visual methods can advance social work knowledge for practice and social change

    Ethical Issues in Conducting Community-Based Participatory Research: A Narrative Review of the Literature

    Community-based participatory research (CBPR) is a methodology increasingly used within the social sciences. CBPR is an umbrella term that encompasses a variety of research methodologies, including participatory research, participatory action research, feminist participatory research, action research, and collaborative inquiry. At its core, they share five key attributes: (i) community as a unit of identity; (ii) an approach for the vulnerable and marginalized; (iii) collaboration and equal partnership throughout the entire research process; (iv) an emergent, flexible, and iterative process; and (v) the research process is geared toward social action. While there is no shortage of literature that highlights the benefits and potential of CBPR, relatively little discussion exists on the ethical issues associated with the methodology. In particular, current gaps within the literature include ethical guidance in (i) balancing community values, needs, and identity with those of the individual; (ii) negotiating power dynamics and relationships; (iii) working with stigmatized populations; (iv) negotiating conflicting ethical requirements and expectations from Institutional Review Boards (IRBs); and (v) facilitating social action emerging from the findings. For CBPR’s commendable goals and potential to be realized, it is necessary to have a more fulsome discussion of the ethical issues encountered while implementing a CBPR study. Further, a lack of awareness and critical reflection on such ethical considerations may perpetuate the very same problems this methodology seeks to address, namely, inequality, oppression, and marginalization. The purpose of this article is to provide a narrative review of the literature that identifies ethical issues that may arise from conducting CBPR studies, and the recommendations by researchers to mitigate such challenges

    Enhancing Social Work Research Education Through Research Field Placements

    The increase focus on the role of research in the social service sector, pressure for practitioners to engage in research and the demand for integration of research and practice challenges faculties about ways in which to engage social work students in research. This paper evaluates a research based practicum program within a social work faculty at one Canadian university aimed at meeting this need. The objectives of the practicum include providing opportunities to integrate research theory/methods with practice; develop a broad range of research knowledge and skills; reduce negative stereotypes; instill passion and excitement for research; and connect students with agencies to engage in community based research. The mixed methods evaluation of the practicum included semi-structured qualitative interviews with former and current directors (n=2); an online survey with past practicum students (n=15); and a pre- and post-test attitude/skills assessment, a self reflection journal exercise, and a focus group with students currently in practicum (n=7). Findings suggest benefits of the research practicum across stakeholders as well as several challenges and opportunities for program enhancement. Research practicum is an innovative way of engaging students in applied research which can augments research capacity, mitigate negative stereotypes about research, and better prepare future social work practitioners

    Unraveling Ethics: Reflections from a Community-based Participatory Research Project with Youth

    There is limited literature describing the ethical dilemmas that arise when conducting community-based participatory research. The following provides a case example of ethical dilemmas that developed during a multi-method community-based participatory action research project with youth in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Several ethical dilemmas emerged during the course of the study related to the community in which the research was being undertaken, the recruitment of participants, and the overall research process. As important are possible harm s that may arise when the researcher is no longer involved. These ethical dilemmas and potential solutions are discussed in relation to social work research and community-based practice to raise awareness about the essential role of community in informing ethical research practice

    Characteristics of Home: Perspectives of Women Who Are Homeless

    We employed participatory, community-based research methods to explore the perceptions of home among women who are homeless. Twenty women engaged in one or more techniques including qualitative interviews, digital story telling, creative writing, photovoice, and design charrette to characterize their perceptions of home. Analysis of the data revealed themes related to the physical, affective, and external environment. By understanding how participants perceive home and the qualities they deem necessary for home, we can begin to construct home from both a service and design perspective that meets womens needs for stable, safe housing and home, and also gain a better understanding of what is needed to assist women in exiting homelessness and building more sustainable futures for themselves and their families

    Making Meaning Together: An Exploratory Study of Therapeutic Conversation Between Helping Professionals and Homeless Shelter Residents

    This exploratory study examined the nature of therapeutic conversation between helping professionals and homeless persons as an intervention to optimize health. Meaningful conversation occurred in relationships where there was a sense of connection and the presence of rapport. Emergent facilitators of therapeutic conversation included respectful engagement, casual nature of conversation, alternative settings for therapeutic conversation, effective listening, and establishing trust. Barriers included prejudging homeless persons, fear of punishment and authority, and academic and professional intimidation. Central to the study findings was the acknowledgement of the client’s personhood. Acknowledgement of personhood is a critical element in engagement between homeless persons and helping professionals
