Interaction of crippling and torsional-flexural instabilities for centrally loaded columns

Empirical technique predicts failure loads for centrally loaded columns with thin-walled, open cross sections. Interaction of two failure modes is predicted by modification of the Johnson-Euler equation

    |0>|1>+|1>|0>

I give a simple argument that demonstrates that the state |0>|1>+|1>|0>, with |0> denoting a state with 0 particles and |1> a 1-particle state, is entangled in spite of recent claims to the contrary. I also discuss new viewpoints on the old controversy about whether the above state can be said to display single-particle or single-photon nonlocality.Comment: A more serious version, almost 2.36 pages, but still an unnormalized titl

Readout scheme of the fullerene-based quantum computer by a single electron transistor

The readout of the quantum spin state is a challenge for any spin-based quantum computing implementation. We propose a scheme, based on the achieved technique of single electron transistor (SET), to implement the readout of electronic spin state inside a doped C60C_{60} fullerene by means of the magnetic dipole-dipole coupling and spin filters. In the presence of an external magnetic field, we show how to perform the spin state detection by transforming the information contained in the spin state into the tunneling current. The robustness of our scheme against sources of error is discussed.Comment: RevTex, 1 table and two figures. Latest versio

Strong photon non-linearities and photonic Mott insulators

We show, that photon non-linearities in electromagnetically induced transparency can be at least one order of magnitude larger than predicted in all previous approaches. As an application we demonstrate that, in this regime they give rise to very strong photon - photon interactions which are strong enough to make an experimental realization of a photonic Mott insulator state feasible in arrays of coupled ultra high-Q micro-cavities.Comment: minor changes, to appear in Phys. Absolute frequency measurements of the D2D_2 line and fine-structure interval in 39^{39}K

We report a value for the D2D_2-line frequency of 39^{39}K with 0.25 ppb uncertainty. The frequency is measured using an evacuated ring-cavity resonator whose length is calibrated against a reference laser. The D2D_2 line presents a problem in identifying the line center because the closely-spaced energy levels of the excited state are not resolved. We use computer modelling of the measured spectrum to extract the line center and obtain a value of 391 015 578.040(75) MHz. In conjunction with our previous measurement of the D1D_1 line, we determine the fine-structure interval in the 4P4P state to be 1 729 997.132(90) MHz. The results represent significant improvement over previous values.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

Coherent spectroscopy of rare-earth-ion doped whispering-gallery mode resonators

We perform an investigation into the properties of Pr3+:Y2SiO5 whispering gallery mode resonators as a first step towards achieving the strong coupling regime of cavity QED with rare-earth-ion doped crystals. Direct measurement of cavity QED parameters are made using photon echoes, giving good agreement with theoretical predictions. By comparing the ions at the surface of the resonator to those in the center it is determined that the physical process of making the resonator does not negatively affect the properties of the ions. Coupling between the ions and resonator is analyzed through the observation of optical bistability and normal-mode splitting.Comment: 8 pages, 9 figure

Generating EPR beams in a cavity optomechanical system

We propose a scheme to produce continuous variable entanglement between phase-quadrature amplitudes of two light modes in an optomechanical system. For proper driving power and detuning, the entanglement is insensitive with bath temperature and QQ of mechanical oscillator. Under realistic experimental conditions, we find that the entanglement could be very large even at room temperature.Comment: 4.1 pages, 4 figures, comments are welcome; to appear in PRA, published version with corrections of typo
