Novel RNAi delivery systems in the control of medical and veterinary pests
This review discusses the latest innovations in delivery technologies for RNA interference (RNAi) in gene knockdown in insects and acarines of medical and veterinary significance. RNAi offers unprecedented levels of precision in the study, control or even protection of invertebrate pests, but fundamental to its successful deployment is the need to deliver “trigger” RNA in a fashion that addresses the potential barriers of RNAi efficiency, safety, and the intended purpose of the knockdown

The influence of teaching strategies and behaviours in the EFL classroom on student motivation and anxiety
Although the research area of motivation and anxiety in language learning has experienced a surge in the last two decades, the relationship between teacher use of motivational strategies and behaviours, and student motivation and anxiety from the perspective of both teachers and students is under-researched. This longitudinal study, with two interventions four months apart, investigated the influence of teaching strategies and behaviours in the English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classroom on student motivation and anxiety in senior high schools in Limassol (Cyprus). It aimed to establish (1) which teaching strategies and behaviours students find motivating (2) which teaching strategies and behaviours positively influence student motivation and (3) which teaching strategies and behaviours negatively affect FL classroom anxiety.
Using a case-study approach with both qualitative and quantitative data and a range of analytical and interpretative methods, this study primarily utilised tailor-made questionnaires and bottom-up interpretive methods of qualitative data. Quantitative data from questionnaires were analysed using the statistical software programme SPSS 21 to produce both descriptive and inferential statistics. Thematic analysis was used to analyse further qualitative data from focus groups and interviews. Consulting both learners and teachers using a mixed methods approach, permitted triangulation of data from different perspectives, which together worked to enhance the integrity and credibility of the results.
Results showed that respect, support, awareness of students' needs and validation of progress and achievement were associated with increased motivation throughout the year. Unclear instructions and negative feedback were among factors associated with foreign language anxiety (FLA). The findings provide important resources for teachers and researchers in the field to build on in their own educational settings, and have relevance for other foreign language classrooms in similar cultural settings
Their Past in my Blood : Paule Marshall, Gayl Jones, and Octavia Butler\u27s Response to the Black Aesthetic
Paule Marshall’s The Chosen Place, The Timeless People (1969), Gayl Jones’ Corregidora (1975), and Octavia Butler’s Kindred (1979) enhance our conceptualization of black aestheticism and black nationalism as cultural and political movements. The writers use the novel as genre to question the ideological paradigm of a black nationalist aesthetic by providing alternative definitions of community, black women’s sexuality, and race relations. Because of the ways in which these writers respond to black aestheticism and black nationalism, they transform our understanding of movements often perceived as sexist, racist, homophobic, and anti-Semitic. An examination of their works reveals the need for additional critical inquiry into the Black Arts era. More importantly, this study suggests that these writers are deserving of more prominent placement within the African American literary canon as the thematic content of their novels presages that found in the works of more canonical writers like Toni Morrison, Alice Walker, and Gloria Naylor
Creating a self-induced dark spontaneous-force optical trap for neutral atoms
This communication describes the observation of a new type of dark
spontaneous-force optical trap (dark SPOT) obtained without the use of a mask
blocking the central part of the repumper laser beam. We observe that loading a
magneto-optical trap (MOT) from a continuous and intense flux of slowed atoms
and by appropriately tuning the frequency of the repumper laser is possible to
achieve basically the same effect of the dark SPOT, using a simpler apparatus.
This work characterizes the new system through measurements of absorption and
fluorescence imaging of the atomic cloud and presents a very simple model to
explain the main features of our observations. We believe that this new
approach may simplify the current experiments to produce quantum degenerated
gases.Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures, Submitted to Optics Communications (30/10/2003),

Myoblast fusion and innervation with rat motor nerve alter distribution of acetylcholinesterase and its mRNA in cultures of human muscle
AbstractTo elucidate the mechanisms underlying acetylcholinesterase (AChE) localization, we analyzed the distribution of AChE and Ache mRNA during myogenesis in cocultures of human muscle and fetal rat spinal cord. We observed a temporal coincidence in alterations of AChE localization and nuclei expressing the message, suggesting developmental regulation at the mRNA level. Nonuniform mRNA staining among nuclei suggests asynchronous regulation, also supporting an earlier proposal that transcription proceeds intermittently. Asynchrony seems to be overridden by generally acting factors during myoblast fusion, when message is up-regulated, and at the onset of muscle contractions, when it becomes restricted to some nuclei in the junctional region and focal patches of AChE appear near nerve contacts. Coincidence of mRNA down-regulation and synthesis of stable basal lamina-bound AChE suggests coordinated adaptation, so that sufficient enzyme may be derived from low message levels
Can Foot Exercises Alter Foot Posture, Strength, and Walking Foot Pressure Patterns in People with Severe Flat Foot?
Introduction/Purpose: Muscle training muscle control for barefoot running (i.e. doming seated[DS] and standing[DSt]) and post foot and ankle injury (i.e. seated plantar flexion and inversion[SPFI]) are common. Although studies demonstrated improvement in foot posture (validated foot posture index [FPI]) immediately following a 4-week exercise program this was not assessed in people with flatfoot. Also, more rigorous assessment of foot function is lacking (i.e. foot posture, strength, and plantar pressure during walking). There is clearly a need for more rigorous clinical data on the effect of foot exercises. The purpose of this pilot study was to assess the immediate effect of a 4-week exercise program on a comprehensive assessment of foot function to evaluate the potential for a more rigorous clinical trial
