Community Health Workers: A Holistic Solution for Individual and Community Health

    Get PDF
Community Health Workers (CHWs) go by many names, including outreach workers, patient navigators, peer health educators, and lay health advocates. CHWs help people overcome obstacles by accompanying them through treatment, monitoring needs for food and housing, leading education campaigns and empowering community members to take charge of their own health. As members of the communities they serve, CHWs establish relationships of trust with those they serve, bridging the gap between the clinic and community. Community Health Workers embrace a holistic conception of health, working not only in health care, but also with the social determinants of health such as poverty, education, and housing

HRXRD study of the theoretical densities of novel reactive sintered boride candidate neutron shielding materials

Reactive Sintered Borides (RSBs) are novel borocarbide materials derived from FeCr-based cemented tungsten (FeCr-cWCs) show considerable promise as compact radiation armour for proposed spherical tokamak,[1],[2],[3],[4],[5]. Six candidate compositions (four RSBs, two cWCs) were evaluated by high-resolution X-ray diffraction (XRD), inductively coupled plasma (ICP), energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to determine the atomic composition, phase presence, and theoretical density. RSB compositions were evaluated with initial boron contents equivalent to 25 at% 30 at%. All RSB compositions showed delamination and carbon enrichment in the bulk relative to the surface, consistent with non-optimal binder removal and insufficient sintering time. Phase abundance within RSBs derived from powder XRD was dominated by iron tungsten borides (FeWB/FeW2B2), tungsten borides (W2B5/WB) and iron borides. The most optimal RSB composition (B5T522W) with respect to physical properties and highest Ļ/Ļtheo had Ļtheo = 12.59 Ā± 0.01 g cm-3 for Ļ/Ļtheo = 99.3% and had the weigh-in and post-sintered W : B : Fe abundance closest to 1 : 1 : 1. This work indicates that despite their novelty, RSB materials can be optimized and in principle be processed using existing cWC processing routes

Implementation of High Blood Pressure Guidelines in Clinical Practice

Abstract This quality improvement project implemented 2017 Guidelines for the Prevention, Detection, Evaluation and Management of High Blood Pressure in Adults. An in-service education session on the 2017 High Blood Pressure Guidelines was provided to clinical staff. In addition, the AHA/ACC pooled cohort 10-year risk calculator was installed to computer desktops or smart phones, for providers. ā€œSeven simple tips to get an accurate blood pressure readingā€ (American Medical Association, 2016) was posted in exam rooms and proper measurement and documentation techniques were reviewed with clinical staff. Review of recommended non-pharmacological treatment methods with proper patient education documentation was also conducted. Comparison of pre and post intervention measurements of repeated blood pressure readings and patient education supported staff assertion that their practice was in alignment with these recommendations. Three out of four providers used the ASCVD risk calculator and found benefit in clinical decision-making and discussion of blood pressure management. ASCVD risk calculation was recorded in 18 records during the intervention period. ā€ÆIdentified needs include further reinforcement of new concepts and adding small blood pressure cuffs to standard exam room equipment. ā€ÆUse of ASCVD calculation for further risk stratification in those with Stage 1 hypertension was introduced and implementedā€Æinto practice

Physical Therapy Management Following Femoroacetabular Impingment Correction and Acetabular Labral Repair: A Case Report

    Get PDF
Hip pain is a common complaint amongst active individuals. One cause of hip pain in the athletic population is femoroacetabular impingement (FAI). FAI is characterized by impingement between the head of the femur and the acetabulum of the hip joint due to structural abnormalities. Patients with FAI complain of hip pain that progressively worsens and eventually interferes with activities of daily living, such as ambulation. This case report describes physical therapy management following arthroscopic hip surgery for the treatment of FAI and acetabular labral tears in both inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation settings

The Study of The effect of two Flavone Isomers Derived from Gnaphalium elegans and Achyrocline bogotensis in breast cancer.

Flavonoids are ubiquitous to all terrestrial plants and many are known to have anti-tumor activities. In this research project we studied the differential cytotoxic effects of two flavone isomers on human breast cancer cells (BT-474, SKBR-3, and MCF-7) and normal breast cells as a control (MCF-10A). The basis of the relationships between chemical structures, type and position of substituent groups and the effects these compounds exert specifically on cancer cells are not completely elucidated. These flavones are derived from plants native of Colombia, South America. These plants of the family Asteraceae, genera Gnaphalium and Achyrocline are reputed to have anti-cancer properties. The flavones are non-toxic to normal human cells. Our studies indicate that 3,5-dihydroxy-6,7,8-trimethoxy-2-phenyl-4H-chromen-4-one (3,5-dihydroxy-6,7,8-trimethoxy flavone, flavone B) is highly cytotoxic to poorly differentiated carcinomas of the breast such as SK-BR3, with minimal activity against more differentiated carcinomas of the same organs such BT-474. Immunoblot analysis suggests that the anti-tumor effects of flavone B in SKBR-3 may be mediated through the down regulation of the ERK pathway. ERK activation promotes cell proliferation, differentiation and survival. Additionally, flavone B down regulates PS6 in SKBR-3. PS6 controls protein translation by phosphorylating the S6 protein of the 40S ribosomal subunit. On the other hand, neither flavone A or B has a significant inhibitory effect on breast cancer cell line BT-474. The flavones were tested in the human fibrocystic mammary tissue MFC-10A, defined as a normal breast cell line, to demonstrate their lack of toxicity against normal cells

What Experience Canā€™t Tell: How to Show Reality in Young Adult Fiction, A Female Warriorā€™s Story

    Get PDF
Young adult literature is a medium that catapults our youth into fictional realms, gives them courage, and prepares them for realities of our world. As a female warrior, having served as a soldier in Afghanistan, I learned firsthand what a female warrior must be. While there are many YA novels written with women warriors as main characters, thereā€™s a significant lack of female warrior representation that resembles our modern day military and the trials female warriors face in a primarily male-dominated field. I have examined four authors who have tackled the issue of strong female warriors. While each author depicts particular, authentic aspects of a female warriorā€™s character, they leave out some crucial characteristics: emotional, mental, and physical strength. If any of these three is lacking, the female warrior must strengthen the weakness, so her true potential can be attained. I examine the character traits and messages of these fictional works in light of the realities I experienced as a member of the military. I also bring in research about women in the military and critical articles written about female warriors. In the novel I am writing, my experience has led me to create an accurate portrait of a modern-day female warrior. She is tough, but she also lives in a male-centric world that always stands ready to criticize her every weakness. My portrait of a female warrior always works to better herself so she can stand ready to protect and defend. In my novel, the main character stands at the cusp of a life choice to become a warrior, and she must follow through with her decision in the wake of the unexpectedly harsh military culture where nothing of worth is expected of her
