    MUNICIPAL SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT CRISES IN THE DEVELOPING COUNTRIES: A CASE STUDY OF PESHAWAR CITY

    Due to the speedy increase in population, the solid waste management issues are becoming a challenge for the developing countries. Unhealthy collection, improper transportation and open dumping of the Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) is causing a serious threat to the environment and the people residing in the surroundings. In Pakistan, unsustainable way of solid waste management, lack of the authorities to deal with effectively with the MSW and least vision of the society towards the emerging issues of the solid waste is depicting the worst situation in the country. To highlight the significant Municipal Solid Waste Management (MSWM) issues in the developing countries of the world, Peshawar city has been selected as a case study. Peshawar city is experiencing serious environmental issues due to speedy urbanization pace, rapid industrialization, deficiency of the authorities to manage the solid waste issues properly and lack of public awareness towards the challenging issue. Open dumping of the MSW on the open lands, utilized as dumping sites are responsible for the environmental problems increasing day by day. The research findings clearly reveal the MSWM crises in the city. Improper MSWM practices are not only creating air, land and water pollution but it also causes the blockage of open drains, smaller canals and ruining the aesthetics of the city

    Accessory medial cuneiform bone in a child: unreported site and review of literature

    Accessory ossicles of the foot are not uncommon finding in foot radiographs which has confused radiologists and orthopedic surgeons from time immemorial. Occasionally these bones are symptomatic, hindering daily activities of patients. We present a case report of an eleven years old girl with a symptomatic accessory medial cuneiform on the dorsal aspect of left foot. The child was evaluated radiologically and after a trial of failed conservative treatment, she was operated upon. Intraoperatively a superficial nerve on dorsum of this accessory ossicle was found, and the extra bone was excised. This accessory bone was found to be related to medial cuneiform bone at its dorsal and distal surface making to suggest its name as "Os cuneo-I metatarsale-I dorsale". Detailed radiological evaluation is mandatory for identification and exact anatomical localization of the extra bone before proceeding to excision, when non operative treatment fails to relieve the symptoms.

    Unmanned aerial vehicles enabled IoT platform for disaster management

    © 2019 by the authors. Efficient and reliable systems are required to detect and monitor disasters such as wildfires as well as to notify the people in the disaster-affected areas. Internet of Things (IoT) is the key paradigm that can address the multitude problems related to disaster management. In addition, an unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs)-enabled IoT platform connected via cellular network can further enhance the robustness of the disaster management system. The UAV-enabled IoT platform is based on three main research areas: (i) ground IoT network; (ii) communication technologies for ground and aerial connectivity; and (iii) data analytics. In this paper, we provide a holistic view of a UAVs-enabled IoT platform which can provide ubiquitous connectivity to both aerial and ground users in challenging environments such as wildfire management. We then highlight key challenges for the design of an efficient and reliable IoT platform. We detail a case study targeting the design of an efficient ground IoT network that can detect and monitor fire and send notifications to people using named data networking (NDN) architecture. The use of NDN architecture in a sensor network for IoT integrates pull-based communication to enable reliable and efficient message dissemination in the network and to notify the users as soon as possible in case of disastrous situations. The results of the case study show the enormous impact on the performance of IoT platform for wildfire management. Lastly, we draw the conclusion and outline future research directions in this field

    Learning paradigms for communication and computing technologies in IoT systems

Wireless communication and computation technologies are becoming increasingly complex and dynamic due to the sophisticated and ubiquitous Internet of things (IoT) applications. Therefore, future wireless networks and computation solutions must be able to handle these challenges and dynamic user requirements for the success of IoT systems. Recently, learning strategies (particularly deep learning and reinforcement learning) are explored immensely to deal with the complexity and dynamic nature of communication and computation technologies for IoT systems, mainly because of their power to predict and efficient data analysis. Learning strategies can significantly enhance the performance of IoT systems at different stages, including at IoT node level, local communication, long-range communication, edge gateway, cloud platform, and corporate data centers. This paper presents a comprehensive overview of learning strategies for IoT systems. We categorize learning paradigms for communication and computing technologies in IoT systems into reinforcement learning, Bayesian algorithms, stochastic learning, and miscellaneous. We then present research in IoT with the integration of learning strategies from the optimization perspective where the optimization objectives are categorized into maximization and minimization along with corresponding applications. Learning strategies are discussed to illustrate how these strategies can enhance the performance of IoT applications. We also identify the key performance indicators (KPIs) used to evaluate the performance of IoT systems and discuss learning algorithms for these KPIs.     Batch and Fixed-Bed Modeling of Adsorption Reactive Remazol Yellow Dye onto Granular Activated Carbon

    In this work, the adsorption of reactive yellow dye (Remazol yellow FG dye) by granular activated carbon (GAC) was investigated using batch and continuous process. The batch process involved determination the equilibrium isotherm curve either favorable or unfavorable by estimation relation between adsorption capacity and concentration of dye at different dosage of activated carbon. The results were fitted with equilibrium isotherm models Langmuir and Freundlich models with R2value (>0.97). Batch Kinetic study showed good fitting with pseudo second order model with R2 (0.987) at contact time 5 h. which provesthat the adsorption is chemisorptions nature. Continuous study was done by fixed bed column where breakthrough time was increased at flow rates (21.67, 12.5 and 6 ml/min) and initial dye concentration (80, 40, 20 and 10 mg/l) were decreased and bed depth was increased (5, 10, 15 and 20 cm). The adsorption data were fitted to the fixed-bed adsorption mathematical models Thomas and Yoon- Nelson models. The results fitted well to the Thomas and Yoon-Nelson models with correlation coefficient, R2≥ 0.944. Average relative error ARE% was applied to examine the theoretical and experimental results.

    The impact of M-ary rates on various quadrature amplitude modulation detection

    The 5G system-based cognitive radio network is promised to meet the requirements of huge data applications with spectrum. However, the M-ary effect on the detection has not been thoroughly investigated. In this paper, an M-ary of quadrature amplitude modulation detection system is studied. Many rates are used in this study 4, 16, 64, and 256 constellation points. The detection system is applied to cooperative spectrum sensing to enhance the performance of detection for various rates of M-ary with low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Further, three kinds of signals based 5G system are sensed: filtered-orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (F-OFDM), filter bank multi-carrier (FBMC), and universal filtered multi-carrier (UFMC). The best detection performance is obtained when the M-ary=4 and number of SUs=50 user, whereas the worst detection performance is obtained when the M-ary=256 and number of SUs=10 user, as revealed in the simulation results. In addition, the detection performance for the F-OFDM signal is better than that of UFMC and FBMC signals for SNR <0 dB

    The incidence and risk factors of hypocalcaemia after thyroid surgery

    Background: Hypocalcaemia is a well-recognized complication of thyroid surgery. It is the most often transient event that occurs after extensive thyroid resection that may require calcium and/or vitamin D supplements to alleviate or prevent the symptoms. Objective: of this study is to determine the incidence of hypocalcaemia after thyroid surgery and find out the risk factors involved regarding the patient age, gender, and muscular build, clinical diagnosis, the extent of surgery, ligation of the inferior thyroid artery, pathology report and the experience of the surgeon. Patients and methods: This prospective study was carried out on 100 patients who underwent thyroid surgery for various thyroid diseases at the surgical department of Baghdad teaching hospital in the period between November 2009 to November 2013.Serial serum calcium measurements were recorded as well as details of the operation, patient age and gender, ligation of the inferior thyroid artery or not, pathological report and experience of the operator. Hypocalcaemia was considered transient if it was resolved within 6 months and permanent if it persisted after 6 months and the patient was maintained on supplementation therapy of calcium and vitamin D. Results: We found that the incidence of post-thyroidectomy hypocalcaemia was 30 % and in the majority of the cases (24%) was transient, while it was permanent in only (6%) of cases and had occurred mainly after total thyroidectomy and in cases with ligation of the inferior thyroid artery. Conclusions: We concluded that post thyroidectomy hypocalcaemia is a relatively common complication, but it is transient in the majority of the patients. Its incidence is related to the extent of the surgery and can be reduced by the use of the correct surgical procedures.
