    The impact of an iPad-supported annotation and sharing technology on university students' learning

    © 2018 Elsevier Ltd iPads, or more generally tablet computers, have received rapid and widespread uptake across higher education. Despite this, there is limited evidence of how their use affects student learning within this context. This study focuses on the use of a tablet by the instructor to support the annotation and in-class sharing of students' work to create a collaborative learning environment within a first year undergraduate subject. This paper reports the results of an empirical study looking at the effect this tablet technology has on student performance using a sample of 741 first-year accounting students. The study uses data from enrolment and attendance records, end of semester examination results and student perceptions from a survey. Results indicate that class sharing of the instructor's and students' annotation of homework through the use of a tablet is associated with an improvement in student performance on procedural or equation-based questions as well as increased student engagement. However, contrary to expectations, the introduction of in class annotations was associated with a decline in student performance on theoretical, extended response questions. The authors argue that affordances of the tablet, when used in a student-centred way, can introduce a bias towards some kinds of interactions over others. This large-scale study of in-class tablet use suggests that though the tablets may be positively associated with student engagement and satisfaction, caution must be exercised in how the use by the instructor affects the classroom environment and what students learn. These findings have particular relevance to university learning contexts with equation-centric subjects such as those in Business and STEM

    How does students' general academic achievement moderate the implications of social networking on specific levels of learning performance?

    © 2019 This study examines to what extent the use of social networking sites impacts different levels of learning. In particular, we examine how post-secondary students' general academic achievement, reflected by grade point average scores, moderate these impacts. The impacts of social networking noted in the literature vary considerably, with positive and negative implications on student learning noted. Examining the moderating effects of students' general academic achievement may address the reasons for such inconsistency in impacts observed. To better understand the implications of social networking on student learning, we examine the implications of student time spent in total on Facebook and on different reasons for using Facebook through a series of ordinary least squares (OLS) regressions. The data on students' social networking use is collected via a survey and data retrieved from institution records on student performance. The context of this study is a first year equation and problem solving centric subject, consistent with the subject matter emphasised in business and STEM disciplines. The findings indicate social networking use puts students at risk who are generally lower academic achievers; in particular their performance is lower across the least difficult levels of learning performance with greater Facebook use. In contrast the performance of higher academic achievers is not significantly impacted. The findings highlight the importance of considering students' general academic achievement as a moderator of the relationship between social networking use and learning performance, and also the importance of considering the impact on specific levels of learning

    Increasing Student Engagement and Performance in Introductory Accounting through Student-Generated Screencasts

    The paper reports the findings of a trial of student generated screencasts in an introductory accounting subject. This paper examines the effect of this screencast project on student engagement and performance. The effect on student engagement is examined using data from a pre and post screencast project student survey and performance effects examined by analysing the performance of students completing and not completing the project. The results of the study suggest the screencast project facilitated higher student engagement and performance. These findings have important implications for integrating technologies such as screencasting to facilitate enhanced learning outcomes in introductory accounting subjects

    The replication in human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) of unique HIV-1 that select tRNA(His) or tRNA(Lys1,2) for reverse transcription was compared to the wild-type virus that uses tRNA(Lys,3). HIV-1 with only the primer-binding site (PBS) changed to be complementary to these alternative tRNAs initially replicated more slowly than the wild-type virus in PBMC, although all viruses eventually reached equivalent growth as measured by p24 antigen. Viruses with only a PBS complementary to the 3' terminal 18 nucleotides of tRNA(His) or tRNA(Lys1,2) reverted to use tRNA(Lys3). HIV-1 with mutations in the U5-PBS to allow selection of tRNA(His) and tRNA(Lys1,2) following long-term growth in SupT1 cells were also evaluated for growth and PBS stability following replication in PBMC. Although both viruses initially grew slower than wild type, they maintained a PBS complementary to the starting tRNA and did not revert to the wild-type PBS after long-term culture in PBMC. Analysis of the U5-PBS regions following long-term culture in PBMC also revealed few changes from the starting sequences. The virus that stably used tRNA(His) was less infectious than the wild type. In contrast, the virus that stably used tRNA(Lys1,2) evolved to be as infectious as wild-type virus following extended culture in PBMC. The results of these studies highlight the impact of the host cell on the tRNA primer selection process and subsequent infectivity of HIV-1

    Re-engage: A novel nurse-led program for survivors of childhood cancer who are disengaged from cancer-related care

    Background: Survivors of childhood cancer often experience treatmentrelated chronic health conditions. Survivorship care improves survivors' physical and mental health, yet many are disengaged from care. Innovative models of care are necessary to overcome patient-reported barriers to accessing survivorship care and to maximize survivors' health. Methods:We piloted a novel survivorship program, called "Reengage,"a distance-delivered, nurse-led intervention aiming to engage, educate, and empower survivors not receiving any cancerrelated care. Re-engage involves a nurse-led consultation delivered via telephone/online to establish survivors' medical history and needs. Participants completed questionnaires at baseline, 1 month postintervention, and 6-month follow-up. Results: A total of 27 survivors who had not accessed survivorship care in the last 2 years participated (median age, 31 years; interquartile range [IQR], 27-39 years); of which, 82% were at high-risk for treatment-related complications. Participation in Re-engage was high (75%) and there was no attrition once survivors enrolled. At 1 month postintervention, 92% of survivors reported that Re-engage was "beneficial,"which all survivors reported at 6-month follow-up. Survivors' overall satisfaction with their care increased from 52% before Re-engage to 84% at 1 month postintervention. Survivors' mean self-efficacy scores remained similar from baseline to 1 month postintervention (b520.33, 95% CI, 21.31 to 0.65), but increased significantly from baseline to 6-month follow-up (b 5 1.64, 95% CI, 0.28-3.00). At 6-month follow-up, 73% of survivors showed an increase in health-related self-efficacy compared with baseline. Conclusions: Re-engage is a highly acceptable and feasible intervention and promotes health-related self-efficacy, which is integral to survivors being advocates for their own health. Further empirical work is needed to evaluate the long-term efficacy of Re-engage. Trial registration: ACTRN12618000194268

    The influence of in-pregnancy smoking cessation programmes on partner quitting and women's social support mobilization: a randomized controlled trial [ISRCTN89131885]

    BACKGROUND: Smoking cessation interventions in pregnancy could influence a woman's social behaviour and her partner's smoking behaviour, but this has not been examined in any published randomized trials. METHOD: 918 women smoking at booking for antenatal care were enrolled in a cluster-randomized trial of three interventions: standard care, self-help manual and enhanced stage-based counselling, or self-help manual, enhanced stage-based counselling and use of an interactive computer program. The outcomes were change in social support received by women between booking for maternity care and 30 weeks gestation and 10 days postpartum and reported cessation in the woman's partner at these times. RESULTS: Few pregnant women's partners stopped smoking (4.1% at 30 weeks of gestation and 5.8% at 10 days postpartum) and the probability of quitting did not differ significantly by trial arm. Women's scores on the Inventory of Socially Supportive Behaviors showed a slight decline from booking to 30 weeks gestation, and a slight increase to 10 days postpartum, but these changes did not differ significantly by trial arm. CONCLUSION: The stage-based interventions tested in this trial aimed partly to influence women's mobilization of support and might have influenced partners' quitting, but there was no evidence that they did so. Given that women and their partners often stopped smoking together, future interventions to prevent smoking in pregnant women could encourage both partners to quit together

    Iron deposition and inflammation in multiple sclerosis. Which one comes first?

    Whether iron deposition is an epiphenomenon of the multiple sclerosis (MS) disease process or may play a primary role in triggering inflammation and disease development remains unclear at this time, and should be studied at the early stages of disease pathogenesis. However, it is difficult to study the relationship between iron deposition and inflammation in early MS due to the delay between the onset of symptoms and diagnosis, and the poor availability of tissue specimens. In a recent article published in BMC Neuroscience, Williams et al. investigated the relationship between inflammation and iron deposition using an original animal model labeled as "cerebral experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis", which develops CNS perivascular iron deposits. However, the relative contribution of iron deposition vs. inflammation in the pathogenesis and progression of MS remains unknown. Further studies should establish the association between inflammation, reduced blood flow, iron deposition, microglia activation and neurodegeneration. Creating a representative animal model that can study independently such relationship will be the key factor in this endeavor

    How does the tobacco industry attempt to influence marketing regulations? A systematic review

    BACKGROUND: The Framework Convention on Tobacco Control makes a number of recommendations aimed at restricting the marketing of tobacco products. Tobacco industry political activity has been identified as an obstacle to Parties' development and implementation of these provisions. This study systematically reviews the existing literature on tobacco industry efforts to influence marketing regulations and develops taxonomies of 1) industry strategies and tactics and 2) industry frames and arguments. METHODS: Searches were conducted between April-July 2011, and updated in March 2013. Articles were included if they made reference to tobacco industry efforts to influence marketing regulations; supported claims with verifiable evidence; were written in English; and concerned the period 1990-2013. 48 articles met the review criteria. Narrative synthesis was used to combine the evidence. RESULTS: 56% of articles focused on activity in North America, Europe or Australasia, the rest focusing on Asia (17%), South America, Africa or transnational activity. Six main political strategies and four main frames were identified. The tobacco industry frequently claims that the proposed policy will have negative unintended consequences, that there are legal barriers to regulation, and that the regulation is unnecessary because, for example, industry does not market to youth or adheres to a voluntary code. The industry primarily conveys these arguments through direct and indirect lobbying, the promotion of voluntary codes and alternative policies, and the formation of alliances with other industrial sectors. The majority of tactics and arguments were used in multiple jurisdictions. CONCLUSIONS: Tobacco industry political activity is far more diverse than suggested by existing taxonomies of corporate political activity. Tactics and arguments are repeated across jurisdictions, suggesting that the taxonomies of industry tactics and arguments developed in this paper are generalisable to multiple jurisdictions and can be used to predict industry activity

    An Atlas of the Speed of Copy Number Changes in Animal Gene Families and Its Implications

    The notion that gene duplications generating new genes and functions is commonly accepted in evolutionary biology. However, this assumption is more speculative from theory rather than well proven in genome-wide studies. Here, we generated an atlas of the rate of copy number changes (CNCs) in all the gene families of ten animal genomes. We grouped the gene families with similar CNC dynamics into rate pattern groups (RPGs) and annotated their function using a novel bottom-up approach. By comparing CNC rate patterns, we showed that most of the species-specific CNC rates groups are formed by gene duplication rather than gene loss, and most of the changes in rates of CNCs may be the result of adaptive evolution. We also found that the functions of many RPGs match their biological significance well. Our work confirmed the role of gene duplication in generating novel phenotypes, and the results can serve as a guide for researchers to connect the phenotypic features to certain gene duplications
