Structural study on Pr0.55(Ca[1-y]Sr[y])0.45MnO3 thin films on perovskite (011) substrate

Structural study on the photo-switching system Pr{0.55}(Ca{1-y}Sr y){0.45}MnO3 thin films on perovskite (011) substrate has been made with synchrotron radiation diffraction experiment. The insulating phase of y=0.20 sample was found to be an antiferro-orbital ordered phase with large lattice distortion and the ferromagnetic metallic phase of y=0.40 film show no distinct lattice distortion from the paramagnetic phase, which are very similar with (Nd,Pr)0.5Sr0.5MnO3 films. A striking contrast of the orbital ordered phase of y=0.20 film to (Nd,Pr)0.5Sr0.5MnO3 films was its untwinned structure.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures. Studies on ferrous ion-induced lipid peroxidation of rat liver mitochondria. I. Effect of inorganic phosphate

Effect of inorganic phosphate on ferrous ion- and ascorbate-induced lipid. peroxidations of isolated rat liver mitochondria was investigated. As a result it has been shown that phosphate accelerates the ferrous ion.induced lipid peroxidation; namely, phos. phate shortens the induction lag period of the lipid peroxidation reaction but the malondialdehyde after onset of its production is yielded at the same rate in various concentrations of phosphate. On the other hand, phosphate inhibits ascorbate.induced lipid peroxidation. There are stoichiometric interactions between the concentration of phos. phate and the induction period. Oxygen uptake by mitochondria was observed in the presence of both ferrous ion and phosphate at initial step of the reaction without being accompanied by malondialdehyde production, and afterwards there occurred malondialdehyde production with rapid rate of the oxygen uptake. Possible mechanisms and interactions among ferrous ion, ascorbate and phosphate were discussed.</p

Quadrupole moments in chiral material DyFe3(BO3)4 observed by resonant x-ray diffraction

By means of circularly polarized x-ray beam at Dy L3 and Fe K absorption edges, the chiral structure of the electric quadrupole was investigated for a single crystal of DyFe3(BO3)4 in which both Dy and Fe ions are arranged in spiral manners. The integrated intensity of the resonant x- ray diffraction of space-group forbidden reflections 004 and 005 is interpreted within the electric dipole transitions from Dy 2p3 to 5d and Fe 1s to 4p, respectively. We have confirmed that the 2 handedness of the crystal observed at Dy L3 and Fe K edges is consistent with that observed at Dy M5 edge in the previous study. By analyzing the azimuth scans of the diffracted intensity, the electronic quadrupole moments of Dy 5d and Fe 4p are derived. The temperature profiles of the integrated intensity of 004 at the Dy L3 and the Fe K edges are similar to those of Dy-O and Fe-O bond lengths, while that at the Dy M5 edge does not. The results indicate that the helix chiral orientations of quadrupole moments due to Dy 5d and Fe 4p electrons are more strongly affected by the crystal fields than Dy 4f

The nirSTBM region coding for cytochrome cd1-dependent nitrite respiration of Pseudomonas stutzeri consists of a cluster of mono-, di-, and tetraheme proteins

AbstractGenes for respiratory nitrite reduction (denitrification) of Pseudomonas stutzeri are clustered within 7 kbp. A 4.6-kbp Hind III-Kpn I fragment carrying nirS, the structural gene for cytochrome cd1, was sequenced. An open reading frame immediately downstream of nirScodes for a 22.8-kDa protein with four heme c-binding motifs. Mutagenesis of this gene causes an apparent defect in electron donation to cytochrome cd1. Following this ORF are the structural genes for cytochrome c552, cytochrome c551, and ORF5 that codes for a 11.9-kDa monoheme protein. All cytochromes have a signal sequence for protein export

Wage and Working-Hour Bargaining under Strategic Employment Decision Making

Bargaining over wage and working hours under predetermined level of employment is considered. Separate determination of the number of the workers employed and the hours worked per worker enable the firm to maximize the profit with respect to the number of the workers. The analysis has several implications on such topics as rent sharing or the aggregate supply
