Records an interview with Charles Wagner, who came to the Shenandoah Valley in 1935, after enlisting in the Civilian Conservation Corps, (CCC), and was stationed near Luray, Virginia. Describes his career in the CCC, working as a laborer, cook, truck driver and eventually being promoted to First Sergeant. Mr. Wagner describes the hierarchy of the CCC camps, the command structure and the types of work performed by the enrollees. Detailed accounts of everyday life in the camps, from the living and working conditions to the educational and recreational opportunities are given. Mr. Wagner also relates his first-hand experiences with local entrepreneur George Freeman Pollock, owner of nearby Skyland resort, who was a major influence in the establishment of Shenandoah National Park.

Strange Mesons as a Probe for Dense Nuclear Matter
The production and propagation of kaons and antikaons has been studied in
symmetric nucleus-nucleus collisions in the SIS energy range. The ratio of the
excitation functions of K^+ production in Au+Au and C+C collisions increases
with decreasing beam energy. This effect was predicted for a soft nuclear
equation-of-state. In noncentral Au+Au collisions, the K^+ mesons are
preferentially emitted perpendicular to the reaction plane. The K^-/K^+ ratio
from A+A collisions at beam energies which are equivalent with respect to the
threshold is found to be about two orders of magnitude larger than the
corresponding ratio from proton-proton collisions. Both effects are considered
to be experimental signatures for a modification of kaon properties in the

Dielectric properties of charge ordered LuFe2O4 revisited: The apparent influence of contacts
We show results of broadband dielectric measurements on the charge ordered,
proposed to be mul- tiferroic material LuFe2O4. The temperature and frequency
dependence of the complex permittivity as investigated for temperatures above
and below the charge-oder transition near T_CO ~ 320 K and for frequencies up
to 1 GHz can be well described by a standard equivalent-circuit model
considering Maxwell-Wagner-type contacts and hopping induced AC-conductivity.
No pronounced contribution of intrinsic dipolar polarization could be found and
thus the ferroelectric character of the charge order in LuFe2O4 has to be

Der Philosoph aus Sardinien, von Kindes Tagen an in Zweisprachigkeit (Sardisch-Italienisch) geübt, hat ein feines Sensorium für kulturelle Differenzen ausgebildet. In seinen Gefängnisjahren übersetzt er – als intellektuelles Training – aus dem Russischen und dem Deutschen ins Italienische, und in den Gefängnisheften setzt er sich wiederholt mit dem Begriff der traducibilità (Übersetzbarkeit) auseinander: Übersetzbarkeit von Sprachen, aber auch von Kulturen. Der Artikel geht den Linien nach, die von Gramscis Überlegungen zu der aktuellen Diskussion gezogen werden können, und diskutiert am Ende vergleichend die Positionen Homi K.
