Finite difference schemes for the symmetric Keyfitz-Kranzer system
We are concerned with the convergence of numerical schemes for the initial
value problem associated to the Keyfitz-Kranzer system of equations. This
system is a toy model for several important models such as in elasticity
theory, magnetohydrodynamics, and enhanced oil recovery. In this paper we prove
the convergence of three difference schemes. Two of these schemes is shown to
converge to the unique entropy solution. Finally, the convergence is
illustrated by several examples.Comment: 31 page
Near-Limb Zeeman and Hanle Diagnostics
"Weak" magnetic-field diagnostics in faint objects near the bright solar disk
are discussed in terms of the level of non-object signatures, in particular, of
the stray light in telescopes. Calculated dependencies of the stray light
caused by diffraction at the 0.5-, 1.6-, and 4-meter entrance aperture are
presented. The requirements for micro-roughness of refractive and reflective
primary optics are compared. Several methods for reducing the stray light (the
Lyot coronagraphic technique, multiple stages of apodizing in the focal and
exit pupil planes, apodizing in the entrance aperture plane with a special
mask), and reducing the random and systematic errors are noted. An acceptable
level of stray light in telescopes is estimated for the V-profile recording
with a signal-to-noise ratio greater than three. Prospects for the limb
chromosphere magnetic measurements are indicated.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figure
Faster Approximate String Matching for Short Patterns
We study the classical approximate string matching problem, that is, given
strings and and an error threshold , find all ending positions of
substrings of whose edit distance to is at most . Let and
have lengths and , respectively. On a standard unit-cost word RAM with
word size we present an algorithm using time When is
short, namely, or this
improves the previously best known time bounds for the problem. The result is
achieved using a novel implementation of the Landau-Vishkin algorithm based on
tabulation and word-level parallelism.Comment: To appear in Theory of Computing System
Spin fluctuations in nearly magnetic metals from ab-initio dynamical spin susceptibility calculations:application to Pd and Cr95V5
We describe our theoretical formalism and computational scheme for making
ab-initio calculations of the dynamic paramagnetic spin susceptibilities of
metals and alloys at finite temperatures. Its basis is Time-Dependent Density
Functional Theory within an electronic multiple scattering, imaginary time
Green function formalism. Results receive a natural interpretation in terms of
overdamped oscillator systems making them suitable for incorporation into spin
fluctuation theories. For illustration we apply our method to the nearly
ferromagnetic metal Pd and the nearly antiferromagnetic chromium alloy Cr95V5.
We compare and contrast the spin dynamics of these two metals and in each case
identify those fluctuations with relaxation times much longer than typical
electronic `hopping times'Comment: 21 pages, 9 figures. To appear in Physical Review B (July 2000
Big Data in Transfusion Medicine and Artificial Intelligence Analysis for Red Blood Cell Quality Control
peer reviewedBackground: ``Artificial intelligence'' and ``big data'' increasingly take the step from just being interesting concepts to being relevant or even part of our lives. This general statement holds also true for transfusion medicine. Besides all advancements in transfusion medicine, there is not yet an established red blood cell quality measure, which is generally applied. Summary: We highlight the usefulness of big data in transfusion medicine. Furthermore, we emphasize in the example of quality control of red blood cell units the application of artificial intelligence. Key Messages: A variety of concepts making use of big data and artificial intelligence are readily available but still await to be implemented into any clinical routine. For the quality control of red blood cell units, clinical validation is still required
Impact of post-transplantation maintenance therapy on health-related quality of life in patients with multiple myeloma: data from the Connect® MM Registry
Maintenance therapy after autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT) is recommended for use in multiple myeloma (MM); however, more data are needed on its impact on health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Presented here is an analysis of HRQoL in a Connect MM registry cohort of patients who received ASCT ± maintenance therapy. The Connect MM Registry is one of the earliest and largest, active, observational, prospective US registry of patients with symptomatic newly diagnosed MM. Patients completed the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-MM (FACT-MM) version 4, EuroQol-5D (EQ-5D) questionnaire, and Brief Pain Inventory (BPI) at study entry and quarterly thereafter until death or study discontinuation. Patients in three groups were analyzed: any maintenance therapy (n = 244), lenalidomide-only maintenance therapy (n = 169), and no maintenance therapy (n = 137); any maintenance and lenalidomide-only maintenance groups were not mutually exclusive. There were no significant differences in change from pre-ASCT baseline between any maintenance (P = 0.60) and lenalidomide-only maintenance (P = 0.72) versus no maintenance for the FACT-MM total score. There were also no significant differences in change from pre-ASCT baseline between any maintenance and lenalidomide-only maintenance versus no maintenance for EQ-5D overall index, BPI, FACT-MM Trial Outcomes Index, and myeloma subscale scores. In all three groups, FACT-MM, EQ-5D Index, and BPI scores improved after ASCT; FACT-MM and BPI scores deteriorated at disease progression. These data suggest that post-ASCT any maintenance or lenalidomide-only maintenance does not negatively impact patients' HRQoL. Additional research is needed to verify these findings
Evidence for charge localization in the ferromagnetic phase of La_(1-x)Ca_(x)MnO_3 from High real-space-resolution x-ray diffraction
High real-space-resolution atomic pair distribution functions of
La_(1-x)Ca_(x)MnO_3 (x=0.12, 0.25 and 0.33) have been measured using
high-energy x-ray powder diffraction to study the size and shape of the MnO_6
octahedron as a function of temperature and doping. In the paramagnetic
insulating phase we find evidence for three distinct bond-lengths (~ 1.88, 1.95
and 2.15A) which we ascribe to Mn^{4+}-O, Mn^{3+}-O short and Mn^{3+}-O long
bonds respectively. In the ferromagnetic metallic (FM) phase, for x=0.33 and
T=20K, we find a single Mn-O bond-length; however, as the metal-insulator
transition is approached either by increasing T or decreasing x, intensity
progressively appears around r=2.15 and in the region 1.8 - 1.9A suggesting the
appearance of Mn^{3+}-O long bonds and short Mn^{4+}-O bonds. This is strong
evidence that charge localized and delocalized phases coexist close to the
metal-insulator transition in the FM phase.Comment: 8 pages, 8 postscript figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.
Interplay between edge states and simple bulk defects in graphene nanoribbons
We study the interplay between the edge states and a single impurity in a
zigzag graphene nanoribbon. We use tight-binding exact diagonalization
techniques, as well as density functional theory calculations to obtain the
eigenvalue spectrum, the eigenfunctions, as well the dependence of the local
density of states (LDOS) on energy and position. We note that roughly half of
the unperturbed eigenstates in the spectrum of the finite-size ribbon hybridize
with the impurity state, and the corresponding eigenvalues are shifted with
respect to their unperturbed values. The maximum shift and hybridization occur
for a state whose energy is inverse proportional to the impurity potential;
this energy is that of the impurity peak in the DOS spectrum. We find that the
interference between the impurity and the edge gives rise to peculiar
modifications of the LDOS of the nanoribbon, in particular to oscillations of
the edge LDOS. These effects depend on the size of the system, and decay with
the distance between the edge and the impurity.Comment: 10 pages, 15 figures, revtex
