Testing Binary Population Synthesis Models with Hot Subdwarfs
Models of binary star interactions have been successful in explaining the
origin of field hot subdwarf (sdB) stars in short period systems, but
longer-period systems that formed via Roche-lobe overflow (RLOF) mass transfer
from the present sdB to its companion have received less attention. We map sets
of initial binaries into present-day binaries that include sdBs and
main-sequence stars, distinguishing "observable" sdBs from "hidden" ones. We
aim to find out whether (1) the existing catalogues of sdBs are sufficiently
fair samples of all the kinds of sdB binaries that theory predicts; or instead
whether (2) large predicted hidden populations mandate the construction of new
catalogues, perhaps using wide-field imaging surveys such as 2MASS, SDSS, and
Galex. We also report on a pilot study to identify hidden subdwarfs, using

Draft whole genome sequences of the periodontal pathobionts Porphyromonas gingivalis, Prevotella intermedia and Tannerella forsythia contain phase variable restriction modification systems
The periodontal strains used were collected during previous studies performed at the University of Cardiff (strains WW414, WW855 and WW2096), University of Bristol (WW2834, WW2842, WW2866, WW2881, WW28585, WW2903, WW2931, WW2952, WW3039, WW3040, and WW3102), King’s College London (WW5019, WW5127, and WW10960) and Queen Mary University of London (WW11663). Illumina sequencing was performed by the NUCLEUS Genomics Core Facility and data analysis used the Spectre2 and Alice2 High Performance Computing Facility at the University of Leicester. Will 2000-Era Retirees Experience the Worst Retirement Outcomes in U.S. History? A Progress Report after 10 Years
We find evidence that retirees in 2000, in particular, are on course to potentially experience the worst retirement outcomes of any retiree since 1926. This holds for a wide variety of asset allocations and withdrawal rate strategies. Wealth depletion is taking place more rapidly for 2000-era retirees than for retirees who even endured the Great Depression or the stagflation of the 1970s. Though moderate inflation during the past decade has resulted in current withdrawal rates that are a bit less for the 2000 retiree than for some retirees in the 1960s, this is hardly reassuring with further analysis based on the required future asset returns needed for sustainability. Our findings cast doubt as to whether the 4 percent withdrawal rate rule will be sustainable for turn-of-the-century retirees
Vaccination with live attenuated simian immunodeficiency virus for 21 days protects against superinfection
AbstractThe identification of mechanisms that prevent infection with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) or simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) would facilitate the development of an effective AIDS vaccine. In time-course experiments, protection against detectable superinfection with homologous wild-type SIV was achieved within 21 days of inoculation with live attenuated SIV, prior to the development of detectable anti-SIV humoral immunity. Partial protection against superinfection was achieved within 10 days of inoculation with live attenuated SIV, prior to the development of detectable anti-SIV humoral and cellular immunity. Furthermore, co-inoculation of live attenuated SIV with wild-type SIV resulted in a significant reduction in peak virus loads compared to controls that received wild-type SIV alone. These findings imply that innate immunity or non-immune mechanisms are a significant component of early protection against superinfection conferred by inoculation with live attenuated SIV
