Anisotropic interactions of a single spin and dark-spin spectroscopy in diamond
The nitrogen-vacancy (N-V) center in diamond is a promising atomic-scale
system for solid-state quantum information processing. Its spin-dependent
photoluminescence has enabled sensitive measurements on single N-V centers,
such as: electron spin resonance, Rabi oscillations, single-shot spin readout
and two-qubit operations with a nearby 13C nuclear spin. Furthermore, room
temperature spin coherence times as long as 58 microseconds have been reported
for N-V center ensembles. Here, we have developed an angle-resolved
magneto-photoluminescence microscopy apparatus to investigate the anisotropic
electron spin interactions of single N-V centers at room temperature. We
observe negative peaks in the photoluminescence as a function of both magnetic
field magnitude and angle that are explained by coherent spin precession and
anisotropic relaxation at spin level anti-crossings. In addition, precise field
alignment unmasks the resonant coupling to neighboring dark nitrogen spins that
are not otherwise detected by photoluminescence. The latter results demonstrate
a means of investigating small numbers of dark spins via a single bright spin

Prognostic impact of FAS/CD95/APO-1 in urothelial cancers: decreased expression of Fas is associated with disease progression
The death receptor Fas (Apo1/CD95) and Fas ligand (FasL) system is recognised as a major pathway for the induction of apoptosis in vivo, and antiapoptosis via its blockade plays a critical role in carcinogenesis and progression in several malignancies. However, the function of Fas–FasL system in urothelial cancer (UC) has not been elucidated. We therefore investigated the expression of Fas, FasL and Decoy receptor 3 for FasL (DcR3) in UC specimens and cell lines, and examined the cytotoxic effect of an anti-Fas-activating monoclonal antibody (mAb) in vitro. Immunohistochemical examinations of Fas-related molecules were performed on 123 UC and 30 normal urothelium surgical specimens. Normal urothelium showed Fas staining in the cell membrane and cytoplasm. In UC, less frequent Fas expression was significantly associated with a higher pathological grade (P<0.0001), a more advanced stage (P=0.023) and poorer prognosis (P=0.010). Fas and the absence thereof were suggested to be crucial factors with which to select patients requiring more aggressive treatment. Moreover, low-dose anti-Fas-activating mAb sensitised resistant cells to adriamycin, and this synergistic effect could be applied in the development of new treatment strategy for UC patients with multidrug-resistant tumours
Protective versus pathogenic anti-CD4 immunity: insights from the study of natural resistance to HIV infection
HIV-1 exposure causes several dramatic unbalances in the immune system homeostasis. Here, we will focus on the paradox whereby CD4 specific autoimmune responses, which are expected to contribute to the catastrophic loss of most part of the T helper lymphocyte subset in infected patients, may display the characteristics of an unconventional protective immunity in individuals naturally resistant to HIV-1 infection. Reference to differences in fine epitope mapping of these two oppositely polarized outcomes will be presented, with particular reference to partially or totally CD4-gp120 complex-specific antibodies. The fine tuning of the anti-self immune response to the HIV-1 receptor may determine whether viral exposure will result in infection or, alternatively, protective immunity
Evolution of scaling emergence in large-scale spatial epidemic spreading
Background: Zipf's law and Heaps' law are two representatives of the scaling
concepts, which play a significant role in the study of complexity science. The
coexistence of the Zipf's law and the Heaps' law motivates different
understandings on the dependence between these two scalings, which is still
hardly been clarified.
Methodology/Principal Findings: In this article, we observe an evolution
process of the scalings: the Zipf's law and the Heaps' law are naturally shaped
to coexist at the initial time, while the crossover comes with the emergence of
their inconsistency at the larger time before reaching a stable state, where
the Heaps' law still exists with the disappearance of strict Zipf's law. Such
findings are illustrated with a scenario of large-scale spatial epidemic
spreading, and the empirical results of pandemic disease support a universal
analysis of the relation between the two laws regardless of the biological
details of disease. Employing the United States(U.S.) domestic air
transportation and demographic data to construct a metapopulation model for
simulating the pandemic spread at the U.S. country level, we uncover that the
broad heterogeneity of the infrastructure plays a key role in the evolution of
scaling emergence.
Conclusions/Significance: The analyses of large-scale spatial epidemic
spreading help understand the temporal evolution of scalings, indicating the
coexistence of the Zipf's law and the Heaps' law depends on the collective
dynamics of epidemic processes, and the heterogeneity of epidemic spread
indicates the significance of performing targeted containment strategies at the

Treatment of bipolar disorders during pregnancy: maternal and fetal safety and challenges

Patients and clinicians are faced with difficult choices at every turn, and no approach is without risk. Stopping effective pharmacotherapy during pregnancy exposes the patient and her baby to potential harms related to bipolar relapses and residual mood symptom-related dysfunction. Continuing effective pharmacotherapy during pregnancy may prevent these occurrences for many; however, some of the most effective pharmacotherapies (such as valproate) have been associated with the occurrence of congenital malformations or other adverse neonatal effects in offspring. Very little is known about the reproductive safety profile and clinical effectiveness of atypical antipsychotic drugs when used to treat bipolar disorder during pregnancy. In this paper, we provide a clinically focused review of the available information on potential maternal and fetal risks of untreated or undertreated maternal bipolar disorder during pregnancy, the effectiveness of interventions for bipolar disorder management during pregnancy, and potential obstetric, fetal, and neonatal risks associated with core foundational pharmacotherapies for bipolar disorder.
