The stransverse mass, MT2, in special cases
This document describes some special cases in which the stransverse mass,
MT2, may be calculated by non-iterative algorithms. The most notable special
case is that in which the visible particles and the hypothesised invisible
particles are massless -- a situation relevant to its current usage in the
Large Hadron Collider as a discovery variable, and a situation for which no
analytic answer was previously known. We also derive an expression for MT2 in
another set of new (though arguably less interesting) special cases in which
the missing transverse momentum must point parallel or anti parallel to the
visible momentum sum. In addition, we find new derivations for already known
MT2 solutions in a manner that maintains manifest contralinear boost invariance
throughout, providing new insights into old results. Along the way, we stumble
across some unexpected results and make conjectures relating to geometric forms

General analysis of signals with two leptons and missing energy at the Large Hadron Collider
A signal of two leptons and missing energy is challenging to analyze at the
Large Hadron Collider (LHC) since it offers only few kinematical handles. This
signature generally arises from pair production of heavy charged particles
which each decay into a lepton and a weakly interacting stable particle. Here
this class of processes is analyzed with minimal model assumptions by
considering all possible combinations of spin 0, 1/2 or 1, and of weak
iso-singlets, -doublets or -triplets for the new particles. Adding to existing
work on mass and spin measurements, two new variables for spin determination
and an asymmetry for the determination of the couplings of the new particles
are introduced. It is shown that these observables allow one to independently
determine the spin and the couplings of the new particles, except for a few
cases that turn out to be indistinguishable at the LHC. These findings are
corroborated by results of an alternative analysis strategy based on an

4-dimensional functional profiling in the convulsant-treated larval zebrafish brain

Available from Springer Nature via the DOI in this record.Functional neuroimaging, using genetically-encoded Ca(2+) sensors in larval zebrafish, offers a powerful combination of high spatiotemporal resolution and higher vertebrate relevance for quantitative neuropharmacological profiling. Here we use zebrafish larvae with pan-neuronal expression of GCaMP6s, combined with light sheet microscopy and a novel image processing pipeline, for the 4D profiling of chemoconvulsant action in multiple brain regions. In untreated larvae, regions associated with autonomic functionality, sensory processing and stress-responsiveness, consistently exhibited elevated spontaneous activity. The application of drugs targeting different convulsant mechanisms (4-Aminopyridine, Pentylenetetrazole, Pilocarpine and Strychnine) resulted in distinct spatiotemporal patterns of activity. These activity patterns showed some interesting parallels with what is known of the distribution of their respective molecular targets, but crucially also revealed system-wide neural circuit responses to stimulation or suppression. Drug concentration-response curves of neural activity were identified in a number of anatomically-defined zebrafish brain regions, and in vivo larval electrophysiology, also conducted in 4dpf larvae, provided additional measures of neural activity. Our quantification of network-wide chemoconvulsant drug activity in the whole zebrafish brain illustrates the power of this approach for neuropharmacological profiling in applications ranging from accelerating studies of drug safety and efficacy, to identifying pharmacologically-altered networks in zebrafish models of human neurological disorders.This work was funded by the Biological and Biotechnology Research Council (CASE studentship BB/L502510/1, with AstraZeneca Safety Health and Environment), and by the University of Exeter and AstraZeneca
Goldstini
Supersymmetric phenomenology has been largely bound to the hypothesis that
supersymmetry breaking originates from a single source. In this paper, we relax
this underlying assumption and consider a multiplicity of sectors which
independently break supersymmetry, thus yielding a corresponding multiplicity
of goldstini. While one linear combination of goldstini is eaten via the
super-Higgs mechanism, the orthogonal combinations remain in the spectrum as
physical degrees of freedom. Interestingly, supergravity effects induce a
universal tree-level mass for the goldstini which is exactly twice the
gravitino mass. Since visible sector fields can couple dominantly to the
goldstini rather than the gravitino, this framework allows for substantial
departures from conventional supersymmetric phenomenology. In fact, this even
occurs when a conventional mediation scheme is augmented by additional
supersymmetry breaking sectors which are fully sequestered. We discuss a number
of striking collider signatures, including various novel decay modes for the
lightest observable-sector supersymmetric particle, gravitinoless
gauge-mediated spectra, and events with multiple displaced vertices. We also

Bigger, Better, Faster, More at the LHC
Multijet plus missing energy searches provide universal coverage for theories
that have new colored particles that decay into a dark matter candidate and
jets. These signals appear at the LHC further out on the missing energy tail
than two-to-two scattering indicates. The simplicity of the searches at the LHC
contrasts sharply with the Tevatron where more elaborate searches are necessary
to separate signal from background. The searches presented in this article
effectively distinguish signal from background for any theory where the LSP is
a daughter or granddaughter of the pair-produced colored parent particle

General Gauge and Anomaly Mediated Supersymmetry Breaking in Grand Unified Theories with Vector-Like Particles
In Grand Unified Theories (GUTs) from orbifold and various string
constructions the generic vector-like particles do not need to form complete
SU(5) or SO(10) representations. To realize them concretely, we present
orbifold SU(5) models, orbifold SO(10) models where the gauge symmetry can be
broken down to flipped SU(5) X U(1)_X or Pati-Salam SU(4)_C X SU(2)_L X SU(2)_R
gauge symmetries, and F-theory SU(5) models. Interestingly, these vector-like
particles can be at the TeV-scale so that the lightest CP-even Higgs boson mass
can be lifted, or play the messenger fields in the Gauge Mediated Supersymmetry
Breaking (GMSB). Considering GMSB, ultraviolet insensitive Anomaly Mediated
Supersymmetry Breaking (AMSB), and the deflected AMSB, we study the general
gaugino mass relations and their indices, which are valid from the GUT scale to
the electroweak scale at one loop, in the SU(5) models, the flipped SU(5) X
U(1)_X models, and the Pati-Salam SU(4)_C X SU(2)_L X SU(2)_R models. In the
deflected AMSB, we also define the new indices for the gaugino mass relations,
and calculate them as well. Using these gaugino mass relations and their
indices, we may probe the messenger fields at intermediate scale in the GMSB
and deflected AMSB, determine the supersymmetry breaking mediation mechanisms,

Why do women invest in pre-pregnancy health and care? A qualitative investigation with women attending maternity services
Background Despite the importance attributed to good pre-pregnancy care and its potential to improve pregnancy and child health outcomes, relatively little is known about why women invest in pre-pregnancy health and care. We sought to gain insight into why women invested in pre-pregnancy health and care. Methods We carried out 20 qualitative in-depth interviews with pregnant or recently pregnant women who were drawn from a survey of antenatal clinic attendees in London, UK. Interviewees were purposively sampled to include high and low investors in pre-pregnancy health and care, with variation in age, partnership status, ethnicity and pre-existing medical conditions. Data analysis was conducted using the Framework method. Results We identified three groups in relation to pre-pregnancy health and care: 1) The âpreparedâ group, who had high levels of pregnancy planning and mostly positive attitudes to micronutrient supplementation outside of pregnancy, carried out pre-pregnancy activities such as taking folic acid and making changes to diet and lifestyle. 2) The âpoor knowledgeâ group, who also had high levels of pregnancy planning, did not carry out pre-pregnancy activities and described themselves as having poor knowledge. Elsewhere in their interviews they expressed a strong dislike of micronutrient supplementation. 3) The âabsent pre-pregnancy periodâ group, had the lowest levels of pregnancy planning and also expressed anti-supplement views. Even discussing the pre-pregnancy period with this group was difficult as responses to questions quickly shifted to focus on pregnancy itself. Knowledge of folic acid was poor in all groups. Conclusion Different pre-pregnancy care approaches are likely to be needed for each of the groups. Among the âpreparedâ group, who were proactive and receptive to health messages, greater availability of information and better response from health professionals could improve the range of pre-pregnancy activities carried out. Among the âpoor knowledgeâ group, better response from health professionals might yield greater uptake of pre-pregnancy information. A different, general health strategy might be more appropriate for the âabsent pre-pregnancy periodâ group. Phenomenological Implications of Deflected Mirage Mediation: Comparison with Mirage Mediation
We compare the collider phenomenology of mirage mediation and deflected
mirage mediation, which are two recently proposed "mixed" supersymmetry
breaking scenarios motivated from string compactifications. The scenarios
differ in that deflected mirage mediation includes contributions from gauge
mediation in addition to the contributions from gravity mediation and anomaly
mediation also present in mirage mediation. The threshold effects from gauge
mediation can drastically alter the low energy spectrum from that of pure
mirage mediation models, resulting in some cases in a squeezed gaugino spectrum
and a gluino that is much lighter than other colored superpartners. We provide
several benchmark deflected mirage mediation models and construct model lines
as a function of the gauge mediation contributions, and discuss their discovery

Functional brain imaging using genetically encoded Ca2+ sensors in larval zebrafish is being developed for studying seizures and epilepsy as a more ethical alternative to rodent models. Despite this, few data have been generated on pharmacological mechanisms of action other than GABAA antagonism. Assessing larval responsiveness across multiple mechanisms is vital to test the translational power of this approach, as well as assessing its validity for detecting unwanted drugâinduced seizures and testing antiepileptic drug efficacy.
Experimental Approach
Using lightâsheet imaging, we systematically analysed the responsiveness of 4 days post fertilisation (dpf; which are not considered protected under European animal experiment legislation) transgenic larval zebrafish to treatment with 57 compounds spanning more than 12 drug classes with a link to seizure generation in mammals, alongside eight compounds with no such link.
Key Results
We show 4dpf zebrafish are responsive to a wide range of mechanisms implicated in seizure generation, with cerebellar circuitry activated regardless of the initiating pharmacology. Analysis of functional connectivity revealed compounds targeting cholinergic and monoaminergic reuptake, in particular, showed phenotypic consistency broadly mapping onto what is known about neurotransmitterâspecific circuitry in the larval zebrafish brain. Many seizureâassociated compounds also exhibited altered whole brain functional connectivity compared with controls.
Conclusions and Implications
