Continued investigation of the light element geochemistry of Tagish Lake
We have determined the abundance and isotopic composition of two separate carbonate generations within Tagish Lake. Nitrogen isotope analysis of the chondrite shows it to be organic-rich, with d15N values higher than in CI and CM chondrites
Effects of bovine somatotrophin (bST) on ovarian function in post-partum beef cows
Full text not available. Only the abstract. DOI: 10.1071/RD9960951The effects of bovine somatotrophin (bST) on ovarian follicle development and function and associated gonadotrophin profiles during the first nine weeks post partum were investigated in beef cows. Thirty-two cows (Shorthorn x Galloway) in moderately low body condition (BC) at calving were fed to maintain BC thereafter. At Weeks 2, 4, 6 and 8 post partum, animals were injected with 320 mg bovine somatotrophin (bST) (T, treated; n = 17) or with the carrier oil only (C, control; n = 15). Ovulation occurred in 4 of 17 T cows and 0 of 15 C cows (P = 0.10) by nine week post partum. Treatment with bST did not affect the numbers of small (3-8 mm in diameter) or large (> 8 mm in diameter) follicles or the granulosa cell populations but enhanced the oestradiol (P < 0.05) and insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) content (P < 0.01) of large follicles by nine weeks post partum. It did not significantly affect the testosterone concentrations of large follicles. Circulating concentrations of growth hormone (GH) and IGF-I were higher in T cows than in C cows (P < 0.001) but were unrelated to gonadotrophin profiles or gonadotrophin receptor concentrations in the follicles. At Week 8, plasma insulin concentrations were higher in T cows than in C cows both before (P < 0.05) and after (P < 0.05) glucose injection. It is concluded that GH may play an important role in mediating the effects of nutritional state on ovarian function during the post-partum period, possibly through alteration of intrafollicular IGF-I concentrations
The Molecular Basis of Hereditary Enamel Defects in Humans
The formation of human enamel is highly regulated at the molecular level and involves thousands of genes. Requisites for development of this highly mineralized tissue include cell differentiation; production of a unique extracellular matrix; processing of the extracellular matrix; altering of cell function during different stages of enamel formation; cell movement and attachment; regulation of ion and protein movement; and regulation of hydration, pH, and other conditions of the microenvironment, to name just a few. Not surprising, there is a plethora of hereditary conditions with an enamel phenotype. The objective of this review was to identify the hereditary conditions listed on Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man (OMIM) that have an associated enamel phenotype and whether a causative gene has been identified. The OMIM database was searched with the terms amelogenesis, enamel, dental, and tooth, and all results were screened by 2 individuals to determine if an enamel phenotype was identified. Gene and gene product function was reviewed on OMIM and from publications identified in PubMed. The search strategy revealed 91 conditions listed in OMIM as having an enamel phenotype, and of those, 71 have a known molecular etiology or linked genetic loci. The purported protein function of those conditions with a known genetic basis included enzymes, regulatory proteins, extracellular matrix proteins, transcription factors, and transmembrane proteins. The most common enamel phenotype was a deficient amount of enamel, or enamel hypoplasia, with hypomineralization defects being reported less frequently. Knowing these molecular defects allows an initial cataloging of molecular pathways that lead to hereditary enamel defects in humans. This knowledge provides insight into the diverse molecular pathways involved in enamel formation and can be useful when searching for the genetic etiology of hereditary conditions that involve enamel
Surface and electronic structure of MOCVD-grown Ga(0.92)In(0.08)N investigated by UV and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopies
The surface and electronic structure of MOCVD-grown layers of
Ga(0.92)In(0.08)N have been investigated by means of photoemission. An
additional feature at the valence band edge, which can be ascribed to the
presence of In in the layer, has been revealed. A clean (0001)-(1x1) surface
was prepared by argon ion sputtering and annealing. Stability of chemical
composition of the investigated surface subjected to similar ion etching was
proven by means of X-ray photoemission spectroscopy.Comment: 13 pages, 6 figure
On Heads and Coordination in Valence Acquisition
Abstract. The aim of this paper is to present the design of a partial syntactic annotation of the IPI PAN Corpus of Polish [22] and the cor-responding extension of the corpus search engine Poliqarp [25,12] devel-oped at the Institue of Computer Science PAS and currently employed in Polish and Portuguese corpora projects. In particular, we will argue for the need to distinguish between, and represent both, syntactic and se-mantic heads, and we will sketch the representation of coordination, the area traditionally controversial both in theoretical and in computational linguistics. The annotation is designed in a way intended to maximise the usefulness of the resulting corpus for the task of automatic valence acquisition
