Stresses in the vicinity of an un-reinforced mitre intersection: an experimental and finite element comparison
The experimental investigation reported provides elastic stresses in the vicinity of the unreinforced intersection of a single 90Ā° mitred bend, subjected to an in-plane bending moment. The specimen was extensively strain gauged on the outer surface. A small number of rosettes were also laid on the inside surface close to the welded intersection. The procedures used for the successful installation of the inside surface gauges are discussed. In the experiment, consideration was also given to deflections and rotations. Satisfactory comparisons with adaptive-p thin-shell finite element results were obtained in general and differences are explained in terms of the known experimental variables and finite element approximations. The nature of the stresses at such intersections is discussed and various methods of obtaining fatigue 'hot-spot' stresses are considered
Simultaneous acquisition of tracking data from two stations
A method and apparatus is described for obtaining simultaneous tracking data from two ground stations relative to a spacecraft, and in particular for obtaining two-way range and Doppler measurements with respect to the spacecraft using only one transponder on the spacecraft. The technique employs simultaneous transmission from two stations to produce a return signal with upper and lower sidebands resulting from the interference of the two transmissions. A transponder transmits the upper and lower sidebands centered about a carrier received by both stations. One station tracks the carrier and the other tracks a sideband aided by the carrier
High temperature penetrator assembly with bayonet plug and ramp-activated lock
A penetration apparatus, for very high temperature applications in which a base plug is inserted into an opening through a bulkhead is described. The base plug has a head shape and is seated against the highest temperature surface of the bulkhead, which may be the skin of the nose cone or other part of a space vehicle intended for nondestructive atmospheric reentry. From the second side of the bulkhead at which the less severe environment is extant, a bayonet plug is inserted into the base plug and engages an internal shoulder at about 90 deg rotation. The bayonet plug has an integral flanged portion and a pair of ramping washers which are located between the flange and the second bulkhead surface with a spacing washer as necessary
Apparatus for accurately preloading auger attachment means for frangible protective material
Apparatus for preloading a spring loaded threaded member is described. The apparatus is formed of three telescoping tubes. The innermost tube has means to prevent rotation of the threaded member. The middle tube is threadedly engaged with the threaded member and by axial movement applies a preload thereto. The outer tube engages a nut which may be rotated to retain the threaded member in axial position to maintain the preload
Combinatorial modulus and type of graphs
Let a be the 1-skeleton of a triangulated topological annulus. We
establish bounds on the combinatorial modulus of a refinement , formed by
attaching new vertices and edges to , that depend only on the refinement and
not on the structure of itself. This immediately applies to showing that a
disk triangulation graph may be refined without changing its combinatorial
type, provided the refinement is not too wild. We also explore the type problem
in terms of disk growth, proving a parabolicity condition based on a
superlinear growth rate, which we also prove optimal. We prove our results with
no degree restrictions in both the EEL and VEL settings and examine type
problems for more general complexes and dual graphs.Comment: 24 pages, 12 figure
Resource Guide in Exploring Ethics: A Practical Resource Guide for Tutors and Students
This resource guide will help staff and students who are studying social sciences in hospitality, tourism, entertainment, events, leisure. It outlines the ethical issues that they need to consider when conducting research for their dissertation or for industry-based projects. Social science is a general term used for the study of society, consumers, and employees, the manner in which those people behave and how it affects the world around us. Researching āpeople in our worldā must be completed in a safe, fair and honest way. Whilst ethical policy for empirical research has been with us since the Nuremberg Code 1947, many universities have not yet developed resources in terms of practical ethical examples. This resource guide presents materials and examples for tutors of research methods, and also for undergraduate and masters students engaging in social science research. The Guide also contains background literature, power point presentations and practical examples. All social science research raises many ethical issues. Medical, sport and exercise research dealing with human enhancement, medicine, disease or gene therapy present ethical issues which will NOT be included in this resource guide. Sport and leisure research may include physical or drug-related elements which require students to conform to specific ethical procedures which can be found, in part, in the āEthics and Sportā resource guide available via the HLST website
Market assessment in connection with lighter than air
A review of the marketability of the airship is given, and the relative energy consumption and speed potential of the airship is compared to other modes and guidelines to areas of initial development are also provided, together with a brief historical review
