The variation in pressures in the cockpit fan airplane in flight
The results of an investigation to determine the pressures in the open cockpit of a Vought VE-7 airplane are given. The observed values are small and the effect upon instruments is inconsiderable
The Formation of Ice upon Exposed Parts of an Airplane in Flight
In order to experimentally study the conditions leading to ice formation on aircraft surfaces, an aircraft was equipped with small auxiliary surfaces and aerodynamic shapes similar to struts, wires, Pitot heads, etc. This airplane was flown at an altitude where a temperature of 32 F was encountered, at such times as cloud formations could be found at the coincident altitude. Here it was discovered that ice formed rapidly in regard to quantity, character, shape, and rapidity of formation. An examination of this data, which confirms observations of pilots, indicates that the weight of ice collected can very possibly be sufficient to force the airplane to rapidly lose altitude on account of the increased loads. However, it is more evident that the malformation of the aerodynamic shapes may so increase the drag and reduce the lift so as to produce a loss of altitude even greater in consequence, the combination of the two working in the same direction having a double effect. Other adverse consequences are noted. The recommendation for the guidance of those who must encounter these conditions appears to lie entirely along the lines of avoidance

U.S. commercial electricity consumption
Commercial electricity usage exceeds that of industrial usage and is almost as large as residential electricity consumption in the United States. In this study, regional economic, demographic, and climatic data are used to analyze commercial electricity demand in the United States. Results indicate that total commercial demand for electricity is negatively related to price. In addition, the number of businesses and service income positively affect electricity demand for commercial use. The results are similar for equations estimated for kilowatt-hours demanded per business. The regional dummy variables exhibit different signs, which may occur due to climate factors because warm weather regions experience greater volumes of cooling degree-days, while cool weather regions observe larger amounts of heating degree-days. Although coefficients for the price of natural gas are positive, they do not satisfy the 5-percent significance criterion. The latter suggests that natural gas may not be a substitute good for electricity within the commercial sector of the U.S. economy.Commercial Electricity Consumption; Regional Economics
Regional Evidence regarding U.S. Residential Electricity Consumption
Regional economic, demographic, and climatic data are used to analyze residential electricity demand in the United States. Results indicate that electricity is an inferior good for households in the United States. This confirms earlier research compiled using data for less geographically extensive regional and metropolitan markets. The results imply that demographic growth may place fewer pressures on electricity generation capacity than was previously assumed.Residential Electricity Demand, Regional Economics
Predictors of failed attendances in a multi-specialty outpatient centre using electronic databases.
BACKGROUND: Failure to keep outpatient medical appointments results in inefficiencies and costs. The objective of this study is to show the factors in an existing electronic database that affect failed appointments and to develop a predictive probability model to increase the effectiveness of interventions. METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted on outpatient clinic attendances at Tan Tock Seng Hospital, Singapore from 2000 to 2004. 22864 patients were randomly sampled for analysis. The outcome measure was failed outpatient appointments according to each patient's latest appointment. RESULTS: Failures comprised of 21% of all appointments and 39% when using the patients' latest appointment. Using odds ratios from the mutliple logistic regression analysis, age group (0.75 to 0.84 for groups above 40 years compared to below 20 years), race (1.48 for Malays, 1.61 for Indians compared to Chinese), days from scheduling to appointment (2.38 for more than 21 days compared to less than 7 days), previous failed appointments (1.79 for more than 60% failures and 4.38 for no previous appointments, compared with less than 20% failures), provision of cell phone number (0.10 for providing numbers compared to otherwise) and distance from hospital (1.14 for more than 14 km compared to less than 6 km) were significantly associated with failed appointments. The predicted probability model's diagnostic accuracy to predict failures is more than 80%. CONCLUSION: A few key variables have shown to adequately account for and predict failed appointments using existing electronic databases. These can be used to develop integrative technological solutions in the outpatient clinic
Formalization of Transform Methods using HOL Light
Transform methods, like Laplace and Fourier, are frequently used for
analyzing the dynamical behaviour of engineering and physical systems, based on
their transfer function, and frequency response or the solutions of their
corresponding differential equations. In this paper, we present an ongoing
project, which focuses on the higher-order logic formalization of transform
methods using HOL Light theorem prover. In particular, we present the
motivation of the formalization, which is followed by the related work. Next,
we present the task completed so far while highlighting some of the challenges
faced during the formalization. Finally, we present a roadmap to achieve our
objectives, the current status and the future goals for this project.Comment: 15 Pages, CICM 201
On the General Analytical Solution of the Kinematic Cosserat Equations
Based on a Lie symmetry analysis, we construct a closed form solution to the
kinematic part of the (partial differential) Cosserat equations describing the
mechanical behavior of elastic rods. The solution depends on two arbitrary
analytical vector functions and is analytical everywhere except a certain
domain of the independent variables in which one of the arbitrary vector
functions satisfies a simple explicitly given algebraic relation. As our main
theoretical result, in addition to the construction of the solution, we proof
its generality. Based on this observation, a hybrid semi-analytical solver for
highly viscous two-way coupled fluid-rod problems is developed which allows for
the interactive high-fidelity simulations of flagellated microswimmers as a
result of a substantial reduction of the numerical stiffness.Comment: 14 pages, 3 figure
Influenza vaccination and hospitalisation in Elderly Health Centres.
1. A cohort of Elderly Health Centres was examined to determine whether influenza vaccination decreased hospitalisation and mortality. 2. In the influenza season, influenza vaccination reduced all-cause mortality by half and cardiorespiratory hospitalisation by a quarter. The extent to which influenza vaccination protects older people from serious morbidity and mortality needs to be confirmed in appropriately designed studies, so that scarce health care resources can be used effectivelypublished_or_final_versio
