Refinement and preliminary evaluation of two tablet-based tests of real-world visual function
PURPOSE: To describe, refine, evaluate, and provide normative control data for two freely available tablet-based tests of real-world visual function, using a cohort of young, normally-sighted adults.
METHODS: Fifty young (18-40Â years), normally-sighted adults completed tablet-based assessments of (1) face discrimination and (2) visual search. Each test was performed twice, to assess test-retest repeatability. Post-hoc analyses were performed to determine the number of trials required to obtain stable estimates of performance. Distributions were fitted to the normative data to determine the 99% population-boundary for normally sighted observers. Participants were also asked to rate their comprehension of each test.
RESULTS: Both tests provided stable estimates in around 20 trials (~1-4Â min), with only a further reduction of 14%-17% in the 95% Coefficient of Repeatability (CoR95 ) when an additional 40 trials were included. When using only ~20 trials: median durations for the first run of each test were 191Â s (Faces) and 51Â s (Search); test-retest CoR95 were 0.27Â d (Faces) and 0.84Â s (Search); and normative 99% population-limits were 3.50Â d (Faces) and 3.1Â s (Search). No participants exhibited any difficulties completing either test (100% completion rate), and ratings of task-understanding were high (Faces: 9.6 out of 10; Search: 9.7 out of 10).
CONCLUSIONS: This preliminary assessment indicated that both tablet-based tests are able to provide simple, quick, and easy-to-administer measures of real-world visual function in normally-sighted young adults. Further work is required to assess their accuracy and utility in older people and individuals with visual impairment. Potential applications are discussed, including their use in clinic waiting rooms, and as an objective complement to Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs)
In vitro effect of canine hyperimmune sera on TNFa activity
[Introduction]: Septic shock in dogs is caused by cardiovascular and vasomotor failure associated with an uncontrolled intrinsic release of inflammatory mediators [1–5]. The syndrome is characterized by cardiovascular dysfunction, vascular permeability alterations,
pulmonary oedema and tissue hypoxia resulting from microthrombi which may culminate in disseminated intravascular coagulation and catastrophic multiple organ failure [6,7]. Systemic bacterial infection, particularly by Gram-negative enterobacteria, haemorrhagic trauma, gastric dilation/volvulus and pancreatitis are the major underlying causes leading tosepsis
[8,9]. Because of haemodynamic instability and associated hypovolemia, fluid replacement therapy is generally applied to restore effective circulating volume. The use of fresh frozen plasma has been recommended in cases of coagulopathies as it has been recognized to assist restoration of haemodynamic stability [1,5,10,11]. There is increasing evidence that the drivers of the
haemodynamic instability are inflammatory mediators (particularly TNFa) activated primarily by bacterial endotoxin [3,4,12,13]
The effect of equine hyperimmune sera on TNF alpha activity in a L929 cell bioassay
In this pilot study we examined the effect of sera from a proprietary hyperimmune plasma product (Equiplas) on the activity of TNF: in an in vitro L929 cell bioassay. In brief, we report observations from 2 accessions of sera. Accession 1 describes the antiTNF: activity of 3 hyperimmune sera and an untreated serum sample that were provided blind to the study. Accession 2 reports a comparison of antiTNFalpha activity found in 3 paired hyperimmune sera collected following a multiple endotoxin vaccination regimen

Detection of weak lensing by a cluster of galaxies at z=0.83
We report the detection of weak gravitational lensing of faint, distant
background galaxies by the rich, X-ray luminous cluster of galaxies MS1054-03
at z=0.83. This is the first measurement of weak lensing by a bona fide cluster
at such a high redshift. We detect tangential shear at the 5% - 10% level over
a range of radii 50'' < r < 250'' centered on the optical position of the
cluster. Two-dimensional mass reconstruction using galaxies with 21.5 < I <
25.5 shows a strong peak which coincides with the peak of the smoothed cluster
light distribution. Splitting this sample by magnitude (at I = 23.5) and color
(at R-I = 0.7), we find that the brighter and redder subsamples are only very
weakly distorted, indicating that the faint blue galaxies (FBG's), which
dominate the shear signal, are relatively more distant. The derived cluster
mass is quite sensitive to the N(z) for the FBG's. At one extreme, if all the
FBG's are at z_s = 3, then the mass within a Mpc aperture is \h1 , and the mass-to-light ratio is in solar units. For the derived mass is 70\%
higher and . If follows the no evolution model (in
shape) then , and if all the FBG's lie at z_s\la 1 the
required exceeds . These data provide clear evidence that large,
dense mass concentrations existed at early epochs; that they can be weighed
efficiently by weak lensing observations; and that most of the FBG's are at

Photometric Solutions for Detached Eclipsing Binaries: selection of ideal distance indicators in the SMC
Detached eclipsing binary stars provide a robust one-step distance
determination to nearby galaxies. As a by-product of Galactic microlensing
searches, catalogs of thousands of variable stars including eclipsing binaries
have been produced by the OGLE, MACHO and EROS collaborations. We present
photometric solutions for detached eclipsing binaries in the Small Magellanic
Cloud (SMC) discovered by the OGLE collaboration. The solutions were obtained
with an automated version of the Wilson-Devinney program. By fitting mock
catalogs of eclipsing binaries we find that the normalized stellar radii
(particularly their sum) and the surface brightness ratio are accurately
described by the fitted parameters and estimated standard errors, despite
various systematic uncertainties. In many cases these parameters are well
constrained. In addition we find that systems exhibiting complete eclipses can
be reliably identified where the fractional standard errors in the radii are
small. We present two quantitatively selected sub-samples of eclipsing binaries
that will be excellent distance indicators. These can be used both for
computation of the distance to the SMC and to probe its structure. One
particularly interesting binary has a very well determined solution, exhibits
