    The geometrical multifractality of diffusion-limited aggregation (DLA) clusters is investigated by evaluating the Dq spectrum for qP0 using the standard box-counting technique. Using the cluster points themselves as input to the algorithm, deviations were found from the expected multifractal scaling. However on examining the geometric scaling properties of the cluster perimeter, such deviations were found to be signicantly reduced, thus allowing a reliable Dq spectrum to be calculated.     Chaotic motion in multi-black hole spacetimes and holographic screens

    We investigate the geodesic motion in D−D-dimensional Majumdar-Papapetrou multi-black hole spacetimes and find that the qualitative features of the D=4 case are shared by the higher dimensional configurations. The motion of timelike and null particles is chaotic, the phase space being divided into basins of attraction which are separated by a fractal boundary, with a fractal dimension dBd_B. The mapping of the geodesic trajectories on a screen placed in the asymptotic region is also investigated. We find that the fractal properties of the phase space induces a fractal structure on the holographic screen, with a fractal dimension dB−1d_B-1.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figure

    The origins of multifractality in financial time series and the effect of extreme events

    This paper presents the results of multifractal testing of two sets of financial data: daily data of the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) index and minutely data of the Euro Stoxx 50 index. Where multifractal scaling is found, the spectrum of scaling exponents is calculated via Multifractal Detrended Fluctuation Analysis. In both cases, further investigations reveal that the temporal correlations in the data are a more significant source of the multifractal scaling than are the distributions of the returns. It is also shown that the extreme events which make up the heavy tails of the distribution of the Euro Stoxx 50 log returns distort the scaling in the data set. The most extreme events are inimical to the scaling regime. This result is in contrast to previous findings that extreme events contribute to multifractality

    Advanced Metal Foam Structures for Outer Space

    A document discusses a proposal to use advanced materials especially bulk metallic glass (BMG) foams in structural components of spacecraft, lunar habitats, and the like. BMG foams, which are already used on Earth in some consumer products, are superior to conventional metal foams: BMG foams have exceptionally low mass densities and high strength-to-weight ratios and are more readily processable into strong, lightweight objects of various sizes and shapes. These and other attractive properties of BMG foams would be exploited, according to the proposal, to enable in situ processing of BMG foams for erecting and repairing panels, shells, containers, and other objects. The in situ processing could include (1) generation of BMG foams inside prefabricated deployable skins that would define the sizes and shapes of the objects thus formed and (2) thermoplastic deformation of BMG foams. Typically, the generation of BMG foams would involve mixtures of precursor chemicals that would be subjected to suitable pressure and temperature schedules. In addition to serving as structural components, objects containing or consisting of BMG foams could perform such functions as thermal management, shielding against radiation, and shielding against hypervelocity impacts of micrometeors and small debris particles

The method involves consolidating metallic glass powder blended with blowing agent particulates to produce expandable precursors, capable of yielding foams with porosities as high as 86%. The foams are found to inherit the strength of the parent metallic glass and to be able to deform heavily toward full densification absorbing high amounts of energy

    High Throughput siRNA Screening Identifies Phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase Class II Alpha as Important for Production of Human Cytomegalovirus Virions.

    High throughput siRNA screening is a useful methodology to identify cellular factors required for virus replication. Here we utilized a high throughput siRNA screen based on detection of a viral antigen by microscopy to interrogate cellular protein kinases and phosphatases for their importance during human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) replication, and identified the Class II Phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase PI3K-C2A as being involved in HCMV replication. Confirming this observation, infected cells treated with either pooled or individual siRNAs targeting PI3K-C2A mRNA produced approximately 10-fold less infectious virus compared to controls. Western blotting and quantitative PCR analysis of infected cells treated with siRNAs indicated that depletion of PI3K-C2A slightly reduced accumulation of late, but not immediate-early or early, viral antigens and had no appreciable effect of viral DNA synthesis. Analysis of siRNA treated cells by electron microscopy and western blotting indicated that PI3K-C2A was not required for production of viral capsids, but did lead to increased numbers of enveloped capsids in the cytoplasm that had undergone secondary envelopment and reduction of viral particles exiting the cell. Therefore, PI3K-C2A is a factor important for HCMV replication and has a role in production of HCMV virions. IMPORTANCE: There is limited information about the cellular factors required for human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) replication. Therefore, to identify proteins involved in HCMV replication we developed a methodology to conduct a high throughput siRNA screen in HCMV infected cells. From our screening data we focused our studies on the top "hit" from our screen, the lipid kinase phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase Class II Alpha (PI3K-C2A), as its role in HCMV replication was unknown. Interestingly, we found that PI3K-C2A is important for the production of HCMV virions and is involved in virion production after secondary envelopment of viral capsids, the encapsidation of HCMV capsids by a lipid bilayer that occurs before virions exit the cell
