    Optimal control of a leaking qubit

    Physical implementations of quantum bits can contain coherent transitions to energetically close non-qubit states. In particular, for anharmonic oscillator systems such as the superconducting phase qubit and the transmon a two-level approximation is insufficient. We apply optimal control theory to the envelope of a resonant Rabi pulse in a qubit in the presence of a single, weakly off-resonant leakage level. The gate error of a spin flip operation reduces by orders of magnitude compared to simple pulse shapes. Near-perfect gates can be achieved for any pulse duration longer than an intrinsic limit given by the nonlinearity. The pulses can be understood as composite sequences that refocus the leakage transition. We also discuss ways to improve the pulse shapes.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure

    Structural investigations on ϵ\epsilon-FeGe at high pressure and low temperature

    The structural parameters of ϵ\epsilon-FeGe have been determined at ambient conditions using single crystal refinement. Powder diffraction have been carried out to determine structural properties and compressibility for pressures up to 30 GPa and temperatures as low as 82 K. The discontinuous change in the pressure dependence of the shortest Fe-Ge interatomic distance might be interpreted as a symmetry-conserving transition and seems to be related to a magnetic phase boundary line.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure

    Quasifree pion photoproduction on the deuteron in the Δ\Delta region

    Photo production of pions on the deuteron is studied in the spectator nucleon model. The Born terms of the elementary production amplitude are determined in pseudovector π\piN coupling and supplied with a form factor. The Δ\Delta resonance is considered both in the ss and the uu channel. The parameters of the Δ\Delta resonance and the cutoff of the form factors are fixed on the leading photoproduction multipoles. Results for total and differential cross sections are compared with experimental data. Particular attention is paid to the role of Pauli correlations of the final state nucleons in the quasifree case.     Stabilized High Power Laser for Advanced Gravitational Wave Detectors

    Second generation gravitational wave detectors require high power lasers with several 100W of output power and with very low temporal and spatial fluctuations. In this paper we discuss possible setups to achieve high laser power and describe a 200W prestabilized laser system (PSL). The PSL noise requirements for advanced gravitational wave detectors will be discussed in general and the stabilization scheme proposed for the Advanced LIGO PSL will be described. Special emphasis will be given to the most demanding power stabilization requiremets and new results (RIN ≤ 4×10-9/surdHz) will be presented

    Unitarity constraint for threshold coherent pion photoproduction on the deuteron and chiral perturbation theory

    The contribution of the two-step process gamma + d -> p + n -> pi0 + d to the imaginary part of the amplitude for coherent pion production on the deuteron is calculated exploiting unitarity constraints. The result shows that this absorptive process is not negligible and has to be considered in an extraction of the elementary neutron production amplitude from the gamma + d -> pi0 + d cross section at threshold. In addition, it is argued that a consistent calculation of gamma + d -> pi0 + d in baryon chiral perturbation theory beyond next-to-leading order requires the inclusion of this absorptive process.Comment: 11 pages revtex including 2 postscript figure

    Analysis and test of low profile aluminum aerospace tank dome

    In order to increase the structural performance of cryogenic tanks, the aerospace industry is beginning to employ low-profile bulkheads in new generation launch vehicle designs. This report details the analysis and test of one such dome made from 2219 aluminum. Such domes have two potential failure modes under internal pressure, general tensile failure and hoop compression buckling (in regions near the equator). The test determined the buckling load and ultimate tensile load of the hardware and showed that both compared well with the analysis predictions. This effort was conducted under the auspices of NASA and the General Dynamics Cryogenic Tank Technology Program (CTTP)
