Correlation between In Vivo and In Vitro Efficacy of Antimicrobial Agents against Foreign Body Infections
Implant-associated infections are often resistant to antibiotic therapy. Routine sensitivity tests fail to predict therapeutic success. Therefore experimental in vitro tests were sought that would better correlate with drug efficacy in device-related infections. The activity of six different antibiotics against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus epidermidis was investigated. In vivo studies were performed with the guinea pig tissue-cage animal model; in vitro studies with minimum inhibiting and bactericidal concentrations, time-kill studies of growing and stationary-phase microorganisms, the killing of glass-adherent S. epidermidis. Drug efficacy on stationary and adherent microorganisms, but not minimum inhibiting concentrations, predicted the outcome of device-related infections. Rifampin cured 12 of 12 infections and was also the most efficient drug in any experimental in vitro test. Similarly, the failure of ciproftoxacin to eradicate foreign body infections correlated with its low efficacy on stationary-phase and adherent S. epidermidi
Fatigue in long-duration travel diaries
This paper introduces a new long-duration travel diary survey undertaken in a small town and rural environment, which complements the existing urban Mobidrive survey of 1999. Policy-making is dominated by the 1-day view of the world provided by the usual diaries. Long-duration surveys can balance this by highlighting the strong intrapersonal variance in choices, modes used and other aspects of travel behaviour. They also allow us to gain an understanding of the activity space of the travellers. The new 2003 Thurgau data followed the protocol of the earlier study, but developed the set of questions further. These new questions concerned the social context of respondents as well as trip-related items, such as planning horizon of the activity, previous frequency of visits or the groups involved in the trip or activity. The descriptive and model-based analysis of the data showed that respondent fatigue is not an issue in either survey. Where significant deviations from a steady number of reported trips were found, they showed positive tendencies, i.e. learning. The skill accrued in the intensive round of contacts between respondent and interviewer is significant. Papers on travel diaries tend not to report interviewer effects, although their impacts are clearly discernable. The analysis shows that the four interviewers employed in this survey had a substantial effect on the number of reported trip
Irreversible reorganization in a supercooled liquid originates from localised soft modes
The transition of a fluid to a rigid glass upon cooling is a common route of
transformation from liquid to solid that embodies the most poorly understood
features of both phases1,2,3. From the liquid perspective, the puzzle is to
understand stress relaxation in the disordered state. From the perspective of
solids, the challenge is to extend our description of structure and its
mechanical consequences to materials without long range order. Using computer
simulations, we show that the localized low frequency normal modes of a
configuration in a supercooled liquid are causally correlated to the
irreversible structural reorganization of the particles within that
configuration. We also demonstrate that the spatial distribution of these soft
local modes can persist in spite of significant particle reorganization. The
consequence of these two results is that it is now feasible to construct a
theory of relaxation length scales in glass-forming liquids without recourse to
dynamics and to explicitly relate molecular properties to their collective

On the relationship between structure and dynamics in a supercooled liquid
We present the dynamic propensity distribution as an explicit measure of the
degree to which the dynamics in a liquid over the time scale of structural
relaxation is determined by the initial configuration. We then examine, for a
binary mixture of soft discs in two dimensions, the correlation between the
spatial distribution of propensity and that of two localmeasures of
configuration structure: the local composition and local free volume. While the
small particles dominate the high propensity population,we find no strong
correlation between either the local composition or the local free volume and
the propensity. It is argued that this is a generic failure of purely local
structural measures to capture the inherently non-local character of collective

High-quality lowest-frequency normal mode strain observations at the Black Forest Observatory (SW-Germany) and comparison with horizontal broad-band seismometer data and synthetics
We present spectra concentrating on the lowest-frequency normal modes of the Earth obtained from records of the invar-wire strainmeters and STS-1 broad-band seismometers located in the Black Forest Observatory, Germany after the disastrous earthquakes off the NW coast of Sumatra in 2004 and off the coast near Tohoku, Japan in 2011. We compare the spectra to ones obtained from synthetic seismograms computed using a mode summation technique for an anelastic, elliptical, rotating, spherically symmetric Earth model. The synthetics include strain–strain-coupling effects by using coupling coefficients obtained from comparisons between Earth tide signals recorded by the strainmeters and synthetic tidal records. We show that for the low-frequency toroidal and spheroidal modes up to 1 mHz, the strainmeters produce better signal-to-noise ratios than the broad-band horizontal seismometers. Overall, the comparison with the synthetics is satisfactory but not as good as for vertical accelerations. In particular, we demonstrate the high quality of the strainmeter data by showing the Coriolis splitting of toroidal modes for the first time in individual records, the first clear observation of the singlet 2S0/1 and the detection of the fundamental radial mode 0S0 with good signal-to-noise ratio and with a strain amplitude of 10^−11. We also identify the latter mode in a record of the Isabella strainmeter after the great Chilean quake in 1960, the detection of which was missed by the original studies
