    Resolving the virial discrepancy in clusters of galaxies with modified Newtonian dynamics

    A sample of 197 X-ray emitting clusters of galaxies is considered in the context of Milgrom's modified Newtonian dynamics (MOND). It is shown that the gas mass, extrapolated via an assumed β\beta model to a fixed radius of 3 Mpc, is correlated with the gas temperature as predicted by MOND (MgT2M_g \propto T^2). The observed temperatures are generally consistent with the inferred mass of hot gas; no substantial quantity of additional unseen matter is required in the context of MOND. However, modified dynamics cannot resolve the strong lensing discrepancy in those clusters where this phenomenon occurs.     Comment on "Quantum Monte Carlo Evidence for Superconductivity in the Three-Band Hubbard Model in Two Dimensions"

    In a recent Letter, Kuroki and Aoki [Phys. Rev. Lett. 76, 440 (1996)] presented quantum Monte-Carlo (QMC) results for pairing correlations in the three-band Hubbard model, which describes the Cu-d_{x^2-y^2} and O-p_{x,y} orbitals present in the CuO_2 planes of high-T_c materials. In this comment we argue that (i) the used parameter set is not appropriate for the description of high-T_c materials since it does not satisfy the minimal requirement of a charge-transfer gap at half-filling, and (ii) the observed increase in the d_{x^2-y^2} channel is dominantly produced by the pair-field correlations without the vertex part.     A 2 component X-ray spectrum from SMC X-1

    Both HEAO-1 A2 and Einstein SSS observations of SMC X-1 are presented. An unpulsed soft component is found with a blackbody temperature of 0.16 keV and an area for the emission region of 10 to the 15th power sq cm to 10 to the 17th power sq cm. The hard X-ray component is pulsed; the phase averaged spectrum is a power law with alpha approximately 0.5 keV up to 17 keV above which it steepens. The SSS sets an upper limit of 4 x 10 to the 21st power H cm/2 to any absorption and is consistent with that expected from the wind of SK160. Absorption dips with a timescale of several hundred seconds are seen immediately following an eclipse exit and are probably caused by inhomogeneities in the wind of SK160

    A semiweekly sampling program at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography pier was begun in 1983 during an El Nino event. Microplankton data for March to November 1983 show a temporal sequence of species assemblages of the 24 important taxa, with a residence time of 1 to 4 weeks. From March to early September, the assemblages consisted of typical neritic taxa. From mid-September to mid-November, the presence of oceanic warm-wave species was associated with positive temperature anomalies characteristic of the El Nino condition.     A New Algorithm for Computing Statistics of Weak Lensing by Large-Scale Structure

    We describe an efficient algorithm for calculating the statistics of weak lensing by large-scale structure based on a tiled set of independent particle-mesh N-body simulations which telescope in resolution along the line of sight. This efficiency allows us to predict not only the mean properties of lensing observables such as the power spectrum, skewness and kurtosis of the convergence, but also their sampling errors for finite fields of view, which are themselves crucial for assessing the cosmological significance of observations. We find that the nongaussianity of the distribution substantially increases the sampling errors for the skewness and kurtosis in the several to tens of arcminutes regime, whereas those for the power spectrum are only fractionally increased even out to wavenumbers where shot noise from the intrinsic ellipticities of the galaxies will likely dominate the errors.Comment: 12 pages, 13 figures; minor changes reflect accepted versio

    We investigate excitation energies of hyperbolically deformed S = 1 spin chains, which are specified by the local energy scale f_j^{~} = \cosh j \lambda, where j is the lattice index and \lambda is the deformation parameter. The elementary excitation is well described by a quasiparticle hopping model, which is also expressed in the form of hyperbolic deformation. It is possible to estimate the excitation gap \Delta in the uniform limit \lambda \rightarrow 0, by means of a finite size scaling with respect to the system size N and the deformation parameter \lambda.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
