A modified Holzapfel-Ogden law for a residually stressed finite strain model of the human left ventricle in diastole
In this work, we introduce a modified Holzapfel-Ogden hyperelastic constitutive model for ventricular myocardium that accounts for residual stresses, and we investigate the effects of residual stresses in diastole using a magnetic resonance imaging–derived model of the human left ventricle (LV). We adopt an invariant-based constitutive modelling approach and treat the left ventricular myocardium as a non-homogeneous, fibre-reinforced, incompressible material. Because in vivo images provide the configuration of the LV in a loaded state even in diastole, an inverse analysis is used to determine the corresponding unloaded reference configuration. The residual stress in this unloaded state is estimated by two different methods. One is based on three-dimensional strain measurements in a local region of the canine LV, and the other uses the opening angle method for a cylindrical tube. We find that including residual stress in the model changes the stress distributions across the myocardium and that whereas both methods yield qualitatively similar changes, there are quantitative differences between the two approaches. Although the effects of residual stresses are relatively small in diastole, the model can be extended to explore the full impact of residual stress on LV mechanical behaviour for the whole cardiac cycle as more experimental data become available. In addition, although not considered here, residual stresses may also play a larger role in models that account for tissue growth and remodelling
Thermodynamics of the spin-flop transition in a quantum XYZ chain
A special limit of an antiferromagnetic XYZ chain was recently shown to
exhibit interesting bulk as well as surface spin-flop transitions at T=0. Here
we provide a complete calculation of the thermodynamics of the bulk transition
using a transfer-matrix-renormalization-group (TMRG) method that addresses
directly the thermodynamic limit of quantum spin chains. We also shed some
light on certain spinwave anomalies at low temperature predicted earlier by

Secure Communications in Millimeter Wave Ad Hoc Networks
Wireless networks with directional antennas, like
millimeter wave (mmWave) networks, have enhanced security.
For a large-scale mmWave ad hoc network in which eavesdroppers are randomly located, however, eavesdroppers can still intercept the confidential messages, since they may reside in the signal beam. This paper explores the potential of physical layer security in mmWave ad hoc networks. Specifically, we characterize the impact of mmWave channel characteristics, random blockages, and antenna gains on the secrecy performance. For the special case of uniform linear array (ULA), a tractable approach is proposed to evaluate the average achievable secrecy rate. We also characterize the impact of artificial noise in such networks. Our results reveal that in the low transmit power regime, the use of low mmWave frequency achieves better secrecy performance, and when increasing transmit power, a transition from low mmWave frequency to high mmWave frequency is demanded for obtaining a higher secrecy rate. More antennas at the transmitting nodes are needed to decrease the antenna gain obtained by the eavesdroppers when using ULA. Eavesdroppers can intercept more information by using a wide beam pattern. Furthermore, the use of artificial noise may be ineffective forenhancing the secrecy rate
Site multiplicity of rare earth ions in III-nitrides
This presentation reviews recent lattice location studies of RE ions in GaN by electron emission channelling (EC) and X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) techniques. These studies agree that RE ions at low concentrations (whether they are incorporated during growth or introduced later by ion implantation) predominantly occupy Ga substitutional sites, as expected from considerations of charge equivalence. We combine this result with some examples of the welldocumented richness of optical spectra of GaN:RE3+ to suggest that the luminescence of these materials may be ascribed to a family of rather similar sites, all of which feature the REGa defect
The Price of Anarchy for Selfish Ring Routing is Two
We analyze the network congestion game with atomic players, asymmetric
strategies, and the maximum latency among all players as social cost. This
important social cost function is much less understood than the average
latency. We show that the price of anarchy is at most two, when the network is
a ring and the link latencies are linear. Our bound is tight. This is the first

Occurrence and risk assessment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in soil from the Tiefa coal mine district, Liaoning, China.
In order to evaluate soil-associated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) pollution from coal mine activities in Tiefa coal mine, Northeast China, 16 PAHs identified as priority pollutants by US Environmental Pollution Agency were determined in mining zone soil (MZS), agricultural soil (AS), local lake bank soil (LBS), a vertical soil profile and three coal gangue samples. The total concentration of 16 PAHs (defined as Σ(16)PAH, dry weight) in surface soil ranged from 5.1 to 5642.3 ng g(-1), with an arithmetic mean of 1118.3 ng g(-1). Σ(16)PAH values at the sites from MZS are significantly higher than those found in AS and LBS. The vertical distribution of PAHs indicated that these compounds can penetrate the deeper layers of the soil, especially the low-rings compounds. A complex of petrogenic origin and pyrolytic sources was found within the study area, as suggested by the isomeric ratios of PAHs. According to principal component analysis (PCA), four factors were identified in the source contribution, including coal combustion, unburned coal particulates, coal gangue and vehicular emissions. The degree of contamination and the PAH toxicity assessment suggested that the soils of the study area have been seriously polluted and pose a high potential health risk.</span
Social mix in central post-reform Shanghai
Social mix can be observed in many post-reform Chinese cities, yet the topic
has so far remained scarcely researched. Using central Shanghai as a focus,
this research asks how socially mixed neighbourhoods have emerged, what is
their internal structure, and how have locally-based social interactions been
affected by the emergence of social mix.
Based on a neighbourhood of 5 housing estates and other relevant examples,
this study shows that mixed neighbourhoods have emerged from an unplanned
and uncoordinated interplay among new market-driven commodity housing
developments, counter-market retention mechanisms on traditional estates,
government-led socially-orientated housing projects, residents’ resistance to
redevelopment, and the lingering socialist legacy of welfare housing and
unclear property rights. Significant differences were found in residents’ socioeconomic
attributes, living conditions, tenure and housing expenditure between
the traditional, new middle-income, and new upmarket housing.
The process of housing redevelopment and the creation of social mix have
diminished locally-based social interactions. Residents’ intra-estate interaction
is the strongest in traditional estates, lower in the middle-income estate and
minimal in upmarket estates. The level of inter-estate interaction in the mixed
neighbourhood is weak. The emergence of social mix has brought about a
divergence in lifestyles and lifeworlds among the changed set of residents,
which is reflected in the spheres of mobility, residential stability, shopping, and
children’s education. The level of inter-estate interaction has reduced from the
past when the neighbourhood was more socially homogenous.
Findings suggest that social mix and a weakening of local social interaction will
likely continue, and these will demand more scrutiny considering China’s
development agenda on social harmony. Findings here concur with Western
studies on mixed communities that social mix does not lead to social mixing.
New policies and programmes to foster social interaction should be explored
Onymity promotes cooperation in social dilemma experiments
One of the most elusive scientific challenges for over 150 years has been to explain why cooperation survives despite being a seemingly inferior strategy from an evolutionary point of view. Over the years, various theoretical scenarios aimed at solving the evolutionary puzzle of cooperation have been proposed, eventually identifying several cooperation-promoting mechanisms: kin selection, direct reciprocity, indirect reciprocity, network reciprocity, and group selection. We report the results of repeated Prisoner’s Dilemma experiments with anonymous and onymous pairwise interactions among individuals. We find that onymity significantly increases the frequency of cooperation and the median payoff per round relative to anonymity. Furthermore, we also show that the correlation between players’ ranks and the usage of strategies (cooperation, defection, or punishment) underwent a fundamental shift, whereby more prosocial actions are rewarded with a better ranking under onymity. Our findings prove that reducing anonymity is a valid promoter of cooperation, leading to higher payoffs for cooperators and thus suppressing an incentive—anonymity—that would ultimately favor defection
