The Analysis of Vocational Aptitude Changing with Age
The assumption that vocational aptitude changed with age and with the kind of occupation was examined from the tendency of the fitted curve for the score of the aptitude test. 9 vocational aptitudes were measured by the general vocational aptitude test by Japan Labor Ministry. Subjects were 382 male workers (design engineers, turners, welders, can manufacturing workers, and crane operators) of from 20 to 59 years old, and 348 male and female students (junior high school, vocational school, and university) of from 15 to 19 years old. The design engineers' aptitudes advanced along the quadratic curve until 31 years old, but almost all the aptitudes of the other workers fell along the linear curve with age. The design engineers preserved various aptitudes until 52 years old, the turners 44, and the welders, the can manufacturing workers, and the crane
operators 37. The students' aptitudes were equal to those of the workers of from 15 to 25 years old. The workers preserved Spatial aptitude and Numerical aptitude until 45 years old. This could be said in all the occupations here.
Further it was made clear from the micromotion study that the influence of age was caused by therblig
Total vascular resistance, augmentation index, and augmentation pressure increase in patients with peripheral artery disease
Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is one of major vascular diseases which frequently coexists with coronary arterial disease and cerebrovascular disease. The patients with PAD have a poor prognosis when it progresses. A new blood pressure testing device enables to simultaneously measure brachial blood pressure (BP), central BP, and several vascular parameters, with easy and non-invasive, in a short time. Here, we aimed to evaluate these arterial stiffness parameters in patients with PAD. In this study, 243 consecutive patients who were suspected of having PAD and referred to our hospital from September 2016 to June 2019, were registered. Several parameters, such as brachial BP, central BP, aortic pulse wave velocity (aPWV), total vascular resistance (TVR), augmentation index (AI) and augmentation pressure (AP), were determined by Mobil-O-Graph. Ankle-brachial pressure index (ABI) was used to define PAD (ABI <= 0.9 as PAD). The relationship between PAD and central BP, aPWV, TVR, AI, or AP were investigated. One hundred sixty-two patients (67%) were categorized as the PAD group and 81 patients (33%) as the non-PAD group. In the PAD group, the systolic brachial BP and central systolic BP were significantly higher than those in the non-PAD group (138 +/- 24 mmHg vs 131 +/- 19 mmHg, P < .05, 125 +/- 22 mmHg vs 119 +/- 18 mmHg, P < .05, respectively). TVR, AI, and AP were significantly higher in the PAD group (1785 +/- 379 dyn s/cm(5) vs 1661 +/- 317 dyn s/cm(5), P < .05, 26.2 +/- 13.0% vs 22.2 +/- 13.3%, P < .05, 13.5 +/- 9.4 mmHg vs 10.7 +/- 7.2 mmHg, P < .05, respectively). No significant differences in diastolic BP, central diastolic BP, and aPWV were found between the groups. Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that PAD was significantly associated with TVR, AI, and AP (P < .05, respectively). TVR/AP/AI were significantly higher in the PAD group than in the non-PAD group
Orexin A Enhances Pro-Opiomelanocortin Transcription Regulated by BMP-4 in Mouse Corticotrope AtT20 Cells
Orexin is expressed mainly in the hypothalamus and is known to activate the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis that is involved in various stress responses and its resilience. However, the effects of orexin on the endocrine function of pituitary corticotrope cells remain unclear. In this study, we investigated the roles of orexin A in pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC) transcription using mouse corticotrope AtT20 cells, focusing on the bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) system expressed in the pituitary. Regarding the receptors for orexin, type 2 (OXR2) rather than type 1 (OX1R) receptor mRNA was predominantly expressed in AtT20 cells. It was found that orexin A treatment enhanced POMC expression, induced by corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) stimulation through upregulation of CRH receptor type-1 (CRHR1). Orexin A had no direct effect on the POMC transcription suppressed by BMP-4 treatment, whereas it suppressed Smad1/5/9 phosphorylation and Id-1 mRNA expression induced by BMP-4. It was further revealed that orexin A had no significant effect on the expression levels of type I and II BMP receptors but upregulated inhibitory Smad6/7 mRNA and protein levels in AtT20 cells. The results demonstrated that orexin A upregulated CRHR signaling and downregulated BMP-Smad signaling, leading to an enhancement of POMC transcription by corticotrope cells
Contribution of renal angiotensin II type I receptor to gene expressions in hypertension-induced renal injury
Contribution of renal angiotensin II type I receptor to gene expressions in hypertension-induced renal injury. Recent evidence indicates that transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1) plays an important role in renal fibrosis via stimulation of extracellular matrix synthesis. The present study was undertaken to investigate the role of angiotensin II type I receptor (AT1 receptor) in hypertension-induced renal injury. Twenty-two-week-old stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRSP), which had established hypertension and moderate renal damage, were orally given TCV-116, a selective non-peptide AT1 receptor antagonist (0.1, 1 or 10 mg/kg/day), enalapril (10 mg/kg/day) or vehicle once a day for 10 weeks. At the end point of the treatment, we examined renal function, the gene expressions of TGF-β1 and extracellular matrix components in the interstitium [collagen types I (COI) and III (COIII), fibronectin (FN)] and the basement membrane (COIV and laminin), and renal microscopic morphology in rats aged 32 weeks. In vehicle-treated 32 week-old SHRSP with renal dysfunction and nephrosclerosis, renal mRNA levels for TGF-β1, COI, COIII, FN, COIV were all several-fold higher than in WKY. Thus, renal TGF-β1 gene expression was enhanced in SHRSP, which may contribute to the increased renal expressions of COI, COIII, FN, COIV in SHRSP. Treatment with TCV-116 (0.1 mg/kg/day) in SHRSP, in spite of no reduction of blood pressure, decreased renal mRNA levels for TGF-β1, COI, COIII, FN, COIV, being accompanied by the significant decrease in urinary protein and albumin excretion, blood urea nitrogen and plasma creatinine. Treatment with TCV-116 (10 mg/kg/day) in SHRSP decreased mRNAs for TGF-β1, COI, COIII, FN and COIV to almost the same levels as WKY, being associated with normalization of urinary protein and albumin excretion and the prevention of nephrosclerosis, as judged by microscopic histological observations. On the other hand, the effects of enalapril (10 mg/kg/day) on the above mentioned mRNA levels, renal function and renal morphology were weaker than those of TCV-116 (10 mg/kg/day) and were as much as TCV-116 (1 mg/kg/day). These results suggest that independently of hypotensive action, AT1 receptor antagonist has a potent renal protective effect by inhibiting the gene expression of renal TGF-β1 and extracellular matrix components
L-Ascorbate Biosynthesis Involves Carbon Skeleton Rearrangement in the Nematode Caenorhabditis elegans
Ascorbate (AsA) is required as a cofactor and is widely distributed in plants and animals. Recently, it has been suggested that the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans also synthesizes AsA. However, its biosynthetic pathway is still unknown. To further understand AsA biosynthesis in C. elegans, we analyzed the incorporation of the 13C atom into AsA using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) in worms fed with D-Glc (1-13C)-labeled Escherichia coli. GC-MS analysis revealed that AsA biosynthesis in C. elegans, similarly to that in mammalian systems, involves carbon skeleton rearrangement. The addition of L-gulono-1,4-lactone, an AsA precursor in the mammalian pathway, significantly increased AsA level in C. elegans, whereas the addition of L-galactono-1,4-lactone, an AsA precursor in the plant and Euglena pathway, did not affect AsA level. The suppression of E03H4.3 (an ortholog of gluconolactonase) or the deficiency of F54D5.12 (an ortholog of L-gulono-1,4-lactone oxidase) significantly decreased AsA level in C. elegans. Although N2- and AsA-deficient F54D5.12 knockout mutant worm (tm6671) morphologies and the ratio of collagen to non-collagen protein did not show any significant differences, the mutant worms exhibited increased malondialdehyde levels and reduced lifespan compared with the N2 worms. In conclusion, our findings indicate that the AsA biosynthetic pathway is similar in C. elegans and mammals
Near-infrared and Mid-infrared Spectroscopy with the Infrared Camera (IRC) for AKARI
The Infrared Camera (IRC) is one of the two instruments on board the AKARI
satellite. In addition to deep imaging from 1.8-26.5um for the pointed
observation mode of the AKARI, it has a spectroscopic capability in its
spectral range. By replacing the imaging filters by transmission-type
dispersers on the filter wheels, it provides low-resolution (lambda/d_lambda ~
20-120) spectroscopy with slits or in a wide imaging field-of-view
(approximately 10'X10'). The IRC spectroscopic mode is unique in space infrared
missions in that it has the capability to perform sensitive wide-field
spectroscopic surveys in the near- and mid-infrared wavelength ranges. This
paper describes specifications of the IRC spectrograph and its in-orbit
performance.Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication on PAS
Optical Properties of (162173) 1999 JU3: In Preparation for the JAXA Hayabusa 2 Sample Return Mission
We investigated the magnitude-phase relation of (162173) 1999 JU3, a target
asteroid for the JAXA Hayabusa 2 sample return mission. We initially employed
the international Astronomical Union's H-G formalism but found that it fits
less well using a single set of parameters. To improve the inadequate fit, we
employed two photometric functions, the Shevchenko and Hapke functions. With
the Shevchenko function, we found that the magnitude-phase relation exhibits
linear behavior in a wide phase angle range (alpha = 5-75 deg) and shows weak
nonlinear opposition brightening at alpha< 5 deg, providing a more reliable
absolute magnitude of Hv = 19.25 +- 0.03. The phase slope (0.039 +- 0.001
mag/deg) and opposition effect amplitude (parameterized by the ratio of
intensity at alpha=0.3 deg to that at alpha=5 deg, I(0.3)/I(5)=1.31+-0.05) are
consistent with those of typical C-type asteroids. We also attempted to
determine the parameters for the Hapke model, which are applicable for
constructing the surface reflectance map with the Hayabusa 2 onboard cameras.
Although we could not constrain the full set of Hapke parameters, we obtained
possible values, w=0.041, g=-0.38, B0=1.43, and h=0.050, assuming a surface
roughness parameter theta=20 deg. By combining our photometric study with a
thermal model of the asteroid (Mueller et al. in preparation), we obtained a
geometric albedo of pv = 0.047 +- 0.003, phase integral q = 0.32 +- 0.03, and
Bond albedo AB = 0.014 +- 0.002, which are commensurate with the values for
common C-type asteroids.Comment: 27 pages, 4 figure, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical
