    Sustainability and Corporate Social Responsibility in the Perspective of Social Economy Entities: A Bibliometric Study

    We start from the conceptual interconnection between Sustainability and Corporate Social Responsibility, which, although continuously subject to controversy, both within the scope of its definition and in its performance, advocate, as the ultimate goal, human development and of the society in general, promoting the interests of the Communities on a permanent, long-term basis and without compromising the options of the future generations. In this context, we cannot fail to draw a parallel with the entities that constitute the Social Economy Sector. The activities they carry out are of economic and social nature and must be pursued in the general interest of their members, users and beneficiaries, thus in the general interest of the Community. These institutions also reveal concerns about the sustainability in all the dimensions involved (economic, social and environmental), in which the organizational performance is particularly important, as it becomes imperative to guarantee their continuity, fostering and promoting their social action. We will, therefore, start by framing what is meant by Sustainability, Corporate Social Responsibility and Social Economy, with a particular focus on the current requirements of stakeholders regarding the socially responsible behaviour of the institutions as these, in turn, will entail the adoption of more comprehensive management tools, also more efficient and transparent concerning all dimensions (economic, financial and social). It is within this framework that a project called “TFA—TheoFrameAccountability—Theoretical framework for the promotion of accountability in the social economy sector: The IPSS case” emerges, being promoted by the University of Aveiro, with the participation of National Confederation of Solidarity Institutions (CNIS—acronym in Portuguese), and the Polytechnic Institutes of Coimbra and Porto. This project aims to promote the accountability of the social economy sector (economic, financial and social aspects), in the Private Social Solidarity Institutions (IPSS—acronym in Portuguese), assisting them not only in fulfilling their legal obligations, but also facilitating the reporting of results of activities carried out in a more effective manner and promoting transfer of knowledge (for the IPSS and also for the academic community), thus contributing to the development and sustainability of these institutions. Thus, we develop an exploratory and descriptive analysis, of a quantitative-qualitative nature, in which the procedures of data collection determine the result of the search strategy by the defined descriptors. For this purpose, the analysis will focus on the following variables: number of articles published per year; methodologies used; theories of support; identification by sector/area of activity; countries of origin; more representative institutions; authors who publish more and journals with the largest number of publications. The main results indicate a growing concern about sustainability and a growing publication in this area.     Asteroseismology and Interferometry

    Asteroseismology provides us with a unique opportunity to improve our understanding of stellar structure and evolution. Recent developments, including the first systematic studies of solar-like pulsators, have boosted the impact of this field of research within Astrophysics and have led to a significant increase in the size of the research community. In the present paper we start by reviewing the basic observational and theoretical properties of classical and solar-like pulsators and present results from some of the most recent and outstanding studies of these stars. We centre our review on those classes of pulsators for which interferometric studies are expected to provide a significant input. We discuss current limitations to asteroseismic studies, including difficulties in mode identification and in the accurate determination of global parameters of pulsating stars, and, after a brief review of those aspects of interferometry that are most relevant in this context, anticipate how interferometric observations may contribute to overcome these limitations. Moreover, we present results of recent pilot studies of pulsating stars involving both asteroseismic and interferometric constraints and look into the future, summarizing ongoing efforts concerning the development of future instruments and satellite missions which are expected to have an impact in this field of research.Comment: Version as published in The Astronomy and Astrophysics Review, Volume 14, Issue 3-4, pp. 217-36

    A nested-PCR with an Internal Amplification Control for the detection and differentiation of Bartonella henselae and B. clarridgeiae: An examination of cats in Trinidad

    BACKGROUND: Bartonella species are bacterial blood parasites of animals capable of causing disease in both animals and man. Cat-Scratch Disease (CSD) in humans is caused mainly by Bartonella henselae and is acquired from the cat, which serves as a reservoir for the bacteria. A second species, B. clarridgeiae is also implicated in the disease. Diagnosis of Bartonellosis by culture requires a week or more of incubation on enriched media containing blood, and recovery is often complicated by faster growing contaminating bacteria and fungi. PCR has been explored as an alternative to culture for both the detection and species identification of Bartonella, however sensitivity problems have been reported and false negative reactions due to blood inhibitors have not generally been addressed in test design. METHODS: A novel, nested-PCR was designed for the detection of Bartonella henselae and B. clarridgeiae based on the strategy of targeting species-specific size differences in the 16S-23S rDNA intergenic regions. An Internal Amplification Control was used for detecting PCR inhibition. The nested-PCR was utilized in a study on 103 blood samples from pet and stray cats in Trinidad. RESULTS: None of the samples were positive by primary PCR, but the Nested-PCR detected Bartonella in 32/103 (31%) cats where 16 were infected with only B. henselae, 13 with only B. clarridgeiae and 3 with both species. Of 22 stray cats housed at an animal shelter, 13 (59%) were positive for either or both species, supporting the reported increased incidence of Bartonella among feral cats. CONCLUSION: The usefulness of a single PCR for the detection of Bartonella henselae and B. clarridgeiae in the blood of cats is questionable. A nested-PCR offers increased sensitivity over a primary PCR and should be evaluated with currently used methods for the routine detection and speciation of Bartonella henselae and B. clarridgeiae. In Trinidad, B. henselae and B. clarridgeiae are the predominant species in cats and infection appears highest with stray cats, however B. clarridgeiae may be present at levels similar to that of B. henselae in the pet population

    Influence of Ketotifen, Cromolyn Sodium, and Compound 48/80 on the survival rates after intestinal ischemia reperfusion injury in rats

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Mast cells were associated with intestinal ischemia-reperfusion injury, the study was to observe the influence of Ketotifen, Cromolyn Sdium(CS), and Compound 48/80(CP) on the survival rates on the third day after intestinal ischemia-reperfusion injury in rats.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>120 healthy Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into 5 groups, Sham-operated group (group S), model group (group M), group K, group C and group CP. Intestinal damage was triggered by clamping the superior mesenteric artery for 75 minutes, group K, C, and CP were treated with kotifen 1 mg·kg<sup>-1</sup>, CS 50 mg·kg<sup>-1</sup>, and CP 0.75 mg·kg<sup>-1 </sup>i.v. at 5 min before reperfusion and once daily for three days following reperfusion respectively. Survival rate in each group was recorded during the three days after reperfusion. All the surviving rats were killed for determining the concentration of serum glutamic-oxaloacetic transaminase(AST), glutamic pyruvic transaminase(ALT), the ratio of AST compare ALT(S/L), total protein(TP), albumin(ALB), globulin(GLB), the ratio of ALB compare GLB(A/G), phosphocreatine kinase(CK), lactate dehydrogenase(LDH), urea nitrogen(BUN) and creatinine(CRE) at the 3<sup>rd </sup>day after reperfusion. And ultrastructure of IMMC, Chiu's score, lung histology, IMMC counts, the levels of TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6 and IL-10 of the small intestine were detected at the same time.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Intestinal ischemia-reperfusion injury reduced the survival rate. The concentrations of TP, ALB and level of IL-10 in intestine in group M decreased significantly while the concentrations of S/L, LDH and the levels of IL-6 and TNF-α in intestine increased significantly compared with group S (<it>P </it>< 0.05). Treatment with Ketotifen and CS increased the survival rate compared with group M (<it>P </it>< 0.05), attenuated the down-regulation or up-regulation of the above index (<it>P </it>< 0.05). Treatment with CP decreased the survival rate on the 3<sup>rd </sup>day after reperfusion compared with group M(<it>P </it>< 0.05). Group K and C had better morphology in IMMC in the small intestine and in the lungs than in group M and CP, although the Chiu's score and IMMC counts remained the same in the five groups(<it>P </it>> 0.05).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Mast cell inhibition after ischemia prior to reperfusion and following reperfusion may decrease the multi-organ injury induced by intestine ischemia reperfusion, and increase the survival rates.</p
