    Plot/SurfW: Plotting Utility for EDGE2D Output

    This report describes a utility that was developed to display EDGE2D results. The utility is focused on results that relate to impurity density, velocity, and particle fluxes in the SOL and divertor. Due to the complicated nature of 2D impurity sources, the concentration of the thermal force near the separatrix and near the divertor entrance, the impurity flow pattern and impurity densities are not necessarily easy to visualize. Thus, we wanted a utility that allowed simple and quick visualization of the impurity behavior. In order to achieve this we overlaid the divertor hardware for plots inside the divertor and we expanded the appearance of the main chamber SOL by plotting distance along the field lines vs. SOL depth with the density (or velocity or flux or other quantity) the false colour. Also, we allowed for the plotted variable to be a function of the other EDGE2D result variables. _________________________________________________

    Targeting lentiviral vectors to antigen-specific immunoglobulins

    Gene transfer into B cells by lentivectors can provide an alternative approach to managing B lymphocyte malignancies and autoreactive B cell-mediated autoimmune diseases. These pathogenic B cell Populations can be distinguished by their surface expression of monospecific immunoglobulin. Development of a novel vector system to deliver genes to these specific B cells could improve the safety and efficacy of gene therapy. We have developed an efficient rnethod to target lentivectors to monospecific immunoglobulin-expressing cells in vitro and hi vivo. We were able to incorporate a model antigen CD20 and a fusogenic protein derived from the Sindbis virus as two distinct molecules into the lentiviral Surface. This engineered vector could specifically bind to cells expressing Surface immunoglobulin recognizing CD20 (αCD20), resulting in efficient transduction of target cells in a cognate antigen-dependent manner in vitro, and in vivo in a xenografted tumor model. Tumor suppression was observed in vivo, using the engineered lentivector to deliver a suicide gene to a xenografted tumor expressing αCD20. These results show the feasibility of engineering lentivectors to target immunoglobulin-specific cells to deliver a therapeutic effect.     Interference between the halves of a double-well trap containing a Bose-Einstein condensate is studied. It is found that when the atoms in the two wells are initially in the coherent state, the intensity exhibits collapses and revivals, but it does not for the initial Fock states. Whether the initial states are in the coherent states or in a Fock states, the fidelity time has nothing to do with collision. We point out that interference and its fidelity can be adjusted experimentally by properly preparing the number and initial states of the system.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures, accepted by Phy. rev.

    Probing Kaluza-Klein Dark Matter with Neutrino Telescopes

    In models in which all of the Standard Model fields live in extra universal dimensions, the lightest Kaluza-Klein (KK) particle can be stable. Calculations of the one-loop radiative corrections to the masses of the KK modes suggest that the identity of the lightest KK particle (LKP) is mostly the first KK excitation of the hypercharge gauge boson. This LKP is a viable dark matter candidate with an ideal present-day relic abundance if its mass is moderately large, between 600 to 1200 GeV. Such weakly interacting dark matter particles are expected to become gravitationally trapped in large bodies, such as the Sun, and annihilate into neutrinos or other particles that decay into neutrinos. We calculate the annihilation rate, neutrino flux and the resulting event rate in present and future neutrino telescopes. The relatively large mass implies that the neutrino energy spectrum is expected to be well above the energy threshold of AMANDA and IceCube.     High Order Multistep Methods with Improved Phase-Lag Characteristics for the Integration of the Schr\"odinger Equation

    In this work we introduce a new family of twelve-step linear multistep methods for the integration of the Schr\"odinger equation. The new methods are constructed by adopting a new methodology which improves the phase lag characteristics by vanishing both the phase lag function and its first derivatives at a specific frequency. This results in decreasing the sensitivity of the integration method on the estimated frequency of the problem. The efficiency of the new family of methods is proved via error analysis and numerical applications.Comment: 36 pages, 6 figure

    Human Amygdala Sensitivity to the Pupil Size of Others

    Stimulation of the amygdala produces pupil dilation in animal and human subjects. The present study examined whether the amygdala is sensitive to variations in the pupil size of others. Male subjects underwent event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging while passively viewing unfamiliar female faces whose pupils were either unaltered (natural variations in large and small pupils) or altered to be larger or smaller than their original size. Results revealed that the right amygdala and left amygdala/substantia innominata were sensitive to the pupil size of others, exhibiting increased activity for faces with relatively large pupils. Upon debrief, no subject reported being aware that the pupils had been manipulated. These results suggest a function for the amygdala in the detection of changes in pupil size, an index of arousal and/or interest on the part of a conspecific, even in the absence of explicit knowledge
