Enigma of ultraluminous X-ray sources may be resolved by 3D-spectroscopy (MPFS data)
The ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) were isolated in external galaxies for
the last 5 years. Their X-ray luminosities exceed 100-10000 times those of
brightest Milky Way black hole binaries and they are extremely variable. There
are two models for the ULXs, the best black hole candidates. 1. They are
supercritical accretion disks around a stellar mass black hole like that in
SS433, observed close to the disk axes. 2. They are Intermediate Mass Black
Holes (of 100-10000 solar masses). Critical observations which may throw light
upon the ULXs nature come from observations of nebulae around the ULXs. We
present results of 3D-spectroscopy of nebulae around several ULXs located in
galaxies at 3-6 Mpc distances. We found that the nebulae to be powered by their
central black holes. The nebulae are shocked and dynamically perturbed probably

Experimentally testing and assessing the predictive power of species assembly rules for tropical canopy ants.
Understanding how species assemble into communities is a key goal in ecology. However, assembly rules are rarely tested experimentally, and their ability to shape real communities is poorly known. We surveyed a diverse community of epiphyte-dwelling ants and found that similar-sized species co-occurred less often than expected. Laboratory experiments demonstrated that invasion was discouraged by the presence of similarly sized resident species. The size difference for which invasion was less likely was the same as that for which wild species exhibited reduced co-occurrence. Finally we explored whether our experimentally derived assembly rules could simulate realistic communities. Communities simulated using size-based species assembly exhibited diversities closer to wild communities than those simulated using size-independent assembly, with results being sensitive to the combination of rules employed. Aggregate tensile strength and friability characteristics of furrow and sprinkler irrigated fields in Southern Idaho
Agricultural crops grown in southern Idaho are furrow or sprinkler irrigated. Therefore, the soil experiences several wetting and drying cycles each growing season that can contribute to changes in aggregate tensile strength and friability. The objective of the research was to evaluate the influence of irrigation on soil structural properties. Four furrow irrigated fields were sampled at the top and bottom of the field, in the furrow and on the bed location of the furrow. Five sprinkler irrigated fields were sampled at 0-5 and 5-15 cm depth and at the top and bottom of the field. Results from this study indicate that differences in tensile strength in furrow irrigated fields were only evident soon after irrigation; otherwise, there were few differences in tensile strength and friability. In sprinkler irrigated fields tensile strength increased with depth in 3 of the 5 fields measured.Friability was less affected by depth
Detection of antibacterial activity of essential oil components by TLC-bioautography using luminescent bacteria
The aim of the present study was the chemical characterization of some medically relevant essential oils (tea tree, clove, cinnamon bark, thyme and eucalyptus) and the investigation of antibacterial effect of the components of these oils by use of a direct bioautographic method. Thin layer chromatography (TLC) was combined with biological detection in this process. The chemical composition of the oils was determined by gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Eucalyptol (84.2%) was the main component of the essential oil of eucalyptus, eugenol (83.7%) of clove oil, and trans-cinnamic aldehyde (73.2%), thymol (49.9%) and terpinen-4-ol (45.8%) of cinnamon bark, thyme and tea tree oils, respectively. Antibacterial activity of the separated components of these oils, as well as their pure main components (eucalyptol, eugenol, trans-cinnamic aldehyde and thymol) was observed against the Gram-negative luminescence tagged plant pathogenic bacterium Pseudomonas syringae pv. maculicola (Psmlux) and the Gram-negative, naturally luminescent marine bacterium Vibrio fischeri. On the whole, the antibacterial activity of the essential oils could be related to their main components, but the minor constituents may be involved in this process. Trans-cinnamic aldehyde and eugenol were the most active compounds in TLC-bioautography.
The sensitivity of TLC-bioautographic method can be improved with using luminescent test bacteria. This method is more cost-effective and provides more reliable results in comparison with conventional microbiological methods, e.g. disc-diffusion technique
A Precise Measurement of the Weak Mixing Angle in Neutrino-Nucleon Scattering
We report a precise measurement of the weak mixing angle from the ratio of
neutral current to charged current inclusive cross-sections in deep-inelastic
neutrino-nucleon scattering. The data were gathered at the CCFR neutrino
detector in the Fermilab quadrupole-triplet neutrino beam, with neutrino

Multiwavelength Studies of Young OB Associations
We discuss how contemporary multiwavelength observations of young
OB-dominated clusters address long-standing astrophysical questions: Do
clusters form rapidly or slowly with an age spread? When do clusters expand and
disperse to constitute the field star population? Do rich clusters form by
amalgamation of smaller subclusters? What is the pattern and duration of
cluster formation in massive star forming regions (MSFRs)? Past observational
difficulties in obtaining good stellar censuses of MSFRs have been alleviated
in recent studies that combine X-ray and infrared surveys to obtain rich,
though still incomplete, censuses of young stars in MSFRs. We describe here one
of these efforts, the MYStIX project, that produced a catalog of 31,784
probable members of 20 MSFRs. We find that age spread within clusters are real
in the sense that the stars in the core formed after the cluster halo. Cluster
expansion is seen in the ensemble of (sub)clusters, and older dispersing
populations are found across MSFRs. Direct evidence for subcluster merging is
still unconvincing. Long-lived, asynchronous star formation is pervasive across

Colonialism, postcolonialism and the liberal welfare state
This article addresses the colonial and racial origins of the welfare state with a particular emphasis on the liberal welfare state of the USA and UK. Both are understood in terms of the centrality of the commodified status of labour power expressing a logic of market relations. In contrast, we argue that with a proper understanding of the relations of capitalism and colonialism, the sale of labour power as a commodity already represents a movement away from the commodified form of labour represented by enslavement. European colonialism is integral to the development of welfare states and their forms of inclusion and exclusion which remain racialised through into the twenty-first century
Gauge and Scheme Dependence of Mixing Matrix Renormalization
We revisit the issue of mixing matrix renormalization in theories that
include Dirac or Majorana fermions. We show how a gauge-variant on-shell
renormalized mixing matrix can be related to a manifestly gauge-independent one
within a generalized scheme of renormalization. This
scheme-dependent relation is a consequence of the fact that in any scheme of
renormalization, the gauge-dependent part of the mixing-matrix counterterm is
ultra-violet safe and has a pure dispersive form. Employing the unitarity
properties of the theory, we can successfully utilize the afore-mentioned
scheme-dependent relation to preserve basic global or local symmetries of the
bare Lagrangian through the entire process of renormalization. As an immediate
application of our study, we derive the gauge-independent renormalization-group
equations of mixing matrices in a minimal extension of the Standard Model with
