Establishment of a room temperature molten salt capability to measure fundamental thermodynamic properties of actinide elements
This is the final report of a six-month, Laboratory Directed Research and Development (LDRD) project at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). The goal of this work was to establish a capability for the measurement of fundamental thermodynamic properties of actinide elements in room temperature molten salts. This capability will be used to study in detail the actinide chloro- and oxo-coordination chemistries that dominate in the chloride-based molten salt media. Uranium will be the first actinide element under investigation
Personality predictors of levels of forgiveness two and a half years after the transgression
The aim of the present study was to explore whether the domains and facets of the five-factor model of personality predicted motivational states for avoidance and revenge following a transgression at a second temporal point distant from the original transgression. A sample of 438 university students, who reported experiencing a serious transgression against them, completed measures of avoidance and revenge motivations around the transgression and five-factor personality domains and facets at time 1, and measures of avoidance and revenge motivations two and a half years later. The findings suggest that neuroticism, and specifically anger hostility, predicts revenge and avoidance motivation
Fuzzy Rings in D6-Branes and Magnetic Field Background
We use the Myers T-dual nonabelin Born-Infeld action to find some new
nontrivial solutions for the branes in the background of D6-branes and Melvin
magnetic tube field. In the D6-Branes background we can find both of the fuzzy
sphere and fuzzy ring solutions, which are formed by the gravitational
dielectric effect. We see that the fuzzy ring solution has less energy then
that of the fuzzy sphere. Therefore the fuzzy sphere will decay to the fuzzy
ring configuration. In the Melvin magnetic tube field background there does not
exist fuzzy sphere while the fuzzy ring configuration may be formed by the
magnetic dielectric effect. The new solution shows that propagating in
the D6-branes and magnetic tube field background may expand into a rotating
fuzzy ring. We also use the Dirac-Born-Infeld action to construct the ring

Exact Diagonalization of Two Quantum Models for the Damped Harmonic Oscillator
The damped harmonic oscillator is a workhorse for the study of dissipation in
quantum mechanics. However, despite its simplicity, this system has given rise
to some approximations whose validity and relation to more refined descriptions
deserve a thorough investigation. In this work, we apply a method that allows
us to diagonalize exactly the dissipative Hamiltonians that are frequently
adopted in the literature. Using this method we derive the conditions of
validity of the rotating-wave approximation (RWA) and show how this approximate
description relates to more general ones. We also show that the existence of
dissipative coherent states is intimately related to the RWA. Finally, through
the evaluation of the dynamics of the damped oscillator, we notice an important
property of the dissipative model that has not been properly accounted for in
previous works; namely, the necessity of new constraints to the application of

Double Inflation in Supergravity and the Large Scale Structure
The cosmological implication of a double inflation model with hybrid + new
inflations in supergravity is studied. The hybrid inflation drives an inflaton
for new inflation close to the origin through supergravity effects and new
inflation naturally occurs. If the total e-fold number of new inflation is
smaller than , both inflations produce cosmologically relevant density
fluctuations. Both cluster abundances and galaxy distributions provide strong
constraints on the parameters in the double inflation model assuming
standard cold dark matter scenario. The future satellite
experiments to measure the angular power spectrum of the cosmic microwave
background will make a precise determination of the model parameters possible.Comment: 19 pages (RevTeX file
Is cosmology consistent?
We perform a detailed analysis of the latest CMB measurements (including
BOOMERaNG, DASI, Maxima and CBI), both alone and jointly with other
cosmological data sets involving, e.g., galaxy clustering and the Lyman Alpha
Forest. We first address the question of whether the CMB data are internally
consistent once calibration and beam uncertainties are taken into account,
performing a series of statistical tests. With a few minor caveats, our answer
is yes, and we compress all data into a single set of 24 bandpowers with
associated covariance matrix and window functions. We then compute joint
constraints on the 11 parameters of the ``standard'' adiabatic inflationary
cosmological model. Out best fit model passes a series of physical consistency
checks and agrees with essentially all currently available cosmological data.
In addition to sharp constraints on the cosmic matter budget in good agreement
with those of the BOOMERaNG, DASI and Maxima teams, we obtain a heaviest
neutrino mass range 0.04-4.2 eV and the sharpest constraints to date on gravity
waves which (together with preference for a slight red-tilt) favors

Suppressing CMB Quadrupole with a Bounce from Contracting Phase to Inflation
Recent released WMAP data show a low value of quadrupole in the CMB
temperature fluctuations, which confirms the early observations by COBE. In
this paper, a scenario, in which a contracting phase is followed by an
inflationary phase, is constructed. We calculate the perturbation spectrum and
show that this scenario can provide a reasonable explanation for lower CMB
anisotropies on large angular scales.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
Limits to the muon flux from WIMP annihilation in the center of the Earth with the AMANDA detector
A search for nearly vertical up-going muon-neutrinos from neutralino
annihilations in the center of the Earth has been performed with the AMANDA-B10
neutrino detector. The data sample collected in 130.1 days of live-time in
1997, ~10^9 events, has been analyzed for this search. No excess over the
expected atmospheric neutrino background is oberved. An upper limit at 90%
confidence level on the annihilation rate of neutralinos in the center of the
Earth is obtained as a function of the neutralino mass in the range 100
GeV-5000 GeV, as well as the corresponding muon flux limit.Comment: 14 pages, 11 figures. Version accepted for publication in Physical
