How ready is China for a China-style world order? China's state media discourse under construction
What exactly is the China-style world order that Chinese officials and intellectual elites have recently been talking about, and how ready is China for it? An examination and analysis of discourses on ‘Africa Live’ on CCTV Africa, the first overseas news center of China Central Television (CCTV), yields some highly noticeable features and significant themes, confirming that although China has shifted from a low-profile approach to a more assertive one, in an attempt to change the global order, its verbal challenge and sometimes harsh criticism of the American-led international system is accompanied by an obvious absence of a clear vision of what the new world order should be like. This lack of a clear vision may be due to the fact that the Chinese discourse on world order is still a work in progress, constrained by internal practices, and Africa is its testing ground for the construction of a discourse that China envisages as an alternative
S_3 Symmetry and Neutrino Masses and Mixings
Based on a universal seesaw mass matrix model with three scalars \phi_i, and
by assuming an S_3 flavor symmetry for the Yukawa interactions, the lepton
masses and mixings are investigated systematically. In order to understand the
observed neutrino mixing, the charged leptons (e, \mu, \tau) are regarded as
the 3 elements (e_1, e_2, e_3) of S_3, while the neutrino mass-eigenstates are
regarded as the irreducible representation (\nu_\eta, \nu_\sigma, \nu_\pi) of
S_3, where (\nu_\pi, \nu_\eta) and \nu_\sigma are a doublet and a singlet,
respectively, which are composed of the 3 elements (\nu_1, \nu_2, \nu_3) of
S_3.Comment: 16 pages, no figure, version to appear in EPJ-
Angular Distributions of Drell-Yan Lepton Pairs at the Tevatron: Order Corrections and Monte Carlo Studies
We investigate the angular distribution of the lepton pair in the process , where the
virtual photon is produced at high transverse momentum. The angular
distribution of the leptons is very sensitive to possible nonperturbative
effects, such as a nontrivial vacuum structure of QCD, and offers a good chance
to test such effects. We present complete calculations
of the decay lepton distributions in the lepton pair rest frame. An order
Monte Carlo study of the lepton angular distributions,
with acceptance cuts and energy resolution smearing applied to the leptons, is
also presented.Comment: 26 pages (Revtex) plus 9 (uuencoded) postscript figures available as

Machine Learning in Automated Text Categorization
The automated categorization (or classification) of texts into predefined
categories has witnessed a booming interest in the last ten years, due to the
increased availability of documents in digital form and the ensuing need to
organize them. In the research community the dominant approach to this problem
is based on machine learning techniques: a general inductive process
automatically builds a classifier by learning, from a set of preclassified
documents, the characteristics of the categories. The advantages of this
approach over the knowledge engineering approach (consisting in the manual
definition of a classifier by domain experts) are a very good effectiveness,
considerable savings in terms of expert manpower, and straightforward
portability to different domains. This survey discusses the main approaches to
text categorization that fall within the machine learning paradigm. We will
discuss in detail issues pertaining to three different problems, namely
document representation, classifier construction, and classifier evaluation.Comment: Accepted for publication on ACM Computing Survey
The 3-3-1 model with S_4 flavor symmetry
We construct a 3-3-1 model based on family symmetry S_4 responsible for the
neutrino and quark masses. The tribimaximal neutrino mixing and the diagonal
quark mixing have been obtained. The new lepton charge \mathcal{L} related to
the ordinary lepton charge L and a SU(3) charge by L=2/\sqrt{3} T_8+\mathcal{L}
and the lepton parity P_l=(-)^L known as a residual symmetry of L have been
introduced which provide insights in this kind of model. The expected vacuum
alignments resulting in potential minimization can origin from appropriate
violation terms of S_4 and \mathcal{L}. The smallness of seesaw contributions
can be explained from the existence of such terms too. If P_l is not broken by
the vacuum values of the scalar fields, there is no mixing between the exotic
and the ordinary quarks at the tree level.Comment: 20 pages, revised versio
Constraining Running Non-Gaussianity
The primordial non-Gaussian parameter fNL has been shown to be
scale-dependent in several models of inflation with a variable speed of sound.
Starting from a simple ansatz for a scale-dependent amplitude of the primordial
curvature bispectrum for two common phenomenological models of primordial
non-Gaussianity, we perform a Fisher matrix analysis of the bispectra of the
temperature and polarization of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) radiation
and derive the expected constraints on the parameter nNG that quantifies the
running of fNL(k) for current and future CMB missions such as WMAP, Planck and
CMBPol. We find that CMB information alone, in the event of a significant
detection of the non-Gaussian component, corresponding to fNL = 50 for the
local model and fNL = 100 for the equilateral model of non-Gaussianity, is able
to determine nNG with a 1-sigma uncertainty of Delta nNG = 0.1 and Delta nNG =
0.3, respectively, for the Planck mission. In addition, we consider a Fisher
matrix analysis of the galaxy power spectrum to determine the expected
constraints on the running parameter nNG for the local model and of the galaxy
bispectrum for the equilateral model from future photometric and spectroscopic
surveys. We find that, in both cases, large-scale structure observations should
achieve results comparable to or even better than those from the CMB, while
showing some complementarity due to the different distribution of the
non-Gaussian signal over the relevant range of scales. Finally, we compare our
findings to the predictions on the amplitude and running of non-Gaussianity of
DBI inflation, showing how the constraints on a scale-dependent fNL(k)
translate into constraints on the parameter space of the theory.Comment: 37 pages, 14 figure
Langerhans cell histiocytosis (histiocytosis X)
There has been a renewed interest in Langerhans cell histiocytosis in recent years due both to advances in basic research and to improvements in diagnostic and treatment approaches. In this article, we review the various aspects of the disease and the potential implications of these recent scientific researches for our understanding and management of the disorder.published_or_final_versio

Search for gravitational waves from Scorpius X-1 in the second Advanced LIGO observing run with an improved hidden Markov model
We present results from a semicoherent search for continuous gravitational waves from the low-mass x-ray binary Scorpius X-1, using a hidden Markov model (HMM) to track spin wandering. This search improves on previous HMM-based searches of LIGO data by using an improved frequency domain matched filter, the J-statistic, and by analyzing data from Advanced LIGO's second observing run. In the frequency range searched, from 60 to 650 Hz, we find no evidence of gravitational radiation. At 194.6 Hz, the most sensitive search frequency, we report an upper limit on gravitational wave strain (at 95% confidence) of h095%=3.47×10-25 when marginalizing over source inclination angle. This is the most sensitive search for Scorpius X-1, to date, that is specifically designed to be robust in the presence of spin wandering. © 2019 American Physical Society
