    Summary of Physics Prospects for Polarized Nucleon-Nucleon Scattering at HERA-N

    The physics scope of polarized nucleon-nucleon collisions originating from an internal polarized target in the HERA proton beam is summarized. Based on 240 pb^{-1} integrated luminosity at 40 GeV c.m. energy, statistical sensitivities are given over a wide (x_F, p_T)-range for a variety of inclusive and exclusive final states. By measuring single spin asymmetries unique information can be obtained on higher twist contributions and their p_T-dependence. From double spin asymmetries in both photon and J/psi production it appears possible to measure the polarized gluon distribution in the range 0.1 < x_{gluon} < 0.4 with a good statistical accuracy. Drell-Yan pair production asymmetries in doubly longitudinal mode, measurable in the mass range 3-10 GeV, allow discrimination between different parametrizations of the polarized light sea quark distributions. In doubly transverse mode access to the quark transversity distribution might become possible.     Transfer molding of PMR-15 polyimide resin

    Transfer molding is an economically viable method of producing small shapes of PMR-15 polyimide. It is shown that with regard to flexural, compressive, and tribological properties transfer-molded PMR-15 polyimide is essentially equivalent to PMR-15 polyimide produced by the more common method of compression molding. Minor variations in anisotropy are predictable effects of molding design and secondary finishing operations

    Orientation and temperature dependence of domain wall properties in FePt

    An investigation of the orientation and temperature dependence of domain wall properties in FePt is presented. The authors use a microscopic, atomic model for the magnetic interactions within an effective, classical spin Hamiltonian constructed on the basis of spin-density functional calculations. They find a significant dependence of the domain wall width as well as the domain wall energy on the orientation of the wall with respect to the crystal lattice. Investigating the temperature dependence, they demonstrate the existence of elliptical domain walls in FePt at room temperature. The consequences of their findings for a micromagnetic continuum theory are discussed. (c) 2007 American Institute of Physics

    On a Possibility to Determine the Sign of the Polarized Gluon Distribution

    We investigate the possibility to draw conclusions on the sign of the spin-dependent gluon distribution, ΔG(x,Q2)\Delta G(x, Q^2), from existing polarized DIS data. The spin-dependent parton distributions Δuv,Δdv,Δuˉ,Δdˉ,Δs\Delta u_v, \Delta d_v, \Delta {\bar u}, \Delta {\bar d}, \Delta {s}, and ΔG\Delta G are constructed in the framework of a phenomenological procedure taking into account some assumptions on signs of valence and sea parton distributions motivated by 't Hooft's mechanism of quark-quark interaction induced by instantons. The axial gluon anomaly and data on integral quark contributions to the proton spin, Δu~,Δd~\Delta \tilde u, \Delta \tilde d, and Δs~\Delta \tilde s, are also taken into account. Predictions for the xx- and Q2Q^2-dependencies of the polarized proton and neutron structure functions, g1pg_1^p and g1ng_1^n, are compared to experimental data. It is shown that the neutron structure function, g1ng_1^n, is especially sensitive to the sign of ΔG(x,Q2)\Delta G(x, Q^2). The results of our analysis supports the conclusion that this sign should be positive.Comment: 14 pages, latex, 12 figure

    Laser induced magnetization switching in films with perpendicular anisotropy: a comparison between measurements and a multi-macrospin model

    Thermally-assisted ultra-fast magnetization reversal in a DC magnetic field for magnetic multilayer thin films with perpendicular anisotropy has been investigated in the time domain using femtosecond laser heating. The experiment is set-up as an optically pumped stroboscopic Time Resolved Magneto-Optical Kerr Effect magnetometer. It is observed that a modest laser fluence of about 0.3 mJ/square-cm induces switching of the magnetization in an applied field much less than the DC coercivity (0.8 T) on the sub-nanosecond time-scale. This switching was thermally-assisted by the energy from the femtosecond pump-pulse. The experimental results are compared with a model based on the Landau Lifschitz Bloch equation. The comparison supports a description of the reversal process as an ultra-fast demagnetization and partial recovery followed by slower thermally activated switching due to the spin system remaining at an elevated temperature after the heating pulse.Comment: 8 pages, 10 figures, to be submitted to PR
