The Impact of After School Remediation Programs on Student Achievement
The purpose of this research was to identify key elements of after school remediation programs which impact student learning and increase student achievement as measured by standardized test scores. The goal of this research was to discover the essential components of effective after school programs, compare these findings to our current local after school program, and make recommendations for future improvement of after school remediation programs in our local school division. The research began with a review of literature concerning best practices for developing effective after school programs. After the key elements of effective after school programs were examined, the research findings were compared to current practices in my local elementary school. Benchmark test data of students who attended the after school remediation program in the 2010-2011 school year were examined and compared to end of the year standardized test scores in math and reading in order to measure the impact of the local after school program on student achievement. Finally, the information from the research was used along with the test data to make recommendations for improving the local after school remediation program
Foundations for Memorials and Monuments on the National Mall
As the western end of the National Mall in Washington, DC was made by filling in portions of the Potomac River, memorials and monuments have required deep foundations. The site history including stream channels, canals, and materials used in filling various areas has had a large impact on the development of the Mall. Variations in geologic conditions along the Mall have affected the types of foundations used. One of the earliest structures, the Washington Monument, was sited to account for problem soils. Its foundation was underpinned during construction to compensate for low-strength soils. Shallow-founded portions of the Lincoln Memorial, the Reflecting Pool, and the Jefferson Memorial have experienced settlements requiring repair. Foundations for the Korean, Vietnam, and World War II Memorials were designed as deep systems due to the presence of compressible deposits at their respective sites and in the case of the World War II Memorial the presence of a flood zone. The US Capitol is founded at a higher elevation on spread footings bearing on compact Pleistocene terrace deposits. This paper will the present the types of foundations used for memorials and monuments, the performance of the systems, and the resulting remedial actions where required

Multicolor Photometry of the Uranus Irregular Satellites Sycorax and Caliban
We report on accurate BVRI photometry for the two Uranus irregular satellites
Sycorax and Caliban. We derive colours, showing that
Sycorax is bluer than Caliban. Our data allows us to detect a significant
variability in the Caliban's light-curve, which suggests an estimated period of
about 3 hours. Despite it is the brighter of the two bodies, Sycorax does not
display a strong statistically significant variability. However our data seem
to suggest a period of about 4 hoursComment: 17 pages, 2 eps figures, in press in Astronomical Journa
MODELING ADVERTISING CARRYOVER IN FLUID MILK: COMPARISON OF ALTERNATIVE LAG SPECIFICATIONS
The performance of restricted estimators such as Almon and Shiller in modeling advertising carryover is tested and compared to the unrestricted OLS estimator, using 1971-1988 monthly New York City fluid milk market data. Results indicate that in the absence of autocorrelation and multicollinearity among the lagged advertising variables, the unrestricted OLS estimator is still the preferred estimator, based on Mean Square Error and Root Mean Square Percent Error criteria. In this case, the Almon and Shiller estimators perform equally well, although next only to the OLS estimator. In the presence of autocorrelation or multicollinearity however, the restricted estimators may outperform the OLS estimator, in a MSE sense, with the flexible Shiller estimator (which subsumes the Almon) being more desirable.Marketing,
The principal soil areas of Iowa
All the soils of Iowa without exception are, in respect to their origin, referable to one or the other of four easily distinguishable classes, which, are to be found in plainly marked areas. These are:
1. Geest, or soils resulting from the secular decay of indurated rocks.
2. Soils Of Fluviatile Origin, or stream made soils (alluvium).
3. Soils Of Aeolian Origin, or wind made soils (loess).
4. Soils Of Glacial Origin, or ice made soils (till)
