    Impact of data center placement on the power consumption of flexible-grid optical networks

    The increasing trend of global IP traffic is mainly driven by high-definition video services and cloud computing and storage. Moreover, to maintain a high quality of service in content delivery networking, data are geographically replicated in data centers distributed within network topologies. Thus, data centers are an emerging scenario for research and development aimed at energy-efficient transmission and networking solutions. Previous research work has focused on intradata center energy efficiency while interdata center energy issues have not been extensively analyzed yet. We propose heuristics and meta-heuristics for optimal placement of data centers with minimum power consumption over a network topology relying on flex-grid spectral use. In order to minimize the network's power consumption, we have performed a detailed comparison of heuristic and meta-heuristic designs for different network scenarios based on real topologies. Moreover, our results show that meta-heuristic provides an optimum data center placement in a reasonable amount of time for a small- to medium-sized network

    Recognition of Radar-Based Deaf Sign Language Using Convolution Neural Network

    The difficulties in the communication between the deaf and normal people through sign language can be overcome by implementing deep learning in the gestures signal recognition. The use of the Convolution Neural Network (CNN) in distinguishing radar-based gesture signals of deaf sign language has not been investigated. This paper describes the recognition of gestures of deaf sign language using radar and CNN. Six gestures of deaf sign language were acquired from normal subjects using a radar system and processed. Short-time Fourier Transform was performed to extract the gestures features and the classification was performed using CNN. The performance of CNN was examined using two types of inputs; segmented and non-segmented spectrograms. The accuracy of recognising the gestures is higher (92.31%) using the non-segmented spectrograms compared to the segmented spectrogram. The radar-based deaf sign language could be recognised accurately using CNN without segmentation

    A shortcut to identifying small molecule signals that regulate behavior and development in Caenorhabditis elegans

    Small molecule metabolites play important roles in Caenorhabditis elegans biology, but effective approaches for identifying their chemical structures are lacking. Recent studies revealed that a family of glycosides, the ascarosides, differentially regulate C. elegans development and behavior. Low concentrations of ascarosides attract males and thus appear to be part of the C. elegans sex pheromone, whereas higher concentrations induce developmental arrest at the dauer stage, an alternative, nonaging larval stage. The ascarosides act synergistically, which presented challenges for their identification via traditional activity-guided fractionation. As a result the chemical characterization of the dauer and male attracting pheromones remained incomplete. Here, we describe the identification of several additional pheromone components by using a recently developed NMR-spectroscopic approach, differential analysis by 2D NMR spectroscopy (DANS), which simplifies linking small molecule metabolites with their biological function. DANS-based comparison of wild-type C. elegans and a signaling-deficient mutant, daf-22, enabled identification of 3 known and 4 previously undescribed ascarosides, including a compound that features a p-aminobenzoic acid subunit. Biological testing of synthetic samples of these compounds revealed additional evidence for synergy and provided insights into structure–activity relationships. Using a combination of the three most active ascarosides allowed full reconstitution of the male-attracting activity of wild-type pheromone extract. Our results highlight the efficacy of DANS as a method for identifying small-molecule metabolites and placing them within a specific genetic context. This study further supports the hypothesis that ascarosides represent a structurally diverse set of nematode signaling molecules regulating major life history traits

    Inhomogeneous multidimensional cosmological models with a higher dimensional space-time manifold M= M_0 x M_1 ...x M_n are investigated under dimensional reduction to a D_0-dimensional effective non-minimally coupled sigma-model which generalizes the familiar Brans-Dicke model. It is argued that the Einstein frame should be considered as the physical one. The general prescription for the Einstein frame reformulation of known solutions in the Brans-Dicke frame is given. As an example, the reformulation is demonstrated explicitly for the generalized Kasner solutions where it is shown that in the Einstein frame there are no solutions with inflation of the external space.Comment: 27 pages, Revte

    Microstructure and wear behaviour of high alloyed hot-work tool steels 1.2343 and 1.2367 under thermo-mechanical loading

    Tools and their maintenance costs in hot forging processes account for a considerable proportion of the total components' costs. Forging tools undergo extreme heating and subsequent cooling during the forging process and between the forging cycles, respectively. This cyclic heating and cooling of the tool surfaces leads to local changes in the tool microstructure which result in hardening or softening of the material in different regions of the tool and consequently influence the tool strength. Temperature in the tool areas experiencing high thermo-mechanical loadings can exceed the austenitic temperature. Hence, a strong cooling, for example by spraying or lubrication, can lead to formation of a martensitic layer in the boundary zone of the tool. Due to its higher hardness, martensitic layer has greater resistance to wear as compared to the basic or tempered materials. In the scope of this paper, the austenitisation behaviours of two high alloyed hot-work tool steels, 1.2343 and 1.2367, have been characterized by means of dilatometer tests to obtain time-temperature-austenitisation (TTA) diagrams for specimen under thermo-mechanical loads. Moreover, continuous-cooling-transformation (CCT) diagrams were recorded. Metallographic investigations were carried out to gather a detailed understanding of the microstructure behaviour and its resulting hardness. With the results of this works, it is aimed to gather a detailed and accurate insight into the arising hardening and softening effects. This would eventually lead to an optimisation of the numerical modelling for tool wear prediction

    Fission and cluster decay of 76^{76}Sr nucleus in the ground-state and formed in heavy-ion reactions

    Calculations for fission and cluster decay of 76Sr^{76}Sr are presented for this nucleus to be in its ground-state or formed as an excited compound system in heavy-ion reactions. The predicted mass distribution, for the dynamical collective mass transfer process assumed for fission of 76Sr^{76}Sr, is clearly asymmetric, favouring α\alpha -nuclei. Cluster decay is studied within a preformed cluster model, both for ground-state to ground-state decays and from excited compound system to the ground-state(s) or excited states(s) of the fragments.Comment: 14 pages LaTeX, 5 Figures available upon request Submitted to Phys.
