Reward learning as a potential target for pharmacological augmentation of cognitive remediation for schizophrenia: a roadmap for preclinical development.
RationaleImpaired cognitive abilities are a key characteristic of schizophrenia. Although currently approved pharmacological treatments have demonstrated efficacy for positive symptoms, to date no pharmacological treatments successfully reverse cognitive dysfunction in these patients. Cognitively-based interventions such as cognitive remediation (CR) and other psychosocial interventions however, may improve some of the cognitive and functional deficits of schizophrenia. Given that these treatments are time-consuming and labor-intensive, maximizing their effectiveness is a priority. Augmenting psychosocial interventions with pharmacological treatments may be a viable strategy for reducing the impact of cognitive deficits in patients with schizophrenia.ObjectiveWe propose a strategy to develop pharmacological treatments that can enhance the reward-related learning processes underlying successful skill-learning in psychosocial interventions. Specifically, we review clinical and preclinical evidence and paradigms that can be utilized to develop these pharmacological augmentation strategies. Prototypes for this approach include dopamine D1 receptor and α7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor agonists as attractive targets to specifically enhance reward-related learning during CR.ConclusionThe approach outlined here could be used broadly to develop pharmacological augmentation strategies across a number of cognitive domains underlying successful psychosocial treatment
Planetary isophotes as a clue to aerosol characteristics
A study was conducted to see how much information could be extracted from the Mariner 9 Mars isophotes taken at a phase angle of approximately 60 deg. It was found that the Minnaert functions and both isotropic and Rayleigh scattering could easily be ruled out, and that it was essential to use forward-peaked phase functions, which were computed from Mie theory. Isophotes similar to those observed assuming a semi-infinite dust cloud with a considerable variation in particle properties and size distribution could be obtained, so long as the ratio of the multiply- to singly-scattered light was held within certain limits. These conditions are met by micron-sized, moderatly absorbing mineral grains whose mean size should not be much larger than a micron. It was also found that a dust cloud of finite optical thickness bounded from below by a Lambert ground would fit the isophote data

Results from tests, with van-mounted sensor, of magnetic leader cable for aircraft guidance during roll-out and turnoff
Tests were conducted with a van mounted experimental magnetic leader cable sensor to evaluate its potential for measuring aircraft displacement and heading with respect to the leader cable during roll out and turnoff. Test results show that the system may be usable in measuring displacement but the heading measurement contains errors introduced by distortion of the magnetic field by the metal van or aircraft
A Data Exchange Standard for Optical (Visible/IR) Interferometry
This paper describes the OI Exchange Format, a standard for exchanging
calibrated data from optical (visible/infrared) stellar interferometers. The
standard is based on the Flexible Image Transport System (FITS), and supports
storage of the optical interferometric observables including squared visibility
and closure phase -- data products not included in radio interferometry
standards such as UV-FITS. The format has already gained the support of most
currently-operating optical interferometer projects, including COAST, NPOI,
IOTA, CHARA, VLTI, PTI, and the Keck Interferometer, and is endorsed by the IAU
Working Group on Optical Interferometry. Software is available for reading,

Entropy of the Randall-Sundrum brane world with the generalized uncertainty principle
By introducing the generalized uncertainty principle, we calculate the
entropy of the bulk scalar field on the Randall-Sundrum brane background
without any cutoff. We obtain the entropy of the massive scalar field
proportional to the horizon area. Here, we observe that the mass contribution
to the entropy exists in contrast to all previous results, which is independent
of the mass of the scalar field, of the usual black hole cases with the
