Low-momentum ring diagrams of neutron matter at and near the unitary limit
We study neutron matter at and near the unitary limit using a low-momentum
ring diagram approach. By slightly tuning the meson-exchange CD-Bonn potential,
neutron-neutron potentials with various scattering lengths such as
and are constructed. Such potentials are renormalized
with rigorous procedures to give the corresponding -equivalent
low-momentum potentials , with which the low-momentum
particle-particle hole-hole ring diagrams are summed up to all orders, giving
the ground state energy of neutron matter for various scattering lengths.
At the limit of , our calculated ratio of to that of
the non-interacting case is found remarkably close to a constant of 0.44 over a
wide range of Fermi-momenta. This result reveals an universality that is well
consistent with the recent experimental and Monte-Carlo computational study on
low-density cold Fermi gas at the unitary limit. The overall behavior of this
ratio obtained with various scattering lengths is presented and discussed.

Unitarity potentials and neutron matter at the unitary limit
We study the equation of state of neutron matter using a family of unitarity
potentials all of which are constructed to have infinite scattering
lengths . For such system, a quantity of much interest is the ratio
where is the true ground-state energy of the system,
and is that for the non-interacting system. In the limit of
, often referred to as the unitary limit, this ratio is
expected to approach a universal constant, namely . In the
present work we calculate this ratio using a family of hard-core
square-well potentials whose can be exactly obtained, thus enabling us to
have many potentials of different ranges and strengths, all with infinite
. We have also calculated using a unitarity CDBonn potential
obtained by slightly scaling its meson parameters. The ratios given by
these different unitarity potentials are all close to each other and also
remarkably close to 0.44, suggesting that the above ratio is indifferent
to the details of the underlying interactions as long as they have infinite
scattering length. A sum-rule and scaling constraint for the renormalized
low-momentum interaction in neutron matter at the unitary limit is discussed.Comment: 7.5 pages, 7 figure
Proteasome inhibition alleviates prolonged moderate compression-induced muscle pathology
Background: The molecular mechanism initiating deep pressure ulcer remains to be elucidated. The present study tested the hypothesis that the ubiquitin proteasome system is involved in the signalling mechanism in pressure-induced deep tissue injury. Methods. Adult Sprague Dawley rats were subjected to an experimental compression model to induce deep tissue injury. The tibialis region of the right hind limb was subjected to 100 mmHg of static pressure for six hours on each of two consecutive days. The compression pressure was continuously monitored by a three-axial force transducer within the compression indentor. The left hind limb served as the intra-animal control. Muscle tissues underneath the compressed region were collected and used for analyses. Results: Our results demonstrated that the activity of 20S proteasome and the protein abundance of ubiquitin and MAFbx/atrogin-1 were elevated in conjunction with pathohistological changes in the compressed muscle, as compared to control muscle. The administration of the proteasome inhibitor MG132 was found to be effective in ameliorating the development of pathological histology in compressed muscle. Furthermore, 20S proteasome activity and protein content of ubiquitin and MAFbx/atrogin-1 showed no apparent increase in the MG132-treated muscle following compression. Conclusion: Our data suggest that the ubiquitin proteasome system may play a role in the pathogenesis of pressure-induced deep tissue injury. © 2011 Siu et al; licensee BioMed Central Ltd.Link_to_subscribed_fulltex
A Case Study in Macao

Publisher Copyright: © 2022 by the authors.Despite the levels of air pollution in Macao continuing to improve over recent years, there are still days with high-pollution episodes that cause great health concerns to the local community. Therefore, it is very important to accurately forecast air quality in Macao. Machine learning methods such as random forest (RF), gradient boosting (GB), support vector regression (SVR), and multiple linear regression (MLR) were applied to predict the levels of particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5) concentrations in Macao. The forecast models were built and trained using the meteorological and air quality data from 2013 to 2018, and the air quality data from 2019 to 2021 were used for validation. Our results show that there is no significant difference between the performance of the four methods in predicting the air quality data for 2019 (before the COVID-19 pandemic) and 2021 (the new normal period). However, RF performed significantly better than the other methods for 2020 (amid the pandemic) with a higher coefficient of determination (R2) and lower RMSE, MAE, and BIAS. The reduced performance of the statistical MLR and other ML models was presumably due to the unprecedented low levels of PM10 and PM2.5 concentrations in 2020. Therefore, this study suggests that RF is the most reliable prediction method for pollutant concentrations, especially in the event of drastic air quality changes due to unexpected circumstances, such as a lockdown caused by a widespread infectious disease.publishersversionpublishe
Computer simulations of electrorheological fluids in the dipole-induced dipole model
We have employed the multiple image method to compute the interparticle force
for a polydisperse electrorheological (ER) fluid in which the suspended
particles can have various sizes and different permittivites. The point-dipole
(PD) approximation being routinely adopted in computer simulation of ER fluids
is shown to err considerably when the particles approach and finally touch due
to multipolar interactions. The PD approximation becomes even worse when the
dielectric contrast between the particles and the host medium is large. From
the results, we show that the dipole-induced-dipole (DID) model yields very
good agreements with the multiple image results for a wide range of dielectric
contrasts and polydispersity. As an illustration, we have employed the DID
model to simulate the athermal aggregation of particles in ER fluids both in
uniaxial and rotating fields. We find that the aggregation time is
significantly reduced. The DID model accounts for multipolar interaction

Elevation of methylated DNA in KILLIN/PTEN in the plasma of patients with thyroid and/or breast cancer
© 2014 Ng et al. Around 80% of mutations in the PTEN gene have been reported to be associated with diseases such as Cowden syndrome, which is an autosomal dominant disorder associated with an increased risk of developing breast, thyroid, and endometrial neoplasms. Recent studies have also demonstrated that KILLIN, which is located proximally to PTEN, shares the same transcription start site, and is assumed to be regulated by the same promoter, but is transcribed in the opposite direction. In this regard, we postulate that there may be a connection between KILLIN/PTEN genes and breast and thyroid cancers. Using real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR), we found that expression of KILLIN, but not PTEN, was significantly decreased in 23 Chinese women with a personal history of breast and thyroid cancer or a personal history of breast cancer and a family history of thyroid cancer, or vice versa, and at least two persons in the family with thyroid cancer or at a young age ,40 years, when compared with healthy controls (P<0.0001). No PTEN mutations were found in these 23 patients. We then developed a simple methylation-sensitive restriction enzyme digestion followed by real-time quantitative assay to quantify plasma methylated KILLIN/PTEN DNA in these patients. Plasma levels of methylated KILLIN/PTEN DNA were significantly increased in these patients when compared with healthy controls (P<0.05). This study shows that plasma methylated KILLIN/PTEN DNA was significantly elevated, suggesting hypermethylation of the KILLIN/PTEN promoter in breast and thyroid cancer patients.published_or_final_versio
