The absence of efficient dual pairs of spanning trees in planar graphs
A spanning tree T in a finite planar connected graph G determines a dual
spanning tree T* in the dual graph G such that T and T* do not intersect. We
show that it is not always possible to find T in G, such that the diameters of
T and T* are both within a uniform multiplicative constant (independent of G)
of the diameters of their ambient graphs.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figure
High voltage solid-state relay
Hybrid microelectronics relay has characteristics significantly superior to conventional solid state relays. Relay provides 2500 Vdc input to output isolation and operates from high threshold logic signal to switch load of 400 Vdc at 2 mA. A simplex-like search method for bi-objective optimization
We describe a new algorithm for bi-objective optimization, similar to the Nelder Mead simplex
algorithm, widely used for single objective optimization. For diferentiable bi-objective functions on
a continuous search space, internal Pareto optima occur where the two gradient vectors point in
opposite directions. So such optima may be located by minimizing the cosine of the angle between
these vectors. This requires a complex rather than a simplex, so we term the technique the \cosine
seeking complex". An extra beneft of this approach is that a successful search identifes the direction
of the effcient curve of Pareto points, expediting further searches. Results are presented for some
standard test functions. The method presented is quite complicated and space considerations here
preclude complete details. We hope to publish a fuller description in another place
The multiple junction edge illuminated solar cell
The multiple junction edge illuminated solar cell was devised for high voltage low current applications. Devices to be flight tested in early 1974 with 96 series connected PNN+ junctions in a 2 cm X 2.3 cm size deliver 36 volts at 1 milliampere. Test data of M-J cells fabricated with resistivities of 10, 50, 100, 200, 450, and 1000 ohm cm silicon are presented and problem areas are discussed. An additional potential application of the M-J cell lies in ultilization of its high intensity performance that has been demonstrated at levels in excess of 100 AMO suns
Habitus and Responsible Dog-ownership: reconsidering the health promotion implications of 'dog-shaped' holes in people's lives.
Responsible dog ownership has been identified as a point of intervention to promote physical activity, based upon an expectation of dog walking in public space. Nevertheless, quantitative research has found variability among owners in their dog walking. In this study, we explore the implications for health promotion of such variability. We do so by drawing on the concepts of habitus and social capital to analyse qualitative interviews. Participants were recruited from a social network in a cosmopolitan city with a policy framework intended to ensure equitable access to public space for dog walkers. The analysis confirms dog ownership can promote both physical activity and social capital, to the extent of mutual reinforcement. Yet we identified patterns of care in which dogs could influence people’s emotional well-being without promoting physical activity. In particular, some owners were not capable of extensive dog walking but still benefited emotionally from dog ownership and from interpersonal interactions facilitated by dog ownership. Some participants’ dogs, however, could not be walked in public without risking public safety and social sanctions. Responsible dog ownership can therefore also entail not exercising dogs. Second Epoch Global VLBI Observations of Compact Radio Sources in the M82 Starburst Galaxy
We have presented the results of a second epoch of global Very Long Baseline
Interferometry observations, taken on 23 February 2001 at a wavelength of 18
cm, of the central kiloparsec of the nearby starburst galaxy Messier 82. These
observations were aimed at studying the structural and flux evolution of some
of the compact radio sources in the central region that have been identified as
supernova remnants. The objects 41.95+575 and 43.31+592 have been studied,
expansion velocities of 2500 +/- 1200 km/s and 7350 +/- 2100 km/s respectively
have been derived. Flux densities of 31.1 +/- 0.3 mJy and 17.4 +/- 0.3 mJy have
been measured for the two objects. These results are consistent with

Understanding the design rules for a nonintrusive, textile, heart rate monitoring system
Background and Objectives: Nonintrusive heart rate (HR) monitoring can be a useful tool for health monitoring. By creating capacitively coupled textile electrodes, a comfortable monitoring system can be integrated into seating or bedding that can monitor HR through clothing. This work empirically studied two factors for a system of this type: the electrode size and the material worn by the subject.
Materials and Methods: HR measurements were taken using six different sizes of the rectangular textile electrode with four subjects and the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the signals were analyzed. A further set of experiments were conducted with a single subject and a fixed electrode size where different materials were worn. Results: Electrode size was seen to have a statistically insignificant effect on the collected signal quality. The SNR was also largely unaffected by the worn material type.
Conclusion: This study provided empirical data relating to two important factors for nonintrusive, textile, and HR monitoring systems. This data will be helpful for designing a seat-based HR monitoring system or to understand the operational limitations of a system of this type
