    Phase diagrams of period-4 spin chains consisting of three kinds of spins

    We study a period-4 antiferromagnetic mixed quantum spin chain consisting of three kinds of spins. When the ground state is singlet, the spin magnitudes in a unit cell are arrayed as (s-t, s, s+t, s) with integer or half-odd integer s and t (0 <= t < s). The spin Hamiltonian is mapped onto a nonlinear sigma model (NLSM) in a previously developed method. The resultant NLSM includes only two independent parameters originating from four exchange constants for fixed s and t. The topological angle in the NLSM determines the gapless phase boundaries between disordered phases in the parameter space. The phase diagrams for various s and t shows rich structures. We systematically explain the phases in the singlet-cluster-solid picture.Comment: 8 pages (16 figures included

    Aerodynamic performance of a free-flying dragonfly—A span-resolved investigation

    We present a quantitative characterization of the unsteady aerodynamic features of a live, free-flying dragonfly under a well-established flight condition. In particular, our investigations cover the span-wise features of vortex interactions between the fore- and hind-pairs of wings that could be a distinctive feature of a high aspect ratio tandem flapping wing pair. Flapping kinematics and dynamic wing-shape deformation of a dragonfly were measured by tracking painted landmarks on the wings. Using it as the input, computational fluid dynamics analyses were conducted, complemented with time-resolved particle image velocimetry flow measurements to better understand the aerodynamics associated with a dragonfly. The results show that the flow structures around hindwing’s inner region are influenced by forewing’s leading edge vortex, while those around hindwing’s outer region are more influenced by forewing’s shed trailing edge vortex. Using a span-resolved approach, we found that the forewing–hindwing interactions affect the horizontal force (thrust) generation of the hindwing most prominently and the modulation of the force generation is distributed evenly around the midspan. Compared to operating in isolation, the thrust of the hindwing is largely increased during upstroke, albeit the drag is also slightly increased during the downstroke. The vertical force generation is moderately affected by the forewing–hindwing interactions and the modulation takes place in the outer 40% of the hindwing span during the downstroke and in the inner 60% of the span during the upstroke

    Projected SO(5) Hamiltonian for Cuprates and Its Applications

    The projected SO(5) (pSO(5)) Hamiltonian incorporates the quantum spin and superconducting fluctuations of underdoped cuprates in terms of four bosons moving on a coarse grained lattice. A simple mean field approximation can explain some key feautures of the experimental phase diagram: (i) The Mott transition between antiferromagnet and superconductor, (ii) The increase of T_c and superfluid stiffness with hole concentration x and (iii) The increase of antiferromagnetic resonance energy as sqrt{x-x_c} in the superconducting phase. We apply this theory to explain the ``two gaps'' problem found in underdoped cuprate Superconductor-Normal- Superconductor junctions. In particular we explain the sharp subgap Andreev peaks of the differential resistance, as signatures of the antiferromagnetic resonance (the magnon mass gap). A critical test of this theory is proposed. The tunneling charge, as measured by shot noise, should change by increments of Delta Q= 2e at the Andreev peaks, rather than by Delta Q=e as in conventional superconductors.Comment: 3 EPS figure

    Interesting magnetic properties of Fe1−x_{1-x}Cox_xSi alloys

    Solid solution between nonmagnetic narrow gap semiconductor FeSi and diamagnetic semi-metal CoSi gives rise to interesting metallic alloys with long-range helical magnetic ordering, for a wide range of intermediate concentration. We report various interesting magnetic properties of these alloys, including low temperature re-entrant spin-glass like behaviour and a novel inverted magnetic hysteresis loop. Role of Dzyaloshinski-Moriya interaction in the magnetic response of these non-centrosymmetric alloys is discussed.Comment: 11 pages and 3 figure

    Generalized conductance sum rule in atomic break junctions

    When an atomic-size break junction is mechanically stretched, the total conductance of the contact remains approximately constant over a wide range of elongations, although at the same time the transmissions of the individual channels (valence orbitals of the junction atom) undergo strong variations. We propose a microscopic explanation of this phenomenon, based on Coulomb correlation effects between electrons in valence orbitals of the junction atom.     Computational Fluid-Structure Interaction of a Deformable Flapping Wing for Micro Air Vehicle Applications

    Motivated by micro air vehicle applications, a fluid-structure coupling procedure between a Navier- Stokes solver and a three-dimensional FEM beam solver is presented along with selected results highlighting some of the aerodynamics implications. The fluid model includes laminar, the k -Δ turbulence closure, and a filter-based k -Δ closure. The structural model is based on an asymptotic approximation to the equations of elasticity. Using the slenderness as the small parameter, the equations are decomposed into two independent variational problems, corresponding to (i) crosssectional, small-deformation and (ii) longitudinal, large deformation analyses. A model example problem corresponding to a NACA0012 wing of aspect ratio 3 in pure heave motion is presented and the results compared against available experiment data. Quantitative comparisons with experiment are done for the rigid wing and the implications of wing flexibility on aerodynamics are presented in a qualitative sense. It was observed that phase lag of the wing tip displacement relative to the flapping motion becomes more pronounced as the fluid density increases.
