Constituting monetary conservatives via the 'savings habit': New Labour and the British housing market bubble
The ongoing world credit crunch might well kill off the most recent bubble dynamics in the British housing market by driving prices systematically downwards from their 2007 peak. Nonetheless, the experience of that bubble still warrants analytical attention. The Labour Government might not have been responsible for consciously creating it, but it has certainly grasped the opportunities the bubble has provided in an attempt to enforce a process of agential change at the heart of the British economy. The key issue in this respect is the way in which the Government has challenged the legitimacy of passive welfare receipts in favour of establishing a welfare system based on incorporating the individual into an active asset-holding society. The housing market has taken on new political significance as a means for individuals first to acquire assets and then to accumulate wealth on the back of asset ownership. The ensuing integration of the housing market into an increasingly reconfigured welfare system has permeated into the politics of everyday life. It has been consistent with individuals remaking their political subjectivities in line with preferences for the type of conservative monetary policies that typically keep house price bubbles inflated
Rapid tyrosine phosphorylation of neuronal proteins including tau and focal adhesion kinase in response to amyloid-beta peptide exposure: Involvement of src family protein kinases
The increased production of amyloid beta -peptide (A beta) in Alzheimer's disease is acknowledged to be a key pathogenic event. In this study, we examined the response of primary human and rat brain cortical cultures to A beta administration and found a marked increase in the tyrosine phosphorylation content of numerous neuronal proteins, including tau and putative microtubule-associated protein 2c (MAP2c). We also found that paired helical filaments of aggregated and hyperphosphorylated tau are tyrosine phosphorylated, indicating that changes in the phosphotyrosine content of cytoplasmic proteins in response to A beta are potentially an important process. Increased tyrosine phosphorylation of cytoskeletal and other neuronal proteins was specific to fibrillar A beta (25-35) and A beta (1-42). The tyrosine phosphorylation was blocked by addition of the Src family tyrosine kinase inhibitor 4-amino-5-( 4-chlorophenyl)- 7(t-butyl) pyrazol(3,4-D) pyramide (PP2) and the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase inhibitor LY 294002. Tyrosine phosphorylation of tau and MAP2c was concomitant with an increase in the tyrosine phosphorylation and subsequent putative activation of the non-receptor kinase, focal adhesion kinase (FAK). Immunoprecipitation of Fyn, a member of the Src family, from A beta (25-35)-treated neurons showed an increased association of Fyn with FAK. A beta treatment of cells also stimulated the sustained activation of extracellular regulated kinase-2, which was blocked by addition of PP2 and LY 294002, suggesting that FAK/Fyn/PI3-kinase association is upstream of mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinase signaling in A beta -treated neurons. This cascade of signaling events contains the earliest biochemical changes in neurons to be described in response to A beta exposure and may be critical for subsequent neurodegenerative changes
The Current State of Performance Appraisal Research and Practice: Concerns, Directions, and Implications
On the surface, it is not readily apparent how some performance appraisal research issues inform performance appraisal practice. Because performance appraisal is an applied topic, it is useful to periodically consider the current state of performance research and its relation to performance appraisal practice. This review examines the performance appraisal literature published in both academic and practitioner outlets between 1985 and 1990, briefly discusses the current state of performance appraisal practice, highlights the juxtaposition of research and practice, and suggests directions for further research
Herschel observations of deuterated water towards Sgr B2(M)
Observations of HDO are an important complement for studies of water, because
they give strong constraints on the formation processes -- grain surfaces
versus energetic process in the gas phase, e.g. in shocks. The HIFI
observations of multiple transitions of HDO in Sgr~B2(M) presented here allow
the determination of the HDO abundance throughout the envelope, which has not
been possible before with ground-based observations only. The abundance
structure has been modeled with the spherical Monte Carlo radiative transfer
code RATRAN, which also takes radiative pumping by continuum emission from dust
into account. The modeling reveals that the abundance of HDO rises steeply with
temperature from a low abundance () in the outer envelope
at temperatures below 100~K through a medium abundance () in
the inner envelope/outer core, at temperatures between 100 and 200~K, and
finally a high abundance () at temperatures above 200~K in

Sustaining entrepreneurial business: a complexity perspective on processes that produce emergent practice
This article examines the management practices in an entrepreneurial small firm which sustain the business. Using a longitudinal qualitative case study, four general processes are identified (experimentation, reflexivity, organising and sensing), that together provide a mechanism to sustain the enterprise. The analysis draws on concepts from entrepreneurship and complexity science. We suggest that an entrepreneurâs awareness of the role of these parallel processes will facilitate their approaches to sustaining and developing enterprises. We also suggest that these processes operate in parallel at multiple levels, including the self, the business and inter-firm networks. This finding contributes to a general theory of entrepreneurship. A number of areas for further research are discussed arising from this result
Magnetic Fields in Star-Forming Molecular Clouds III. Submillimeter Polarimetry of Intermediate Mass Cores and Filaments in Orion B
Using the imaging polarimeter for the Submillimeter Common User Bolometric
Array at the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope, we have detected polarized thermal
emission at 850 micron from dust toward three star-forming core systems in the
Orion B molecular cloud: NGC 2071, NGC 2024 and LBS 23N (HH 24). The
polarization patterns are not indicative of those expected for magnetic fields
dominated by a single field direction, and all exhibit diminished polarization
percentages toward the highest intensity peaks. NGC 2024 has the most organized
polarization pattern which is centered consistently along the length of a chain
of 7 far-infrared sources. We have modeled NGC 2024 using a helical field
geometry threading a curved filament and also as a magnetic field swept up by
the ionization front of the expanding HII region. In the latter case, the field
is bent by the dense ridge, which accounts for both the polarization pattern
and existing measurements of the line-of-sight field strength toward the
northern cores FIR 1 to FIR 4. The direction of the net magnetic field
direction within NGC 2071 is perpendicular to the dominant outflow in that
region. Despite evidence that line contamination exists in the 850 micron
continuum, the levels of polarization measured indicate that the polarized
