Operating manual for coaxial injection combustion model
An operating manual for the coaxial injection combustion model (CICM) is presented as the final report for an eleven month effort designed to provide improvement, to verify, and to document the comprehensive computer program for analyzing the performance of thrust chamber operation with gas/liquid coaxial jet injection. The effort culminated in delivery of an operation FORTRAN IV computer program and associated documentation pertaining to the combustion conditions in the space shuttle main engine. The computer program is structured for compatibility with the standardized Joint Army-Navy-NASA-Air Force (JANNAF) performance evaluation procedure. Use of the CICM in conjunction with the JANNAF procedure allows the analysis of engine systems using coaxial gas/liquid injection
Plasma Cell Granuloma of the Thyroid: A Conservative Approach to a Rare Condition and Review of the Literature
Introduction. We present a case of an 89-year-old female who attended our surgical endocrine clinic with a 3-month history of a left-sided neck lump. There was no past medical history of thyroid disease. Methods. Following examination and further investigation, including core biopsy, a diagnosis of plasma cell granuloma of the thyroid was made. Biochemical testing of thyroid function and Thyroid Peroxidase Antibody was in-keeping with an associated Hashimoto's thyroiditis. Results. The patient was treated conservatively with thyroxine and regularly seen in clinic. TSH levels improved and the lump showed signs of regression. Conclusion. Plasma cell granuloma of the thyroid is rare with only 16 previously reported cases. We present a new approach to management without the use of surgery or steroids. The literature is reviewed comparing clinico-pathological features and management of other reported cases

Examining Cardiac and Behavioral Responses in a Modality Dominance Task
The current study examined cardiac and behavioral responsesto changing auditory and visual information while usingmodified oddball tasks. When instructed to press the samebutton for auditory and visual oddballs, auditory dominancewas found with cross-modal presentation slowing downvisual response times and decreasing visual accuracy. Wheninstructed to make separate responses to auditory and visualoddballs, visual dominance was found with cross-modalpresentation slowing down response times and decreasingauditory accuracy. However, examination of cardiacresponses that were time-locked to stimulus onset show cross-modal facilitation effects, with discrimination of oddballs andstandards occurring earlier in the course of processing in thecross-modal condition than in the unimodal conditions. Thesefindings shed light on potential mechanisms underlyingmodality dominance effects and have implications on tasksthat require simultaneous processing of auditory and visualinformation

The TAMORA algorithm: satellite rainfall estimates over West Africa using multi-spectral SEVIRI data
A multi-spectral rainfall estimation algorithm has been developed for the Sahel region of West Africa with the purpose of producing accumulated rainfall estimates for drought monitoring and food security. Radar data were used to calibrate multi-channel SEVIRI data from MSG, and a probability of rainfall at several different rain-rates was established for each combination of SEVIRI radiances. Radar calibrations from both Europe (the SatPrecip algorithm) and Niger (TAMORA algorithm) were used. 10 day estimates were accumulated from SatPrecip and TAMORA and compared with kriged gauge data and TAMSAT satellite rainfall estimates over West Africa. SatPrecip was found to produce large overestimates for the region, probably because of its non-local calibration. TAMORA was negatively biased for areas of West Africa with relatively high rainfall, but its skill was comparable to TAMSAT for the low-rainfall region climatologically similar to its calibration area around Niamey. These results confirm the high importance of local calibration for satellite-derived rainfall estimates. As TAMORA shows no improvement in skill over TAMSAT for dekadal estimates, the extra cloud-microphysical information provided by multi-spectral data may not be useful in determining rainfall accumulations at a ten day timescale. Work is ongoing to determine whether it shows improved accuracy at shorter timescales
