Preparation of a report by the writer on the Geology of Adams County for the Iowa Geological Survey has required a more complete field study of coal mine shaft sections and natural exposures in the west part of the county than had hitherto been made. This field study has brought out interesting details of the beds above the Nodaway coal seam not reported in previous literature. The purpose of this paper is to present the section observed

Durability Test on Iowa Limestones and Dolomites

The purpose of this paper is to summarize recent durability investigations of Iowa limestones and dolomites by the Iowa State Highway Commission, and to relate these investigations to the more general subject of the durability of Portland cement concrete. A subject as broad as the title indicates can be presented only very briefly at this time. The evidence discussed is for the most part from the Highway Commission records, supplemented by information from other sources including the Iowa Geological Survey publications and files. Acknowledgement is made to Bert Myers, Engineer of Materials and Tests, and to other employees of the Highway Commission who have assisted with information and suggestions, and to the Iowa Geological Survey for permission to use unpublished material in their files

Pennsylvanian Section at Crescent, and Logan, Iowa

Scarcity of road material supplies in southwestern Iowa has led the State Highway Commission to make careful scrutiny of all rock outcrops and to investigate thoroughly any which show promise. One such exposure, in SE¼ SE¼ Section 27, Crescent Township, Pottawattamie County, was test pitted in 1935. The complete section, including test pits, was referred by Wood and Reed to the Westerville, Cherryvale and Winterset members of the Kansas City Stage of the Missouri Series. Another, at Logan (SE¼ NW¼ Section 19, Jefferson Township, Harrison County) was test pitted in 1934, the section being assigned by Wood2 to the Pennsylvanian without attempting a closer correlation. Core drilling at each of these locations in 1937 has extended the section downward and afforded a basis for more positive correlation
