    Shape coexistence in neutron-deficient Kr isotopes: Constraints on the single-particle spectrum of self-consistent mean-field models from collective excitations

    We discuss shape coexistence in the neutron-deficient Kr72-Kr78 isotopes in the framework of configuration mixing calculations of particle-number and angular-momentum projected axial mean-field states obtained from self-consistent calculations with the Skyrme interaction SLy6 and a density-dependent pairing interaction. While our calculation reproduces qualitatively and quantitatively many of the global features of these nuclei, such as coexistence of prolate and oblate shapes, their strong mixing at low angular momentum, and the deformation of collective bands, the ordering of our calculated low-lying levels is at variance with experiment. We analyse the role of the single-particle spectrum of the underlying mean-field for the spectrum of collective excitations.Comment: accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.

    Immunohistology of ectopic secondary lymph follicles in subcutaneous nodules from patients with hyperreactive onchocerciasis (sowda)

    Ectopic secondary lymph follicles emerge in patients with autoimmune or infectious diseases, e.g. in the synovium in rheumatoid arthritis or the skin in Borrelia burgdorferi infection, but ectopic localisations in the skin are rarely described for helminth infections. We investigated the cellular composition of secondary lymph follicles in subcutaneous nodules from eight patients with hyperreactive onchocerciasis (synonymous “localised” form or sowda) using immunohistology. CD3- and CD45RO-positive T cells and CD20-positive B cells were present in the mantle zone. The germinal centre was characterised by many B cells and CD35-positive follicular dendritic cells, which formed a network of attached IgE- and CD23-positive cells with the low-affinity IgE (epsilon) receptor. Few of the B cells were labelled for IgG1, IgG2 and IgG4, whereas in other zones of the nodule IgG1 was expressed by plasma cells and IgG1-coated dead microfilariae. B cells and few macrophages expressed the MHC class II molecule HLA-DR. Mature CD68-positive tingible body macrophages with phagocytosed leukocytes and CD57-positive lymphocytes occurred in the germinal centre. Macrophages in the germinal centre only weakly expressed alpha1-antichymotrypsin in contrast to macrophages in other zones of the onchocercoma. Furthermore, the multifunctional cytokine TGF-beta was only weakly expressed by macrophages and lymphocytes in the secondary follicles. Only few tryptase-positive mast cells, calprotectin-positive young macrophages, eosinophils and neutrophils occurred in the secondary follicles, although these cells were abundant in the onchocercomas.     AGATA, Technical Proposal for an Advanced Gamma Tracking Array for the European Gamma Spectroscopy Community

    International audienceAn Advanced GAmma-ray Tracking Array, AGATA, is proposed for high-resolution γ-ray spectroscopy with exotic beams. AGATA will employ highly segmented Ge detectors as well as fully digital electronics and relies on newly developed pulse-shape analysis and tracking methods. The array is being designed in a way that it provides optimal properties for nuclear structure experiments in a wide range of beam velocities (from stopped to v/c ≈ 50%), almost independent of beam quality and background conditions. Selectivity and sensitivity of AGATA will be superior to any existing γ-array by several orders of magnitude. Hence, it will be for a long time a rich source for nuclear structure physics providing the means for new discoveries and opening challenging new perspectives. This document is the initial proposal sent to the European Commission to obtain the necessary funds for the project

    Lifetime measurements in 63^{63}Co and 65^{65}Co

    Lifetimes of the 9/21−9/2^-_1 and 3/21−3/2^-_1 states in 63^{63}Co and the 9/21−9/2^-_1 state in 65^{65}Co were measured using the recoil distance Doppler shift and the differential decay curve methods. The nuclei were populated by multi-nucleon transfer reactions in inverse kinematics. Gamma rays were measured with the EXOGAM Ge array and the recoiling fragments were fully identified using the large-acceptance VAMOS spectrometer. The E2 transition probabilities from the 3/21−3/2^-_1 and 9/21−9/2^-_1 states to the 7/2−7/2^- ground state could be extracted in 63^{63}Co as well as an upper limit for the 9/21−→7/21−9/2^-_1\rightarrow7/2^-_1 BB(E2) value in 65^{65}Co. The experimental results were compared to large-scale shell-model calculations in the pfpf and pfg9/2pfg_{9/2} model spaces, allowing to draw conclusions on the single-particle or collective nature of the various states.Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in Physical Review

    High-spin structure of Xe 134

The nuclear structure above long-lived isomers in Xe134 is investigated after multinucleon transfer (MNT) and actinide fission. Xenon-134 was populated as (i) a transfer product in Xe136+U238 and Xe136+Pb208 MNT reactions and (ii) as a fission product in the Xe136+U238 reaction employing the high-resolution Advanced Gamma Tracking Array (AGATA). Trajectory reconstruction has been applied for the complete identification of beamlike transfer products with the magnetic spectrometer PRISMA. The Xe136+Pt198 MNT reaction was studied with the Îł-ray spectrometer GAMMASPHERE in combination with the gas detector array Compact Heavy Ion Counter (CHICO). Several high-spin states in Xe134 on top of the two long-lived isomers are discovered based on γγ-coincidence relationships and information on the Îł-ray angular distributions as well as excitation energies from the total kinetic energy loss and fission fragments. The revised level scheme of Xe134 is extended up to an excitation energy of 5.832 MeV with tentative spin-parity assignments up to 16+. Previous assignments of states above the 7- isomer are revised.     Spectroscopy of the neutron-rich actinide nucleus U-240 following multinucleon-transfer reactions

Purpose: gamma-ray spectroscopy of neutron-rich heavy nuclei in the actinide region. Method: Multinucleon-transfer reactions in Zn-70 + U-238 and Xe-136 + U-238 have been measured in two experiments performed at the INFN Legnaro, Italy. In the Zn-70 experiment the high-resolution HPGe Clover Array (CLARA) coupled to the magnetic spectrometer PRISMA was employed. In the Xe-136 experiment the high-resolution Advanced Gamma Tracking Array (AGATA) was used in combination with PRISMA and the Detector Array for Multinucleon Transfer Ejectiles (DANTE). Results: The ground-state band (g.s. band) of U-240 was measured up to the 20(+) level and a tentative assignment was made up to the (24(+)) level. Results from gamma gamma coincidence and from particle coincidence analyses are shown. Moments of inertia (MoI) show a clear upbend. Evidence for an extended first negative-parity band of U-240 is found. Conclusions: A detailed comparison with latest calculations shows best agreement with cranked relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov (CRHB) calculations for the g.s. band properties.     Strong expression of TGF-beta in human host tissues around subcutaneous Dirofilaria repens

    Dirofilaria repens and other Dirofilaria species are widely distributed parasitic nematodes of carnivores, which occasionally are transmitted to men, causing subcutaneous nodules. In humans, it usually occurs only as single male or female filariae without production of microfilariae. The non-productive living or dead Dirofilaria worms in subcutaneous biopsies from 15 human patients permitted us to study the role of the pleiotropic and immunoregulatory cytokine transforming growth factor beta (TGF-beta) independent from the influence of microfilariae. Antiserum against latent TGF-beta 1 was used for an immunohistological examination. In the infiltrates around female and male filariae, there occurred strongly TGF-beta-positive macrophages, mast cells, endothelial cells, fibrocytes, and giant cells adjacent to dead worms. In one nodule, secondary lymph follicles were observed with clearly TGF-beta-positive B cells in the mantle zone and weakly positive macrophages and B cells in the germinal centre. A network of CD35-positive follicular dendritic cells was observed in the germinal centre. All Dirofilaria contained Wolbachia endobacteria, which probably had attracted the numerous TGF-beta-negative neutrophils near to the worm. Wolbachia were phagocytosed by neutrophils adjacent to dead filariae. Macrophages and lymphocytes expressed the MHC class II molecule HLA-DR in small accumulations of immune cells in the outer zone of the infiltrate and the mantle zone and germinal centre of secondary lymph follicles. It is concluded that single non-productive Dirofilaria worms elicit a strong expression of TGF-beta. This result is in accordance with observations on Onchocerca volvulus from patients with the hyporeactive (generalised) form

    Multi-Phonon Îł\gamma-Vibrational Bands and the Triaxial Projected Shell Model

    We present a fully quantum-mechanical, microscopic, unified treatment of ground-state band and multi-phonon γ\gamma-vibrational bands using shell model diagonalization with the triaxial projected shell model. The results agree very well with data on the g- and γ\gamma-band spectra in 156−170^{156-170}Er, as well as with recently measured 4+4^+ 2-phonon γ\gamma-bandhead energies in 166^{166}Er and 168^{168}Er. Multi-phonon γ\gamma-excitation energies are predicted.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Phys. Lett.
