Creating a Culture of Philanthropy: Three Things to Keep in Mind

    Get PDF
A culture of philanthropy is necessary for a nonprofit to be successful in 2016. Resources and funds are not so bountiful as they were in the past. Every nonprofit is different and has a different audience, but in general, there are three items to keep in mind while developing a philanthropic culture: 1) nonprofits should strategically plan their culture; 2) nonprofits should engage their own employees and volunteers in the culture; and 3) nonprofits must actively appreciate their donors, old and new

Evidence-Based Practice and Organizational Development in Libraries

This article is written for a Festschrift for F. W. Lancaster, and it summarizes the author???s library school experiences as a student of Professor Lancaster and Professor Herbert Goldhor at the University of Illinois. Both professors instilled in students a strong inclination to use real and appropriate information in evaluating situations, making decisions, delivering information services, and managing libraries. The author suggests that this Lancaster-Goldhor approach to information, and to data-driven decision making, anticipated the current movement toward evidence-based practice (EBP) in libraries. He suggests that libraries embrace the premises, philosophy, values, and practices of organizational development (OD) as an overarching discipline that facilitates EBP in the library culture, and ultimately leads to healthier and more effective organizations. This article complements a 2004 Library Trends article on OD, and numerous recent publications on OD and related topics are cited.published or submitted for publicatio

Modeling of joints for the dynamic analysis of truss structures

    Get PDF
An experimentally-based method for determining the stiffness and damping of truss joints is described. The analytical models use springs and both viscous and friction dampers to simulate joint load-deflection behavior. A least-squares algorithm is developed to identify the stiffness and damping coefficients of the analytical joint models from test data. The effects of nonlinear joint stiffness such as joint dead band are also studied. Equations for predicting the sensitivity of beam deformations to changes in joint stiffness are derived and used to show the level of joint stiffness required for nearly rigid joint behavior. Finally, the global frequency sensitivity of a truss structure to random perturbations in joint stiffness is discussed

Enhancements to the IBM version of COSMIC/NASTRAN

    Get PDF
Major improvements were made to the IBM version of COSMIC/NASTRAN by RPK Corporation under contract to IBM Corporation. These improvements will become part of COSMIC's IBM version and will be available in the second quarter of 1989. The first improvement is the inclusion of code to take advantage of IBM's new Vector Facility (VF) on its 3090 machines. The remaining improvements are modifications that will benefit all users as a result of the extended addressing capability provided by the MVS/XA operating system. These improvements include the availability of an in-memory data base that potentially eliminates the need for I/O to the PRIxx disk files. Another improvement is the elimination of multiple load modules that have to be loaded for every link switch within NASTRAN. The last improvement allows for NASTRAN to execute above the 16 mega-byte line. This improvement allows for NASTRAN to have access to 2 giga-bytes of memory for open core and the in-memory data base

    Simulator systems integration

    Get PDF
The implementation of available wind shear data into general aviation flight training simulators is discussed. Currently, there are 11 simulators with wind shear models installed involving some 9 different aircraft models. Retrofits to other systems that were put out earlier are currently underway, and all the new simulators will have wind shear available for the instructors to use for demonstrations and training. There are three types of computer systems involved, and two different types of instructor stations. Most of the systems with wind shear are the CRT-type displays. The integration of wind shear models in flight simulators is discussed in detail
