Culture and Race in Provider-Client Relationships
Given that minority group members are underrepresented in the teaching, medical, and legal professions, minority group members often have White teachers, doctors, and lawyers. This is frequently the case even when students, patients and clients would prefer service providers similar to them in racial or ethnic background. This paper identifies possible cultural barriers to effective one-on-one relationships between White teachers, doctors and lawyers and those who receive their services, explores the potential for biased expectations to influence the services provided and outcomes attained, and contrasts the goals of White and minority educators, doctors, and lawyers, arguing that these differences have potentially negative implications for service recipients. Policy approaches to mitigating potential problems caused by the lack of match are considered, as are potential problems arising from an overly narrow emphasis on match
Theoretical framework of entangled-photon generation from biexcitons in nano-to-bulk crossover regime with planar geometry
We have constructed a theoretical framework of the biexciton-resonant
hyperparametric scattering for the pursuit of high-power and high-quality
generation of entangled photon pairs. Our framework is applicable to
nano-to-bulk crossover regime where the center-of-mass motion of excitons and
biexcitons is confined. Material surroundings and the polarization correlation
of generated photons can be considered. We have analyzed the entangled-photon
generation from CuCl film, by which ultraviolet entangled-photon pairs are
generated, and from dielectric microcavity embedding a CuCl layer. We have
revealed that in the nano-to-bulk crossover regime we generally get a high
performance from the viewpoint of statistical accuracy, and the generation
efficiency can be enhanced by the optical cavity with maintaining the high
performance. The nano-to-bulk crossover regime has a variety of degrees of
freedom to tune the entangled-photon generation, and the scattering spectra
explicitly reflect quantized exciton-photon coupled modes in the finite
structure.Comment: 18 pages, 10 figure
Magneto-optical Trapping of Cadmium
We report the laser-cooling and confinement of Cd atoms in a magneto-optical
trap, and characterize the loading process from the background Cd vapor. The
trapping laser drives the 1S0-1P1 transition at 229 nm in this two-electron
atom and also photoionizes atoms directly from the 1P1 state. This
photoionization overwhelms the other loss mechanisms and allows a direct
measurement of the photoionization cross section, which we measure to be
2(1)x10^(-16)cm^(2) from the 1P1 state. When combined with nearby laser-cooled
and trapped Cd^(+) ions, this apparatus could facilitate studies in ultracold
interactions between atoms and ions.Comment: 8 pages, 11 figure
Precise nondivergent analytic formulas for the radiative corrections to the beta energy spectrum in hyperon semileptonic decays over the entire Dalitz plot
Very accurate analytical expressions for the radiative corrections of
unpolarized hyperons semileptonic decays of charged and neutral baryons have
been obtained in the recent past. Some of these formulas contain logarithmic
singularities at the edges of the Dalitz plot for the three- and four-body
decays. These singularities are analyzed and integrated analytically to obtain
new divergentless formulas for the energy spectrum of the produced beta
particle. The new equations contain terms of the order alpha times the momentum
transfer, are applicable to any beta decay process and are suitable for a
model-independent experimental analysis.Comment: 22 pages, 4 figure

Charging management protocol for near field communication charging
The current multiplicity of mobile communication devices has provided an impetus for the research into new mechanisms to supplement battery charge. Wireless charging is a solution that serves to eliminate the cable requirements of typical battery charging implementations. Numerous wireless charging implementations are based on inductive coupling, similar to existing non-radiative short range communication systems. This study proposes incorporating a charge management protocol into the existing Near Field Communication Interface and Protocol-1 (NFCIP-1) specification to achieve NFC-enabled wireless charging. To this end, the original NFCIP-1 protocol has been modified through a time-sharing arrangement to support a charging task within the protocol cycle. Simulations of the modified protocol cycle were implemented using an appropriate battery model and charging algorithm. Numerical results show that the modified protocol is able to charge the target battery with minimum communication overhead. Satisfactory performance is also observed for charging up to 2 target devices in a single session
Mechanical signatures of microbial biofilms in micropillar-embedded growth chambers
Biofilms are surface-attached communities of microorganisms embedded in an extracellular matrix and are essential for the cycling of organic matter in natural and engineered environments. They are also the leading cause of many infections, for example, those associated with chronic wounds and implanted medical devices. The extracellular matrix is a key biofilm component that determines its architecture and defines its physical properties. Herein, we used growth chambers embedded with micropillars to study the net mechanical forces (differential pressure) exerted during biofilm formation in situ. Pressure from the biofilm is transferred to the micropillars via the extracellular matrix, and reduction of major matrix components decreases the magnitude of micropillar deflections. The spatial arrangement of micropillar deflections caused by pressure differences in the different biofilm strains may potentially be used as mechanical signatures for biofilm characterization. Hence, we submit that micropillar-embedded growth chambers provide insights into the mechanical properties and dynamics of the biofilm and its matrix.Singapore. Properties of Regge Trajectories
Early Chew-Frautschi plots show that meson and baryon Regge trajectoies are
approximately linear and non-intersecting. In this paper, we reconstruct all
Regge trajectories from the most recent data. Our plots show that meson
trajectories are non-linear and intersecting. We also show that all current
meson Regge trajectories models are ruled out by data.Comment: 30 pages, latex, 18 figures, to be published in Physical Review
Surface Aided Polarization Reversal In Small Ferroelectric Particles.
Polarization reversal in ferroelectric particles driven by a pulsed electric field is examined theoretically using Landau-Devonshire-Khalatnikov theory. A significant reduction in reversal times is shown to be possible if certain surface properties and size criteria are met. The surface properties are also shown to control the magnitude of the applied field needed for irreversible switching. An interesting signature of surface effects is found in the switching current. The theory predicts that the switching current for small ferroelectric particles can exhibit double peaks as a function of time. The size and relative times of the peaks provide specific information on the
magnitude and rate of surface reversal dynamics
